General Information on Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) is a small island in the indian ocean of 65,000 square kilometers. Despite the smallness Sri Lanka has a wide range of geographic features and is rich in natural beauty.
Large parts of Sri Lanka is covered with tropical forests, with hundreds of of rivers flowing through them, often cascading in awsome waterfalls. The southern and western regions of Sri Lanka have only two seasons, wet and wetter, but few parts of the country can almost be mistaken for deserts. The other regions experience a rainy season and dry season. These areas look realy wonderful just as the rains start to ease. I can go on and on about Sri Lanka, and in the travel page , I have!

Behind the southernmost point of the island - Dondra - you will find nothing but ocean until you arrive at Antarctica. During the 1960s extensive work began on numerous irrigation projects. The accelerated Mahaweli Scheme, one of the major undertakings, includes many dams and provides the population with electricity, a regular water supply, and new land for cultivation.
Sri Lanka is rich in industrial rocks and minerals such as graphite, mica, silica sand, quartz, feldspar, and gemstones. The nation is the world's largest producer of graphite, a form of carbon that is used in the making of lead pencils. Long known as a land of gems, the island has 44 varieties of precious and semiprecious gemstones. Mined around Ratnapura, the gems include sapphires, rubies, aquamarines, moonstones, topazes, garnets, amethysts, and zircons.
Climate
Unstable weather conditions throughout Sri Lanka's history have produced severe droughts, particularly in the northern part of the country. In ancient times reservoirs were built to hold rainfall for irrigation. The oldest of these, believed to have been built in about 300 BC and discovered abandoned and overgrown with dense scrub, has been restored for use. In the mountains however, in the neighborhood of Nuwara Eliya, it is relatively cold and there's much more rainfall. Usually the weather is agreable along the coast, but in the lower parts of the tableland it can be hot and humid.

THE GEOGRAPHY OF SRI LANKA.
Sri Lanka is a tropical island of 65,610 sq.kms, situated in the Indian Ocean, at the southern tip of the Indian sub-continent. Formerly known as Ceylon, The country re-adopted it's name of Sri Lanka with the change to Republican status in 1972. The island occupies a strategic location on the traditional trade routes linking East and West. Colombo is the commercial capital and is a important port. The coastal plains rise gradually to a Mountainous region at the center of the island. The rivers originate from the central hill massif and radiate outwards to the Indian Ocean. Dry tropical forests cover most of the island with wet tropical forests in the south and west, and temperate forests in the central hills. Minerals mined in Sri Lanka include Graphity, Mica, Silica, Sands, Dolomites, Ilmenite and iron pyrites. GEOGRAPHY Time Difference Standard time in Sri Lanka is 6 hours ahead of GMT; Eastern Standard Time in Australia is 4hours ahead. Climate The lowlands are always hot, particularly from March to May. The highlands are cooler. Seasonal During December and January there is occasional frost on very high ground such as Nuwara Eliya. The dry season is March to mid-May. The south-west monsoon season lasts from mid-May to September, the north-east monsoon season from November to March. Cities The Commercial Capital is Colombo and the State Capital is Sri Jayawardenapura, Kotte; Other large cities are Jaffna, Kandy, Galle Dehiwala-Mt Lavinia, Moratuwa, Anuradhapura and Matara Ports Colombo, Trincomalee, and Galle International Airport Katunayake (20 miles from Colombo) Terrain Beyond the coastal plains, Sri Lanka's topography is dominated by an outstandingly beautiful central mountain massif of gneiss rock, with the highest point at Pidurutalagala (2,524m). The holy Adam's Peak (2,243m) is so called from a mark at the top in the likeness of a human footprint, variously attributed as the print of the Buddha, Vishnu or Adam, and is a place of pilgrimage. The coastal plains are broader in the north, tapering off in the long low-lying Jaffna peninsula. Several fast-flowing non-navigable rivers arise in the mountains. The Mahaweli Ganga, from which hydroelectric power is obtained, is the longest at 322km. Rainfall Average annual rainfall varies from about 37" to 228". South West quarter and Central Region (approx. 1/3 of the Island) receives more than 79" with a high between 158" to 228" being restricted to Western slopes of the Central Hills and North Eastern Hill Country. A little less than 2/3rd of Sri Lanka receives less than 79". The lowest average rainfall of less than 40" is confined to the extreme North Western and South East Region of Sri Lanka.

Research within Human Geography has traditionally been centred around physical and regional planning in Sweden, but there is also a long tradition of studies within development geography, particularly in Africa.

Regional Development in an Open Economy. A Comparative Study of Hambantota and Gampaha Districts, Sri Lanka Contact Person in Sweden: Ass. Professor
Contact Persons in Sri Lanka: Professor Kamal Karunanayake
and Professor Nimal Dangalle , University of Kelaniya Description of the Project The regional development pattern is initially illustrated quantitatively with GIS. This involves a comparison at the national level, between different districts, a specific comparison between the districts of Hambantota and Gampaha, as well as internal variations within these districts. From a quantitative picture, the researchers probe further into what is actually influencing the regional development pattern with a more qualitative approach, where they also go deeper into the regions to discuss current trends with planners and other professionals at the central and district levels, as well as finding out perceptions of development at the local level, through in-depth interviews.
