King of Great Britain
The kingdoms of England and Scotland did not merge into a single nation until 1707, when the Act of Union was passed by the respective Parliaments. With the accession of the House of Stuarts to the throne of England in 1603, the personal union emerged, but the countries remained separate polities. King James I was the first British monarch, who began using "king of Great Britain" to avoid more complicated "king of England and Scotland" and to emphasize the unity of the two kingdoms. A royal proclamation of 20 Oct 1604, which was published on 24 Oct 1604 for England and proclaimed for Scotland in November 1604, provided an official status for the style "king of Great Britain": At the same time the proclamation restricted the application of the new style emphasizing its non-statutory use: And for that Wee doe not Innovate or assume to Us any new thing, but declare that which is and hath bene evident to all; Our will and pleasure is, That in such Appellations or Nominations, as shall be hereafter made by force of these presents, the same shall bee expressed in such and the same maner and forme, and after such computation, as if we had assumed and declared the same the first day of our Raigne of our Realme of England; Forbearing onely for the present that any thing herein conteined doe extend to any Legall proceeding, Instrument, or Assurance, untill further Order be taken in that behalfe.

The Geography of the UK
The United Kingdom, which is made up of consists of England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern. England is separated from Scotland by the granite Cheviot Hills; from them the Pennine chain of uplands extends south through the centre of England, reaching its highest point in the Lake District in the northwest. To the west along the border of Wales, a land of steep hills and valleys, are the Cambrian Mountains, while the Cotswolds, a range of hills in Gloucestershire, extend into the surrounding shires. Important rivers are the Thames, Humber, Tees, and Tyne which flow into the North Sea. In the west are the Severn and Wye, which empty into the Bristol Channel, there is also the Mersey which flows through Liverpool.
People
Great Britain is the fourth most populated country in Europe. Great Britain's population has changed rapidly since the 1970’s, when people from the West Indies, India, Pakistan, Africa, and China began moving into the UK, in the late 1990s these groups accounted for close to 3% of the population. Although English is the universal language of Great Britain. Wales has its own language. About a quarter of Welsh people speak Welsh. Scotland also has its own language with about 60,000 speakers of the Scottish language known as Gaelic.

James Stuart was a Scottish Catholic who believed in the "Divine Right" to rule as he pleased. This brought him into conflict with the English Parliament. The failed Catholic Gunpowder Plot to blow up Parliament in 1605 led to anti catholic riots. The failure of both James and his son Charles I to understand the English tradition of parliamentary liberty led eventually to civil war James died unlamented in 1625. Charles I immediately came in to conflict with Parliament. He tried to rule without summoning parliament for 11 years, but eventually ran out of money, and summoned Parliament in 1640 Parliament was naturally peeved about his neglect of their rights. They refused him money, and the country split between supporters of the king (blue on map left) and supporters of parliament (red on the map) The first major Engagement of the Civil War was at Edgehill in the Cotswolds on 1642. Indecision among the Royalists and the moulding of the New Model army by the parliamentarians led to Parliament gaining the upper hand, and by 1645 Cromwell won the decisive Battle of Naseby. Charles was captured and put on trial for treason in 1649. He refused to recognise the court, but was regardless found guilty. 59 republicans signed the death warrant (above), and after the restoration Charles II prosecuted those that he could.

Stuart England - the later Stuarts
James II James II. Charles II was succeeded by his brother James II (1685-88). James was a Catholic, and he made several awkward attempts to re-establish the rights of Catholics, which succeeded only in allying the Whigs and Tories against him. In 1685 Charles' illegitimate son, the Duke of Monmouth, launched a rebellion with the support of the farmers and labourers of Somerset. The Pitchfork Rebellion ended at the Battle of Sedgemoor, often called the last battle fought upon British soil. The aftermath to the Monmouth's Rebellion was a speedy and savage series of trials of those who had supported him. These were the Bloody Assizes, presided over by the infamous Judge Jeffreys, who condemned hundreds of men to death. Popular opinion grew against James after a son was born to him, raising the prospect of a Catholic dynasty. Parliament extended an invitation to the firmly Protestant William and Mary of Orange (modern Holland) to take the English throne. James fled to France, where Louis XIV set him up with a Stuart "court".

The Stuarts 1603 - 1713 Charles I, unable to work with Parliament, attempted to rule without it. Eventually he was to raise his standard against the parliamentary forces, leading to civil war and his eventual judicial murder. England was to be a republic until the collapse of Cromwell's Commonwealth and the restoration of Charles II in 1660. Shortly afterwards, a devastating plague swept through the country followed by the Great Fire of London. Compromise between the crown and Parliament finally achieved a balanced government and the two kingdoms of England and Scotland became joined in the 1707 Act of Union. Articles
