The history of Spain comes from Greeks, Romans and Carthaginians, from Huns, Visigoths and Moors, to Jews, Jesuits and Gypsies - cultures and ideas have clashed repeatedly.
The first settlements were built in 1,100 BC. The Greeks and Romans conquered the area. In the 3rd century Christianity was spread. In 395 the Vandals, 410 the Goths and 711 the Arabians conquered the people.
The Kingdom started in 1479 when Ferdinand of Aragonia and Isabel of
Kastilia got married. In 1492 the Arabian fights ended. In the same year Christopher
Columbus discovered America. Charles the V conquered areas in Africa, America and in the
Mediterranean. He fought with France throughout is life. His son, Philip the II defeated the Turks near Lepanto, but England defeated him. In 1700 the House of Anjou had the kingdom and started the fight for the throne. In 1808 Spain was defeated by France and Joseph Bonaparte became king.
In 1898 fights began between America and Spain. After that Cuba, the Philippines and Puerto Rico became independent. In 1931 Spain became a republic. It was followed by a lot of hostility. In 1936-38 there was a Civil War. In 1975 John Charles I became king. Today Spain is a rich ,famous and strong state. A lot of tourists visit it every year and never forget the beautiful towns and the friendly people.

http://www.unlimitedspain.com/history.html
The Iberian Peninsula has been occupied for many millennia. The result is a country with over 20,000 years of history from a multitude of civilizations and people. Countless events that took place or that were initiated in Spain have helped shape modern civilization as we know it today. From the early Paleolithic developments to modern-day international relations, Spain presents a fascinating history for anyone interested in learning about one of the oldest countries in the Western World. Nowadays, researchers believe that the Basques are the first identifiable people of the peninsula and probably the oldest surviving group in Europe. After their arrival, the Iberians and Celts soon followed, all forming the early ethnic groups of "Celtiberia" During the 16th century, Spain became the most powerful nation in the world due to the immense wealth derived from its presence in the American Continent. However, a series of costly wars and confrontations with neighbor European countries ended with the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588, which turned out to be the beginning of a steady decline of Spanish power in Europe and the New World. Additional internal controversies and disruptions in the late 18th century led to an occupation by France in the early 1800s, during Napoleon's reign. The 19th century saw the revolt and independence of most of Spain's colonies in the Western Hemisphere and internal confrontations over the succession issue. There was a brief ousting of the monarchy in favor of the First Republic (1873-74), and finally, at the turn of the century, the Spanish-American war (1898), in which Spain lost its remaining three colonies: Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippines. This event is considered as the beginning of Spain's decadence in the early 1900s. A dictatorship, and Second Republic followed, which resulted in increasing political polarization. Pressures from all sides finally led to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).

I have written a series of articles highlighting the early aspects of Spain's history for the local newsletter. Because I know that I am not the only fan of Medieval Spain, I included the articles on my web page. This section is constantly being revised and updated. Historical Highlights, First Series : From the Beginnings of Spanish Civilization to the Beginnings of the Reconquest Historical Highlights, Second Series : The Provinces of Spain Historical Highlights, Miscellaneous Articles : A collection of articles that do not fit easily into another category. General Spanish Links American Academy of Research Historians of Spain : This is not a site that I have had a lot of time to explore. I think it looks neat and has potential so I included it. El Camino de Santiago : Includes cool information about the pilgrimage, including a map of the journey and a virtual tour of the cathedral.

St Martin's Because of its central position on the Iberian peninsula between Europe and Africa, Spain was invaded frequently. Roman rule was established in the third century BC and was followed by Muslim and Arab invasions. Spain had no choice but to follow the dominant religion and principles of their conquerors. Definite influences in culture and language have remained from the days of these early settlers and are still evident in modern Spain. After a bloody war between the Nationalists and the Republicans, which ended in 1939, General Franco began his tyrannical fascist rule. This 36 year period crippled Spain economically and cut it off from the rest of the world. However, when Franco died in 1975, the monarchy was restored and King Juan Carlos took the throne. To this day, Spain continues to have a monarchy, but all decisions affecting the country are taken by Parliament. The royal family are very popular with the Spanish public and they support many humanitarian and moral issues. Central Parliament is called Las Cortes and is elected to power every four years by all citizens able to vote (those aged over 18). There are 554 members of Parliament.

    A Brief History of Spain
From Atapuerca to King Juan Carlos in 500 words. Text by Mark Little. Most of the Iberian peninsula has been populated since prehistoric times. Early evidence of human habitation unearthed at the Atapuerca site in northern Spain are some 800,000 years old. Modern man made his appearance around 35,000 BC. Sometime around 4000 BC, much of Spain was settled by the Iberians, arriving from the east. The Celts arrived later, settling in the northern third of the peninsula. Bronze age civilization flourished in the south, culminating with the Tartessian civilization around Seville (1000-500 BC). Around 1100 BC, Phoenician seafarers from present-day Lebanon set up trading colonies in Cadiz and elsewhere along the Spanish coast. Phocaean Greeks also traded along the north-eastern coast. With the fall of Phoenicia, the Iberian peninsula came under the rule of Carthage (present day Tunisia), but was occupied by Rome following the Punic Wars. The Romans held sway in Iberia for six centuries, laying the foundations for Spanish language and culture. Following the fall of the western Roman empire in the fifth century AD, Spain was ruled by the Visigoths, a Germanic people who had migrated from central Europe. In 711, the Muslims of northern Africa launched an invasion across the Strait of Gibraltar, occupying most of the peninsula within a few years. Their presence lasted more than seven centuries, though the Christian kingdoms to the north increased in power over the generations, gradually driving the Moors southwards. The last Moorish kingdom, Granada (the eastern half of present-day Andalusia), was conquered in 1492.
