A Guide to the Celebration of the Wearin' o' the Green
St. Patrick’s Day originated in Ireland in honor of the missionary who brought Ireland Christianity. He also drove all of the snakes out of Ireland and taught the concept of the Holy Trinity using a shamrock, hence the connections these plants have with the holiday. Saint Patrick’s day is celebrated in Ireland the United States and Canada with parades, dances and dinners. The largest parade held on this special day is in New York City where everyone is Irish for a day. The following are the Curriculum Library’s best picks for St. Patrick's Day with which you can brighten your classroom with the color green, rainbows and pots of gold as you study Ireland, the “Emerald Isle,” and celebrate this great holiday. Speaker's Remarks at St. Patricks Day Luncheon March 17, 1999

Speaker Denny Hastert (R-IL) made the following remarks at the 19 th annual St. Patrick's Day luncheon: In Northern Ireland, the peace process is at a critical stage. I want to congratulate all of the brave men and women who have worked so hard to get the process this far." It is my high honor and personal privilege to have you all here in the United States House of Representatives for this special day. This is the 19th annual St. Patrick's Day Lunch. Started by the late Tip O'Neill, this luncheon is a fitting tribute to the contributions of the Irish to the development of our nation. Our nations' histories are intertwined by the influx of humanity from Ireland, and they continue to be linked by millions of Irish Americans who proudly wear their green every St. Patrick's Day. Of course, history has its own ironies. For example, St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was originally born in England. Ronald Reagan, the patron saint of Republicans born in my district in a town called Dixon was raised a Democrat. Maybe there is a message here that we can all learn. Success comes from understanding the other side. Now, it is more important than ever to understand the other side. In Northern Ireland, the peace process is at a critical stage. I want to congratulate all of the brave men and women who have worked so hard to get the process this far. And we are all concerned about the latest news.

Thoughts Photos ... Erin Go Braugh St Patrick
The Patron Saint of Irelend Customs and Traditions
The person who was to become St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was born in Wales about AD 385. His given name was Maewyn, and he almost didn't get the job of bishop of Ireland because he lacked the required scholarship. Far from being a saint, until he was 16, he considered himself a pagan. At that age, he was sold into slavery by a group of Irish marauders that raided his village. During his captivity, he became closer to God. He escaped from slavery after six years and went to Gaul where he studied in the monastery under St. Germain, bishop of Auxerre for a period of twelve years. During his training he became aware that his calling was to convert the pagans to Christianity. His wishes were to return to Ireland, to convert the native pagans to Christianity. But his superiors instead appointed St. Palladius. But two years later, Palladius transferred to Scotland. Patrick, having adopted that Christian name earlier, was then appointed as second bishop to Ireland. Patrick was quite successful at winning converts. And this fact upset the Celtic Druids. Patrick was arrested several times, but escaped each time. He traveled throughout Ireland, establishing monasteries across the country. He also set up schools and churches which would aid him in his conversion of the Irish country to Christianity.

Benishe Roberts and Tyra Harper of the United State Professional Volleyball league's Minnesota Chill gave exhibitions and instructions to more than 70 local area athletes Thursday at Savannah Country Day. "We wanted to give them a bigger picture of how volleyball is growing," Roberts said. "I wanted to impress to them that with hard work, they can play in college and on a professional level." Roberts was the 2002 USPV Most Valuable Player. She is a former U.S. National Team player and a member of the 1998 Long Beach State NCAA National Championship team. Harper played her college volleyball at Central Florida. The outside hitter of the Chill helped lead the team to the USPV 2002 Championship. "We only have four teams in the league right now, but we will be having 10 next season," Harper said. "Atlanta is one of the cities scheduled to come into the league."

    St. Patrick's Day - March 17
    Explore Ireland and the Irish
History Events Books, Movies and Music Links History of St. Patrick's Day Just like many other holidays in the United States, St. Patrick's Day has its origins in ancient times. A young boy named Patrick lived in the British Isles, a land that had been invaded and conquered first by the Romans and then by Germanic tribes. Patrick was captured and taken as a slave from the British Isles to what is now Ireland. He lived there for several years herding sheep. He was a religious boy and he prayed that he would someday return to his homeland. Legend has it that one night while he was praying, a voice told him to escape from the farm, and find a ship that was waiting for him two hundred miles away. At home, Patrick felt that he was called by God to perform an important mission. He believed it was his duty to go back to Ireland and convert the Celtic people to the Christian religion.

I have created this homepage for early childhood educators who use thematic lesson planning. While surfing the web, I found many wonderful early childhood web sites that included thematic units, however, I needed a way to organize the sites so that I could easily find lessons and ideas for each specific theme that I wanted to use. Here it is! To use this site... just scroll through the list of themes and when you find a theme that you are interested in, select a link....it will take you directly to a site about that theme. The 'Confession' of Saint Patrick
This autobiographical confession was written by Patrick himself, in Latin, around the year 450. It offers a unique record of life in the British Isles during those times. St. Patrick wasn't Irish, he was British.
The color of St Patrick isn't green, it is blue.
There might have been TWO St. Patricks.
Christianity had probably come to Ireland before St. Patrick arrived,
since he was sent to minister to the Christians in Ireland.
St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland, although he was born in Britain. Many miracles have been attributed to the bishop, including the driving of the snakes from Ireland. His sainthood derives from his conversion of the Irish Celtic pagans to Christianity. He used the native shamrock as a symbol of the holy trinity when preaching and brought the Latin alphabet to Ireland. March 17 is the feast day of St. Patrick, of course.
Patrick was born around 385 in Scotland, probably Kilpatrick, in a Romanized family. His father was Calpurnius, a local official, and his mother was Conchessa.
