Kelvin Sampson and SI gave the Sooners a big thumbs up. Oklahoma Ranked Among Nation's Best Sports Colleges Sports Illustrated releases its rankings Oct. 4, 2002 Norman, Okla. -
Oklahoma is ranked No. 3 among America's Best Sports Colleges in a piece that appears in this week's issue of Sports Illustrated. During the 2001-02 school year, Oklahoma won the Cotton Bowl championship, sent both the men's and women's basketball teams to the Final Four and saw its men's gymnstics program capture a national championship. Sports Illustrated said, "(The) Sooners made men's and women's Final Fours and just missed BCS berth (football team finished No. 6). Gymnastics won NCAA title, wrestling was No. 3 and softball No. 8. School is on the rise, with rec facilities being upgraded (OU already has a top 10 golf course) and hot coaches in Bob Stoops (football) and Kelvin Sampson (basketball)." OU Athletics Director Joe Castiglione was pleased with the recognition. "After the terrific year we just celebrated, this is well-deserved recognition for an outstanding group of student-athletes, coaches and staff," he said. "Moreover, it proves once again, if the mission is correct, people get involved and stay committted to working together, like we are at Oklahoma, great things can and usually do happen.
