04:41 PM Jan. 28, 1997 PT It sounds like a cheesy comic book come-on, but you can actually have your very own sea monkeys whose parents were born in space - thanks to the commercial spin-off of an unusual research experiment undertaken by former residents of Biosphere 2. This week, two miniature ecosystems, designed by Biosphere 2 crew members Jayne Poynter and Taber MacCallum, landed safely on terra firma aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis, after four months on the Russian Space Station Mir.

Steve MacLean Canadians in Space
In April of 2003, Canadian Astronaut Steve MacLean is scheduled to blast off into space, walk in zero gravity and operate Canada's own Canadarm 2. Although it will be a decade since MacLean last went into space aboard the space shuttle Columbia , Canadian space pioneer Marc Garneau had to wait 12 years to do it a second time. Canada's role on the international space program has been increasing since Garneau became the first Canadian in space on the space shuttle Challenger in 1984. Garneau, who was named president of the Canadian Space Agency in November of 2001, returned to orbit in 1996 and 2000 on The Endeavour , logging a total of 677 hours in space.

Free Web Space Awaits Schools
05:07 AM Oct. 02, 1997 PT As of this week, 106,000 schools and 16,409 school districts across the US have cookie-cutter homepages waiting for them - all they have to do is get motivated to fill in the blanks in the templates. Combining lofty goals of educational equality with community action, the Family Education Network and the American School Directory are offering free Web sites to every school in the nation and getting big business to foot the bill. "It's in the hands of the parents and schools," says Family Education Network president Jon Carson. "We're trying to start a movement getting parents and communities involved in the education of kids."

Today's Top 5 Stories
Family Education Network, the producers of an eight-year-old education newsletter, began its project of providing a Web site for every school district earlier this year, when it wired up all of Maryland and then New Jersey. With the hefty educational endorsements of the FCC, the National PTA, the American Association for School Administrators, and the National School Board, the network officially launched across the rest of the US on Monday. For each school district, the Family Education Network provides a meta-site with feature articles on educational and family topics, access to localized news and weather, and state resources. Parents and administrators then take on the responsibility for downloading the site update software, registering the district and its schools as members, and using the provided templates to upload individual school information such as calendars, curriculum, PTA meeting minutes, and news. Community tools allow parents and teachers to join in discussion boards within their school district or across the country, get tips from experts in family, education and health matters, and exchange educational advice in the "Best Practices" area.

Weather Data Lost in Space

11:04 AM May. 20, 1998 PT The failure of critical systems aboard the Galaxy IV satellite yesterday afternoon affected more than just TV news and pagers it also came as a wakeup call to companies that distribute critical Doppler weather radar information to airports, airlines, the Federal Aviation Administration, and emergency management organizations. The satellite, which began spinning out of control at about 6 pm EDT yesterday, carries critical weather information to numerous industries and agencies including the Internet all of which are scrambling to implement backup plans. Engineers are uncertain when service will be restored.

"Radar deployment for aircraft, agriculture, commodities trading, farmers, emergency managers all of that has been wiped out for most of the country," said Dan Arthur, paradigm engineer for Freese-Notis Weather , a company that distributes weather radar information to Web sites and to companies in Japan and Europe. Arthur has since moved his systems to a backup land line, but he says many others are affected.

Dazzling Lava Flow on Jupiter's moon Io
December 17, 1999: During a recent close flyby of Jupiter's moon Io, NASA's Galileo spacecraft observed a fiery lava fountain shooting more than a mile above the moon's surface. The images, showing a curtain of lava erupting within a giant volcanic crater, will be unveiled today during the American Geophysical Union's fall meeting in San Francisco. Galileo took the pictures on Thanksgiving night, November 25. "We've finally caught a close-up of a massive volcanic eruption in action on Io," said Galileo project scientist Dr. Torrence Johnson of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, CA. "The erupting lava was so hot and bright, it over-exposed part of the camera picture and left a bright blur in the middle." These lava fountains were hot enough and tall enough to be observed by the NASA Infrared Telescope atop Mauna Kea, HI. By combining data from this telescope and Galileo observations, scientists have their best chance ever to pin down temperatures of the extremely hot lava on Io. The images show a region of giant calderas, or crater depressions, in Io's northern latitudes. They came from two of Galileo's onboard instruments the camera and near-infrared mapping spectrometer, which observes wavelengths invisible to the unaided eye.
