Environment Fauna S t Helena's climate is typically subtropical influenced by the South East Trade Wind Belt. Temperatures and mean annual rainfall vary with altitude ranging from a mean of 23 o C, 325 mm in the capital Jamestown on the coast to 16 o C, 925 mm at about 600 metres above sea level View of Sugar Loaf The deeply eroded summit of a composite volcano, St Helena's dramatic topography is the result of 7.5 million years of erosion. Plugs, domes and dykes from the volcanoes form some of the Island's most dramatic erosional features: Lot, Lot's Wife and the Gates of Chaos. A high central ridge, known as the peaks and referred to as the 'National Park', occupies the major axis of the Island and dominates the topography. The highest point on the ridge is Diana's Peak at 823 metres above sea level. Deep gorge-like valleys radiate from the ridge, incised to depths of up to 300 metres and providing a spectacular landscape in the interior and a series of alternating bays and high cliffs forming the coastline. The fauna on the Island comprises largely introduced species, cattle, sheep, goats, donkeys, cats, dogs, rabbits, mice, rats and various types of fowl. A famous old inhabitant, a two hundred year old giant tortoise who goes by the name of Jonathan, enjoys life with five other tortoise companions in the grounds of the Governors Residence. There is a rich endemic invertebrate fauna including some unusually large examples of their species.

The ancient Romans used the name Africa terra (land of the Afri (pl.) or Afer (sg.)) for the northern part of the continent, corresponding to modern Tunisia. The origin of Afer may be the Arabic afer, dust; the Afridi tribe, who dwelt in Northern Africa around the area of Carthage; Greek aphrike, without cold, or Latin aprica, sunny. Africa is c. 11,677,240 sq mi (30,244,050 sq km) including adjacent islands; 1990 est. pop. 648,000,000. Broad to the north (c. 4,600 mi/7,400 km wide), Africa straddles the equator and stretches c. 5,000 mi (8,050 km) from Cape Blanc (Tunisia) in the north to Cape Agulhas (South Africa) in the south.
