Netball is one of the many games played in Nevis, but not many Nevisians know the role this game has played over the years, nor even how it started. Did you know that netball has put Nevis on the world map? If not, please read on. Netball originated in the United States of America, and was introduced to the Caribbean by Physical education officers from England who came to the Islands on teaching assignments. Althought the game is played in the USA , it is not popular, whereas it is popular in the United Kingdom. Netball in Nevis is without a doubt the outstanding women’s sport. Prior to 1950 Netball was introduced and played by the Excelsior School on the grounds of St Pauls Rectory. An annual competition was held between the Excelsior School of Nevis and the Girls High School from St Kitts. 1939 - 1940 saw a change. Schools no longer exchanged visits, but ex-pupils from the Excelsior School and the Girls High School played matches in both islands with Nevis always winning. 1945 - 1955 teams from the Charlestown Girls School and ex -pupils from the Charlestown Secondary School practiced at Liburd’s Yard (the ground on which the Administration Building now stands).

Caribbean Links Regional Hotspots When the British captured Trinidad in 1797 there where many battles for islands taking place in the Caribbean region. The European wars for territories in the Caribbean reached a high point in the 1790s. The French Revolution of 1789 added a civil war to the equation. Revolt reigned in the islands, in St. Lucia, Grenada, Dominica, among the maroons - former slaves who had taken to the Blue Mountains of Jamaica’s central range -, and most violent of all, in Haiti. There was heavy fighting in the Eastern Caribbean. British troops took Martinique in 1794. A month or two later, they landed in Guadeloupe. There, the British came up against Victor Hugues, leader of the French Revolution in the Caribbean. He had sailed from Marseilles, France, the year before. His squadron attacked the British in 1795 in Basseterre and forced them out of Guadeloupe by the end of that year. Victor Hugues set to work to drive the British out of these islands and to convert people to the cause of the revolution of republican France. Agents were sent to St. Vincent. Troops were sent in after the agents, and before long the English were hard pressed to keep Kingstown, while the French, made up of black and coloured troops, and the Caribs held the rest of the island. Hugues dispatched his agents to Jamaica, where a full-fledged war was waged by the maroons, slaves who had freed themselves, and the British troops. They were so heavily engaged that no reinforcements could be sent to relieve General Maitland’s fever-stricken English soldiers in Haiti. By 1798, the English were compelled to leave Haiti, however in Jamaica, the black maroons had been crushed.

This was due to high death rates and small birth rates among the Caribbean slave population at the time. New slaves from Africa had to be imported continuously. In Barbados, for instance, 387,000 slaves were imported but at the time of emancipation in 1834 there were only 81,000 to be freed. Caribbean slavery was different from any other form of slavery that has ever existed. Its commercial relations with the West Indies began with a group of merchants from Halifax, Nova Scotia, who formed the Merchant's Bank in 1864, and were engaged in the thriving sea-going trade between Halifax and the West Indies. In those days Canadian southbound ships carried mainly flour, codfish and timber, returning north with their cargoes of sugar, rum, cotton and spices. Through branches established in all major trade centres in the Caribbean, RBC offered valuable facilities for promoting trade. Early days The bank's first venture south was Bermuda in 1882 followed by Cuba in 1899. By 1914, the bank's international network included Puerto Rico, Bahamas, Trinidad, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Barbados, British Honduras (now Belize) and Grenada. In that same year, RBC purchased the British Guiana Bank that had opened in 1836. By 1984 the bank had opened a total of 15 branches in Guyana (formerly British Guiana) and in November 1984 RBC ceased to operate in Guyana. The Bio-diversity Centre in Georgetown, created to study Guyana's largely intact rain forest, was built with funds from RBC's operations in Guyana, since it was impossible to take them out of the country due to foreign exchange restrictions.
