We are conducting research in analytical chemistry using isotope metrology and mass spectrometric instrumentation. Available instruments include inductively coupled plasma and thermal ionization mass spectrometers. Studies are also possible in elemental, isotopic, and speciation measurement. Stable and radioisotopes can be applied to study environmental and health problems, materials, and processes, using isotope dilution techniques. Research can be directed to innovative development of instrumentation and methods; the characterization and interpretation of unique samples; or the determination of natural, absolute isotopic abundances. April 2000
RAE 2001
As promised in the February edition of PERC Matters the following are further extracts from the http://www.rae.ac.uk/Pubs/5_99/default.htm website regarding the combined definitive guidelines for UoA 21 (Environmental Sciences) and UoA 20 (Earth Sciences).
Textual Commentary RA5
Research Structure and Environment The Panel will look for evidence of research vitality and a research culture when considering forms RA5 and RA6. Institutions are encouraged to draw the Panel's attention to the full range of research activities covered by groups of staff, as evidence of a well planned and focussed research programme. However, there is no penalty for identifying researchers who work alone or in effective collaboration with colleagues in other institutions in the UK or overseas. There will be no advantage in artificially grouping staff in delineated research areas if there is little or no evidence of a common intellectual basis in that group. Size of submission is not an issue of relevance to the Panel. There is no reason, in principle, why a submission from a small group, or comprising small groups, cannot obtain a high rating. Departments should provide clear evidence of the status of and contribution to the research programme made by Category C staff.

PERC MATTERS
March 2001
European Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry
Professor Steve Hill gave five presentations on work from his group covering topics such as uranium and antimony speciation, multielement speciation of cationic soluble species in tea, the application of chemometric methods to characterise long term stability in ICP-AES, and the influence of matrix effects on stability in ICP studies. Dr Hywel Evans presented work on variable reduction procedures for ICP-AES spectra and their application to multivariate calibration, whilst workers from Les Ebdon's group reported on novel approaches for sample introduction in DIN-ICP-MS and lead speciation in rainwater samples. This international meeting, considered by many to be the premier meeting for atomic spectroscopy, attracted over 350 delegates from all over the world.
British Geological Survey
Dr Jim Griffiths has been awarded £18,000 by the British Geological Survey for investigations into the distribution, nature and causes of landsliding in Southwest England. In the first instance this will go towards supporting a joint PERC/BGS research studentship but the intention is to use this as a basis for further research in this field between Plymouth and the BGS Urban Geohazard group.
