Guidance Each student is assigned a faculty advisor who reports directly to the Director of Guidance. Each faculty advisor is responsible for eight to ten students. Beginning in grade ten, the College Placement Office begins the formal college search. This becomes increasingly intensive through the first semester of the senior year at which point all applications have been filed on behalf of the student.
Standardized Testing
Admiral Farragut Academy has been designated a national testing site for the ACT, SAT I, and SAT II. Juniors and seniors are required to test on six occasions to benefit from score improvement. In addition, sophomores and juniors take the PSAT every October. The entire student body is administered the CAT (California Achievement Test) on an annual basis. International students are required to take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) during the first semester of the senior year for college placement purposes. A typical senior class earns a mean score of ten to fifteen percent higher than the national average on both the SAT I and the ACT. The average TOEFL score for the class of 1997 was 598.
Dual Enrollment

Glen Allen, VA 23059 General Information The Guidance and School Counseling program at SPMS is a planned, sequential service that is proactive in scope and developmental in nature. Our purpose is to assist students in exploring possible pathways that will provide positive academic, career, personal, and social education. Students may come to the Guidance and School Counseling Center reception area on the second floor before school, at lunch time, between classes, or after school, when time permits. Students must have a pass or an appointment to see a counselor, except in unusual or emergency situations. Appointment slips are placed in the mailbox of the homeroom teacher. They are given to the student, and it is generally the student’s responsibility to keep the appointment. Students are responsible for making up any classwork missed during an appointment and/or during a group session. If the student is absent or cannot keep the appointment for some reason (i.e., scheduled in the middle of taking a test), the student may note the reason and return the slip to guidance. A new appointment will be scheduled. Calling a student out of class for an unscheduled appointment will be done only when absolutely necessary. STANDARDIZED COLLEGE-LEVEL TESTS DEFINITION
Credit or a waiver may be awarded for learning evaluated by standardized examinations, which are available through a variety of testing agencies. The acceptable grade and credit assignment will be determined by the department chair for each subject area being tested. College credit will be given on a Marist transcript as CBE, credit by examination. Two of the most common standardized tests available to adult students are Excelsior College Examinations (ECE) and the College Level Exam Program (CLEP).
DETERMINING WHICH TEST TO TAKE Students may not receive credit for standardized test results if they have already received transfer credit for similar learning at colleges previously attended so you need to be careful about reviewing your transfer credits before signing up for an examination. If you have questions about this, please speak with your advisor.
Marist requires that students taking the CLEP examinations do so in one of the subject areas (as opposed to the general examinations). Many subject examinations are designed to correspond to one-semester courses; some, however, correspond to full-year or two-year courses. Each Subject Examination is 90 minutes long and is composed of multiple-choice questions to be answered in two separately timed sections. Currently, CLEP offers examinations in the following subject areas:

Applying to Boarding School
Once you have narrowed down your choices, it is time to begin the paperwork. While there is no magic number, you are encouraged to apply to several schools to give yourself plenty of options. Schools determine their own deadlines and requirements. Ask each school to which you are applying for their deadlines and required materials. Do not assume that requirements and deadlines are consistent from one school to the next. MIDDLE SCHOOL CREDITS When students below the ninth grade successfully complete courses offered for credit in grades 9 through 12, credit shall be counted toward meeting the units required for graduation (Standards and Regulations for Public Schools in Virginia, 2000). The grades and credits of these students shall be recorded on the middle school student cumulative data card and the high school transcript when the student enters high school. Grades for high school credits earned below grade 9 are included in the student’s grade point average and class rank. In any high school credit-bearing course taken in middle school, parents may request that grades be omitted from the student’s transcript and the student not earn high school credit for the course.

There are four main standardized tests you should be familiar with and take if you are considering going to college. If you are already in college and preparing to go on to graduate, business, law, or medical school, there are additional exams you'll have to prepare for. Check with your high school counselor or the schools you're interested in attending to find out what test or tests they require you to take. Also, ask your counselor, contact the testing agencies, or check your local bookstore for samples of past tests to become familiar with what to expect.   • PLAN . The PLAN is the pre-ACT test taken by tenth-graders to help students estimate how well they will do on the ACT. It is a comprehensive guidance resource that helps students measure their current academic development, explore career/training options, and make plans for the remaining years of high school and post-graduation years.
