Christmas Eve is also very important in Sweden. A meal made of pork, herring, lutfish (dried cod), brown beans and rice porridge is eaten. Presents are exchanged at this time as well. People often go to Church early on Christmas morning. Families sometimes have goats made of straw in the house to guard the Christmas Tree ! Straw is used as a decoration in homes, to remind them that Jesus was born in a manger. Christmas Tree decorations that are made of straw are also very popular. Traditional Music and Folklore of St Croix, St Thomas and St John - Various performers New World Records 80427 - 2 The commercial category 'World Music' may not have been intended as a liberal euphemism for 'foreign' music. Inevitably, perhaps, that is what it soon became, as if white English-speaking musicians were somehow not in the world. Fascination with the novel and alien has passed for cultural investigation for as long as some people have sought an alternative to whatever the commercial entertainment industry had to offer. But the point of 'a wider perspective on traditional music' is surely not to wallow in the exotic for its own sake, but to appreciate what popular musics around the world have in common. The latter approach - true eclecticism as opposed to culture collecting - has had some encouragement during the past two decades. This is not due to the self-conscious 'fusions' indulged in by bored musicians, but to the musical miscegenation that arises naturally out of historical reality; or rather, to the long overdue recognition of that process, and of the fact that any music that has ever been popular enough to become traditional is likely to be a product of it. 'Purism' has long been a term of abuse, mainly because it has been taken to denote excess, a purely relative matter of over-enthusiasm. Now it is increasingly acknowledged that concepts like 'pure' and 'authentic' have little useful application. It seems obvious, once uttered, that the notion of a 'true folk artist', reliably representative of his / her community alone, has been a nostalgic one, at least since the spread of the domestic phonograph and wireless.

    History of St. Lucia
    History of St. Lucia
St. Lucia's exquisite beauty and serenity belie a history marred by constant war and bloodshed. Even before the advent of the European conquest of the New World, St. Lucia had already been victimized by the ongoing struggle between bellicose Amerindian tribes for control of the island. The original settlers of the island migrated from the northeastern shores of the South American continent between 1000 and 500 B.C. These people were simple farmers and fishermen. Today, over 12 archaeological sites on the island bear witness to this ancient civilization. Remains of their culture consist primarily of domestic and ceremonial artifacts, ceramic objects and enigmatic cave drawings. By the ninth century A.D., the Carib Indians had begun to advance through the southern Caribbean islands. These fierce warriors also migrated from South America, but their rapid rise to supremacy was achieved in a relatively short time. When the first Europeans arrived, it was the Caribs who greeted them. These encounters were rarely amicable. Just which European discovered St. Lucia is still in question. Christopher Columbus has traditionally been given credit for the discovery, supposedly made during his fourth voyage in 1502, but recently uncovered evidence suggests otherwise.

    Write A New Holiday Article
    Featuring St. Lucia!
by Mitchel Whitington It's December, and time to start working on those Christmas articles for next year, that is! Most periodicals have their Christmas deadlines set several months in advance, and many are making plans for their December issue during the sweltering summer months. With this in mind, Christmas is the perfect time to start writing those queries for next year's holiday articles. One problem that most Yuletide authors have is finding a fresh approach to the holiday. Themes from Christmas trees to Santa Clause have been examined from every conceivable angle. A fresh alternative has been slowly creeping into American culture, though, and to find out more about it only takes a glance across the ocean. In the early morning hours of December 13th, the small, rural house is dark. The parent's bedroom is silent. In the kitchen, though, there is a hushed, excited banter among the children of the house as the pastries are placed carefully on the trays, and the freshly-brewed coffee is poured into cups. The eldest daughter, costumed in a white gown with red sash, lights the ring of candles and carefully lifts it up to rest on her head. Her brother hands her the tray containing the goodies, and she leads the procession toward her parent's room. As they tiptoe down the hallway, the melodic song begins: Now the light is carried forth, proud on its crown, in every house, and every home, the song shall ring. It is the morning of St. Lucia's Day in Sweden. The event that is taking place in this home is being mirrored across many Scandinavian countries, and has been since Medieval times. Luciadagen, St. Lucia's Day, is a very important holiday that signals the beginning of the Christmas season. Traditionally, the eldest daughter in the home portrays St. Lucia and serves the elder members of the family coffee and pastries in bed to honor them. It is a time when Grandparents and other family members often crowd into the house to spend the night in preparation for the morning's celebration.

The islands are geographically divided into "inner" and "outer" chains. The inner islands are volcanic in origin, and are characterized by rugged, mountainous terrain, heavy rainfall and lush vegetation. The high points of these islands are generally in the center, except for a few spectacular sheer slopes on some coastlines. High points of elevation vary from 1,000 to 5,000 feet. The outer islands have a coral limestone base and are relatively flat and less rainy than the inner islands.
Dominica is the largest and most northerly of the Windward islands. It lies between Guadeloupe to the north and Martinique to the south. Its terrain is rugged and mountainous with considerable annual rainfall and extensive rainforest.
St. Lucia is 27 miles long and 14 miles wide. It lies between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean and is situated to the south of Martinique and the north of St. Vincent. It is a volcanic and mountainous island whose highest peak is Morne Gimie (3,145ft).
Antigua's 108 square miles (280 sq. km) are mainly coral based and low lying, but the south is particularly fertile, with undulating hills of volcanic origin. The highest point (1,319 feet, 405 m) is at Boggy Peak. The coastline is deeply indented and provides many natural harbors.

adjustments to Baba. For those who've ridden our trails, they will know what I mean when I say we have some of the nicest (not necessarily easiest) riding trails you'll find anywhere from the novice level to the advanced Tinker's Trail. They run through jungle, up and down hills, and by centuries old ruins into the past by way of the present.
Our trail research took us to the site of World Cup cross-country races and to well-respected recreational trails of varying skill levels throughout the US and Canada. We learned a lot about trails and how to get lost on them while at it. We quickly learned that we didn't like seemingly unnecessary trail hazards. We encountered vertically cut, sharply pointed roots in the middle of a narrow run poised to disembowel tire or rider. There were the low lying, head crunching 4 inch thick tree limbs lurking unseen around tight corners and trail signs at odds with trail maps and compass. We didn't care too much for the horse poop on the trails, either. But we also learned what we do like. We like the varying terrain that paced itself or allowed you to pace yourself. We like trails put in places that combine the joy of riding with the scenic beauty of the area. And we like the variety of trail choices available in many areas. I'm not always up to riding 12 miles uphill for the sheer joy of gutting it out in the noon day sun while nimbly avoiding equestrian droppings. But on the days that I do feel like it, I'd like to have the option.
