History
The original island inhabitants were peaceful Arawak Indians who were later subdued by the warlike Caribs who gave the island many place names including Hewannora meaning "where the Iguana is found." Although there is tradition that Columbus discovered the island on one of his new world voyages, the best evidence suggests that he did not.
Geography
St. Lucia is located in the Southeastern Caribbean approximately 1,300 miles from Florida. It is part of the Windward Islands which in turn are part of the lesser Antilles which are part of the West Indies. This 238 square mile island is presently populated by about 150,000 people. The island is volcanic in origin. The majestic Pitons are visual evidence of this as are the sulfur springs. Soufrière, the city at the base of the Pitons, means sulfur. Beaches in the southwest, mountainous part of the island (such as Anse Chastanet) are black sand owing to the presence of lava rock. The rain forest is also located here in the mountainous region. The jungle foliage is lush and colorful. The northern part of the island is hilly rather than mountainous, and the beaches are more typically white sand. The colorful flowering foliage is still present, however.
Sightseeing and Touring
Our favorite spots tend to be on the north end of the island and along the Caribbean coast down to the Pitons. Pigeon island and the long beach that is on the causeway connecting the island to the mainland is one of our favorite spots. The hilltop on the island contains the remnants of Admiral Rodney's fort, and the long beach will be very private. The causeway road is just past Gros Islet the home of the Friday jumpup. This has become an institution with many of the villagers becoming street side vendors selling barbecued meats, rum punch, and other drinks. Reggae music will blare from a huge speaker system set up in the middle of the village. There will be dancing in the streets. The party really just gets going about midnight and will continue till dawn.

GEOGRAPHY
St. Lucia is of volcanic origin and around Soufriere in the South west, you can still see boiling bubbling mud pools escaping Sulphur and other gases. The volcanic crater is one of the islands main tourist attractions. The islands interior is wooded and mountainous, with Mount Gimmie (3118 ft) being the highest point on the island. Mountains run North to South with many rivers and streams running off them through fertile valleys running east to west. The "Twin" Pitons - "St. Lucia's Pyramids" are another spectacular landmark. They are on either side of Soufriere bay and their perspective changes as you view from different angles as you journey around them. The lush rain forests are now largely restricted to higher slopes of the mountains are only accessible by foot.
HISTORY The original settlers of the island migrated from the northeastern shores of the South American continent between 1000 and 500 B.C. These people were simple farmers and fishermen. Today, over 12 archaeological sites on the island bear witness to this ancient civilization. Remains of their culture consist primarily of domestic and ceremonial artifacts, ceramic objects and enigmatic cave drawings.

General Information
Area: 616.3 sq km (238 sq miles).
Population: 153,703 (official estimate 1999).
Population Density: 249.4 per sq km.
Capital: Castries. Population: 61,823 (official estimate 1999). GEOGRAPHY: St Lucia is the second largest of the Windward Islands. It has some of the finest mountain scenery in the West Indies, rich with tropical vegetation. For such a small island, 43km (27 miles) by 23km (14 miles), St Lucia has a great variety of plant and animal life. Orchids and exotic plants of the genus anthurium grow wild in the rainforests and the roadsides are covered with many colourful tropical flowers. Flamboyant trees spread shade and blossom everywhere. Indigenous wildlife includes a species of ground lizard unique to St Lucia, and the agouti and the manicou , two rodents, common throughout the island. The Amazon versicolor parrot is another, though more elusive, inhabitant of the deep interior rainforest. The highest peak is Mount Gimie at 950m (3117ft). Most spectacular are Gros Piton and Petit Piton, ancient, volcanic forest-covered cones which rise out of the sea on the west coast.
