Venomous Spiders Black widows and brown recluse spiders are the only venomous arachnids known in West Virginia. Though none of the species found in West Virginia are prevalent, care should be taken to avoid them when venturing through their preferred haunts. Black Widows Widows build strong, sloppy webs in which the females usually hang upside down. Female widow spiders are bulbous, shiny and 12- to-16 mm long. Males are much smaller with longer legs and are rarely recognized as widows by the lay person. Males are not considered a threat to humans, though they possess venom and can bite. Juvenile widows are usually light colored, and darken to their adult coloration with each successive molt.

Among its many members are the spiders, mites, ticks, scorpions, harvestmen, pseudoscorpions, horseshoe crabs, and other less well known groups. The Chelicerata are one of the four great living subdivisions of the Arthopods. The fifth major subdivision of the Chelicerata, the Trilobites, went extinct in the Permian at the end of the Paleozoic. These four subdivisions are: Crustacea, Chelicerata, Insecta, and Myriapoda. The Chelicerata, in turn, have three major subdivisions: the Pycnogonida (Sea Spiders), Xiphosura (Horseshoe Crabs), and the largest group the Arachnida (spiders, mites, ticks, scorpions, etc.). Class Arachnida

The Department of Invertebrates is responsible for research and curation of all invertebrate collections at the museum. The Department consists of Arachnida, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera, Odonata and Orthoptera collections. Class Arachnida The Spider and Scorpion collections are amongst the most important in South Africa, while the Solifuge collection is probably the largest. Spiders are widely admired for the way in which they use silken threads to spin webs. The name Arachnidae, the class in the animal kingdom to which all spiders belong is derived from the Greek word arachne , which means "spiders". Classification of spiders according to their habitat are as follow: Ground-living, Burrow-living, Free-living ground spiders, Plant-living, Grass dwellers, Bark dwellers, Seed dwellers, Foliage dwellers, Flower dwellers, Web-living spiders, Tunnel webs, Sheet webs, Cast webs and Swing webs. Worldwide approximately 30 000 spider species have been formally described to date. The Arachnida also includes a diverse array of smaller groups, including scorpions (1200 species), whip scorpions (100 species), palpigrades (60 species), pseudoscorpions (2000 species), solpugids (900 species), and harvestmen (5000 species). Nearly all species are terrestrial. In southern Africa, which has a rich spider fauna, about 5000 different species belonging to 66 different families are found. A thorough knowledge of the taxonomy, biology and ecology of southern African spider fauna by itself is a lifetime work. A review of our spider fauna using the formal taxonomic framework, which reflects evolutionary relationships, will be voluminous.

It includes such animals as spiders, ticks, mites, scorpions, harvestmen, andmany other smaller orders. A few spiders are large enough to ambush birds.
http://www.biology.missouri.edu/courses/Bio10/arachnida.html
Class Arachnida The Class Arachnida consists of over 70,000 species within the Phylum Arthropoda. It includes such animals as spiders, ticks, mites, scorpions, harvestmen, and many other smaller orders. Characteristics common to all arachnids are a lack of antennae, eight legs, respiration using trachea or book lungs, feeding on liquids or external digestion by secreting salivary enzymes to make food liquid, and a terrestrial lifestyle. Phylum Arthropoda Class Arachnida Order Araneae The Order Araneae, which consists of the true spiders, includes about 37,000 species. The largest spiders can grow to have a leg span of up to ten inches. They have eight eyes and a body that is separated into two segments: the cephalothorax and abdomen. Spiders can produce silk using their spinnerets, a modification within the abdomen, although not all spiders produce silk for building webs used for capturing prey. Those that don't spin webs use their silk to build nests or burrows, protect their eggs, or transfer sperm. These spiders use an ambush technique for capturing prey. They hide among plants until they see an insect prey to pounce on. A few spiders are large enough to ambush birds. All spiders are carnivorous and most have venom to paralyze their prey.

General Description and Habits
Spiders can be distinguished easily from insects. All spiders have two major body regions and four pair of legs; insects have three body regions and three pair of legs. Spiders vary widely in color, shape, size, and habits. All produce venom that is poisonous to their normal prey. Few spiders are considered dangerous to humans, however. These animals are predaceous by nature and use their venom, which is injected through hollow fangs or chelicerae, to immobilize their prey. Spiders normally feed on insects and other small arthropods, but some large tropical species capture small mice, rats, birds, or fish. Spiders can only ingest liquids. Digestive fluids are either injected into the prey or regurgitated on to it. The spider then imbibes the liquified material. Spiders are generally considered beneficial because they consume large numbers of insects and are of almost no importance as disease carriers. Unfortunately, they do not differentiate between beneficial and destructive insects in their diet.
