Unlike large limestone areas such as Florida, Cuba, and the Yucatan Peninsula, or the Bahamas, which is a small island group composed of coral and sand, St. Lucia is a typical Windward Island formation of volcanic rock that came into existence long after much of the region had already been formed. St. Lucia's physical features are strikingly beautiful. Dominated by high peaks and rain forests in the interior, the 616- square-kilometer island is known for the twin peaks of Gros Piton and Petit Piton on the southwestern coast, its soft sandy beaches, and its magnificent natural harbors. Mount Gimie, the highest peak, is located in the central mountain range and rises to 958 meters above sea level, a contrast that is also evident in the abrupt climatic transition from coastal to inland areas. The steep terrain also accentuates the many rivers that flow from central St. Lucia to the Caribbean. Fertile land holdings, which support banana farming, are scattered throughout the island.

Which means that you can see every beach that St. Lucia has to offer no matter where you stay. However, some hotels make access difficult, but by law there is a public path to the beach or you may reach it by boat. Chairs, umbrellas etc. are "free" for registered guests only. St. Lucia has historically relied on the agricultural sector, primarily its banana exports. However, St. Lucian banana exports made a staggering drop from about $52.4 million in 1996 to only $19.7 million in 1998. This 62 percent decline came in response to the World Trade Organization (WTO) decision to terminate the European Union's (EU) preferential treatment toward the Windward Islands' banana trade. The intent of the WTO is to liberalize international trade, and the United States backed this decision to terminate the preferential treatment that St. Lucia enjoyed. The entire community of St. Lucia feels the pains of the hurting banana industry. Anthony addressed the impact of liberalized trade and globalization on small economies in a recent speech he delivered to Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
