Return to Special Education home page Special Education-Instructional Support Services Serving Students With Special Needs In Mounds View Schools Program and Building Information Early Childhood Special Education: Birth to three: Children in this age group are seen in the most natural environment possible which is usually in their homes. Families are involved in planning for their child's needs and are taught how they can participate in meeting those needs. Staff includes Special Education Teachers, Psychologists, Speech and Language Clinicians, Occupational Therapists and Physical Therapists as needed. Three to Five: Services for children in this age group are generally delivered within Early Childhood Family Education, or other pre-school settings. Children may also receive services in groups of all special education students for part of that time. Once again, parents are actively involved in planning for their child's needs. Staff includes the same professionals as listed above. Mounds View and Roseville collaborate on services for children with severe autism. Children are currently participating at: Mounds View Community Center, New Brighton Family Service Center, Ralph Reeder Community Center, Lexington Center, and various area pre-schools.

Having a child with special needs is a very difficult turn of life. There are so many things that we take for granted before we find ourselves as the parents of one of God's special angels. Fortunately, there are many great resources available on the internet. I have a few listed, and there are many more that can be accessed through the sites themselves. My own special child was my third, Elissa . She was born with a congenital syndrome called velo-cardio-facial syndrome, or VCFS. She underwent open-heart surgery at 17 days of age. She has had a number of medical problems, but overall she is thriving. Chiropractic care as well as breastfeeding have had a huge impact on her health. We are blessed by her presence each and every day. I have information on special-needs homeschooling on my homeschooling page . Please check it out if you are considering homeschooling. Many of the special kids do better with the one-on-one instruction that is only available in the home setting. They can go at their individual pace without the distraction of the other children or a teacher who needs to attend to several other special-needs kids at the same time. It also allows the parents to be more actively involved with their progress and protects medically fragile children from avoidable illness. It is something to consider, especially as many services may be able to be obtained through a homebound designation. *Please keep in mind while looking through these links that I have included them for some of their content.
