Special Olympics Virginia History
Over 30 years ago, SOVA was incorporated as a non-profit, 501 (c)(3) organization. Our mission is to provide year round sports training and Olympic-type competition for citizens with mental retardation in Virginia. Currently, more than 13,000 athletes participate in training and compete in a year-round program of 22 different sports.
Athletes in Virginia train and compete in aquatics, track and field, gymnastics, soccer, basketball, tennis, golf, powerlifting, and other sports at the local, regional, state and international levels. While our competition events are often in public view, it is our training program that forms the foundation of all that we do. Through the strong network of 20,000 volunteers, Special Olympics athletes spend countless hours preparing for the opportunity to compete for the gold, silver or bronze medals. In a sense our athletes are training for life itself. Training becomes an important stepping stone into communities throughout Virginia for our athletes and their families.
Special Olympics is more than medals … more than winning ... it is acquiring skills, experiencing joy and demonstrating courage. It is a time to be connected or belong to a group of friends and family that are determined to succeed in "our" world. It is a year-round sports training program driven by volunteer coaches who often become close friends of the Special Olympians and his or her family. It's about gaining self respect and dignity through sports training and competition for citizens traditionally bypassed by society.

History of the Polar Plunge
The origin of the Polar Plunge to Benefit Special Olympics Virginia
goes back to 1993. Adventure Club East was busy trying to find something fun and crazy to do in the middle of the winter. Coincidentally, Special Olympics Virginia was looking for new fund raising avenues and the two pieces just came together. That first plunge, held at the Clarion hotel, featured all of about 34 plungers and still raised almost $8,000.
Since then, Polar Plunge has raised over $100 million dollars for Special Olympics Virginia and over 7,000 chilled souls have taken the plunge. Because of this generous support, Special Olympics Virginia is able to reach out and provide year round training and sports programs for both children and adults with mental retardation throughout the state of Virginia.
The new millennium sees the plunge growing bigger than ever with the expansion of the plunge into the Polar Plunge Winter Festival. More groups are already committed to this year's plunge than previous years making this year's event the "in thing" to be doing in February. With the food and music festival being introduced, that original fun and crazy idea has expanded to include partying on the beach in February. Why the heck not, what else are you doing?
If you want to see some of the zanies running loose in Virginia Beach, we've assembled a small collection of video excepts and photo's for you to see just what Polar Plunge is all about. Go ahead and

"Training is the cornerstone of Special Olympics, it is apart of the mission and the basis for everything we do.we have all seen the positive results of training our athletes. Individuals with little or no physical fitness skills priorto Special Olympics training have become accomplished athletes - excelling in sports which have been considered impossible for individuals with mental retardation to learn. Solid, consistent training works, we are committed to providing workshops and programs which will help improve the skills and accomplishments of both Special Olympics participants and volunteers." Davidson/Sumner County Special Olympics in Tennessee and Nashville began in 1968 when N.C. Hibbitt at Clover Bottom Development Center inquired about Special Olympics and was invited to attend the first games in 1968 in Chicago. He and four athletes accepted the invitation and carried athletes to be a part of this first ever Special Olympics. N.C Hibbitt became the volunteer state director. Several events involving residents from other state institutions were held under his direction over the next four years. In 1972 the first local track and field meet was held inviting participants from the middle Tennessee area. Mary Wherry of the Metro Parks and Recreation Department organized this event along with a host of volunteers from Metro Parks.

Special Olympics Web links What are the Special Olympics? Special Olympics competitions, including the 1999 Special Olympics World Summer Games, are patterned after the Olympic Games. Athletes around the world train for and compete in more than 15,000 games, meets, and tournaments in summer and winter sports each year. Selected athletes from nearly 150 countries then go on to compete in World Games every two years, alternating between summer and winter Games. By assigning athletes to divisions according to their age and abilities, Special Olympics gives every athlete a reasonable chance to win. Athletes from all divisions may advance to Chapter, National, and World Games. There’s a chance for people without mental retardation to get into the Games. A program called Unified Sports® brings persons without mental retardation and of comparable age and athletic ability, together on the same team with persons with mental retardation. Unified Sports® was started in 1987, and it helps to integrate athletes with mental retardation into school and community sports programs. Unified teams from round the globe will compete in the 1999 Special Olympics World Summer Games. During the ’99 Games, competition in 19 sports will be held at venues throughout the Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill area of North Carolina.

What is Special Olympics?
I have been doing some surfing lately and I have noticed a few errors people make about Special Olympics.
  • Most people misunderstand who is eligible for Special Olympics. In order to be a Special Olympics athlete, you must be mentally handicapped.
    • Having only an emotional handicap (BD, ED, et al) does not make you eligible.
    • Having only a learning disability does not make you eligible. Albert Einstein, even though he was dyslexic, could not have competed.
    • Having only a physical disability does not make you eligible. You will not see Jean Driscoll compete in a traditional Special Olympics competition.
