Check It Out!
Here is part 3 of a 3-part chapter excerpt from the book Beginning SQL Programming by John Kauffman, Brian Matsik, Kevin Spencer, and Tom Walsh; ISBN 1861001800; published March 2001, 723 pages. Using LIKE So far we have learned how to find exact matches with SQL. However, there are likely to be many times that we may need to search for partial strings. Maybe we want to find everyone that has a first name starting with C or a book with "computer" in the title. SQL provides a LIKE operator for just this type of query. The LIKE operator can only be used on fields that have one of the string types set as their data type. LIKE cannot be used on dates or numbers. LIKE is used when searching for inexact string matches in a table. It is used within the WHERE clause, and uses the following format:

Who Benefits of attending Seminar outline Advanced SQL Programming Techniques
Part I: Using Encoded Characteristic Functions
TM to Optimize SQL Part II: Tree and Graph Processing in SQL About This Seminar Part I of this seminar introduces encoded characteristic functions (ECF), a new, innovative SQL programming methodology developed by David Rozenshtein, Ph.D., Anatoly Abramovich, Ph.D., and Eugene Birger, Ph.D. ECF allow programmers to encode conditional logic as scalar expressions within SELECT, WHERE, GROUP BY, HAVING, ORDER BY and SET clauses. These extremely powerful techniques enable a programmer to:
  • Code single statement solutions to problems that normally require multiple SQL statements.
  • Minimize the number of passes through underlying tables.
  • Use SQL to obtain results not otherwise available within a relational implementation.
SQL code that uses ECF is often an order of magnitude faster than a conventional SQL solution. The SQL programming methodology described in this seminar incorporates features of SQL-92 and easily adapts to any SQL-based system. Attendees study extensive examples of SQL code. They learn how to reformulate queries and optimize SQL by minimizing the required number of data passes. They learn to write highly optimized queries that express conditions as scalar expressions - removing these conditions from the WHERE clause and using them in SELECT, GROUP BY, HAVING, ORDER BY, and SET clauses.

November 11, 1999
O'Reilly Releases Oracle PL/SQL Programming Guide to Oracle8i Features and Oracle SAP Administration
SEBASTOPOL, CASteven Feuerstein, author of the well-received Oracle PL/SQL series, has done it again. He has written a book designed to bring developers up to speed as quickly as possible on the new PL/SQL features of Oracle8 i Following the style of Feuerstein's earlier books, Oracle PL/SQL Programming Guide to Oracle8i Features combines easy-to-understand descriptions of the new Oracle8 i features with a wealth of interesting and informative examples. It covers autonomous transactions, invoker rights, native dynamic SQL, bulk binds and collects, system-level database triggers, new built-in packages, fine-grained access control, calling Java methods from within PL/SQL, and much more. PL/SQL developers will be able to take advantage of all the power of Java without giving up the performance and usability perks of PL/SQL. Oracle PL/SQL Programming Guide to Oracle8i offers enough Java know-how to build simple Java classes, load them into the Oracle8 i database, and leverage those classes from within the PL/SQL code.

SQL Programming Interfaces
When developing a new SQL application, the developer/architect must select a programming interface that fits the requirements of the application. There is a rainbow of requirements to base this decision on:
Need It Yesterday
Is the goal to rapidly develop a data-driven GUI application? Then you probably shouldn't even be looking here, and instead look at RAD Tools
Multiple Database Support
Does it have to access more than one, or even dozens of different brands of databases?
Multiple Operating System Support
Does it need to run on Gnu/Linux only, or other operating systems?
Longevity
Will this application need to be around a decade from now? If so, it might be dangerous to base it on a commercial product, as the company that provides it may go out of business.
Language Interfaces
Is it more important to have the interfaces be in some specific programming language, or are you willing to code in C/C++? Note that most programming languages/environments, such as Perl, Python, PHP and Scheme, provide 'thin' wrappers/interfaces to an assortment of underlying C language interfaces. Some are listed below, but you should also check language-specific sites for more options.
Proprietary
Will the application be proprietary? If so, then you don't want to write code that links to GNU GPL licensed libraries. You want the GNU LGPL instead, or one of the other proprietary-code friendly licenses.
