But our New Hampshire Chronicle historian, Fritz Wetherbee, certainly has taken notice. Tonight, Fritz has the story of a special building in Effingham seeped in history and beauty. Next, the war in Afghanistan is more than a distant struggle for a Green Beret from Laconia who was hurt by friendly fire. And while U.S. Olympic athletes set a record for the number of medals they won at the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City, there are many athletes right here in New Hampshire who are bringing home gold, silver and bronze from the Special Olympics in Waterville Valley.

The Lions Club of Washington D.C (Special Olympics) includes Special Olympics athletes, who have mental disabilities. The four Special Olympics athletes who currently belong to the club work for Special Olympics. Like other Lions, members of the new club will volunteer for local charitable activities. Possible activities include supporting Special Olympics programs, Camp Merrick (a camp for children with cancer), Habitat for Humanity and local shelters and kitchens. The mission of the new club is "to strive, through service and outreach, to unify and strengthen our community to create a more inclusive world." David Evangelista of Special Olympics, club president, said, "Given our infancy, we still have a lot to learn. District Governor Barbara Stevens and the surrounding clubs have been very supportive. There is so much potential with the talents and energies that this club possesses. We expect great things." The new club currently has 25 members. Its Guiding Lion is Bob Bosley, past president of the Rockville Lions in Maryland.

Training for Life
The training that is such an integral part of the Special Olympics program is truly "Training for Life." Through training, Special Olympics athletes not only acquire specific sports skills to prepare for competition, they also gain an opportunity for even greater participation in family, school and community life. Societal acceptance and inclusion of people with mental disabilities ultimately benefits all concerned. Lifting Spirits through Sports: Special Olympics programs are patterned after the Olympic Games. In fact, Special Olympics is the only organization authorized by the International Olympic Committee to use the word "Olympics" in its name. Like the mainstream Olympics, Special Olympics International has a truly global presence, with programs in every state and in 150 countries. It includes nearly one million athletes and 500,000 volunteers who take part in over 15,000 Special Olympics games around the world, involving 23 summer and winter sports.

A Brief History of Special Olympics In the CNMI The first and last Special Olympics for the CNMI occurred in the Spring of 1992. Organized by a group of volunteers from the Public School System including Mr. Tom Pangelinan, Zenaida Cristobal, and scores of others. The volunteers sought the cooperation of public agencies and private entities for
logistic, volunteer and financial support and hosted an extremely successful single day event. Events included wheelchair races, baseball throws, numerous track and field events. Participants came from Saipan, Rota and Tinian, and numbered over 200. More than 1,000 people were on hand to cheer and witness the competitors. This year we expect an even larger number of participants and spectators and have included water sports in addition to the events of 1992's spectacular. Ed Lieberman Back
