was married to a Spanish princess called Catherine of Aragon, but only had one daughter ( Mary ) in 18 years of marriage. Henry wanted to divorce Catherine so that he could have a son, but the Pope refused to allow this. He therefore created a separate Church which did not regard the Pope as its leader, although Henry still supported Catholic beliefs . He married Anne Boleyn, but she produced another daughter ( Elizabeth ). He accused her of having a love affair and she was killed (beheaded). He married Jane Seymour and had a son (

He became (1698) elector of Hanover, fought in the War of the Spanish Succession, and in 1714 succeeded Queen Anne under the provisions of the Act of Settlement , becoming the first British sovereign of the house of Hanover . He was personally unpopular in England because of his German manners, his German mistresses (see Schulenburg, Ehrengard Melusina von der, duchess of Kendal ), his treatment of his divorced wife, Sophia Dorothea , and his inability to speak English. George's dual role as elector of Hanover and king of England also raised problems; he spent much of his time in Hanover and was widely (although unjustly) believed to be indifferent to English affairs. Yet, despite the uprising of the

The war between France and England seems to be producing an effect not contemplated. All the old spirit of 1776, rekindling the newspapers from Boston to Charleston, proves this; and even the monocrat papers are obliged to publish the most furious philippics against England. A French frigate took a British prize off the capes of Delaware the other day, and sent her up here [Philadelphia]. Upon her coming into sight, thousands and thousands of the yeomanry of the city crowded and covered the wharves. Never before was such a crowd seen there; and when the British colors were seen

GREAT BRITAIN Admiralty Mediterranean Steam Packets
by Colin Tabeart
The first steam mail packets to the Iberian Peninsula were those of the Peninsular Steam Navigation Company in 1837? – WRONG! The first steam packet service in the Mediterranean was that of the French packets from Marseilles, also in 1837? – WRONG!
This book chronicles this pioneering Admiralty steam packet service, with details of the ships, their sailing dates, Commanding Officers, and events of significance, as taken direct from their logs at the Public Record Office, supported by contemporary newspaper articles and cover evidence. When, from 1837, parts of the route started to be performed by contractors, their voyages are tied in with those of HM Ships, to present a continuous service.
The book goes on to show that, contrary to most previous opinion, almost all British mail via France to Egypt and on to India was carried by British packets from Marseilles. There is full coverage of the routes from England to Cadiz, Gibraltar, Malta, Alexandria, the Ionian Islands, Greece, and the short-lived branch line from Alexandria to Beyrout, and an important chapter on postage rates by the British packets, including the route via France.
If you are interested in mail that travelled to, from, within, or through the Mediterranean between 1830 and 1857 this book will add a new dimension to your thoughts on how those letters were carried.

Civil War Erupts The Stuarts held the throne through a century of civil war and religious dissension, but they were not as capable as the Tudors in walking the line between the demands of a strong centralized monarchy and the rights increasingly demanded by the representatives of the people in Parliament. Charles I, attracted by the French idea of the divine right of the king, considered himself above the law, a mistake the Tudors had never made (Elizabeth, in particular, was clever and careful in her dealings with Parliament). Charles's position was a fatal response to the Puritans and other dissenters who sought far more power. In 1629, Charles dissolved Parliament, determined to rule without it. Civil War followed, and the victory went to the Roundheads under Oliver Cromwell. Charles I was put on trial and was led to his execution, stepping onto the scaffold through the window of his gloriously decorated Banqueting House. His once-proud head rolled on the ground. Oliver Cromwell, the melancholy, unambitious, clumsy farmer, became Britain's first and only virtual dictator. He saw his soldiers as God's faithful servants, and promised them rewards in heaven. The people, however, did not take kindly to this form of government, and after Cromwell's death, Charles II, the dead king's son, returned and was crowned in 1660, but he was given greatly limited powers.

Mary, Queen of Scots The power of the great lords of Scotland was broken only in 1603, when Mary's son, James VI of Scotland, assumed the throne of England as James I, Elizabeth's heir. James succeeded where his doomed mother had failed. He was the first of the Stuarts to occupy the English throne, and his coronation effectively united England and Scotland. Great Britain. Privy Council. Acts of the Privy Council of England. Colonial Series
Scope:
This collection reproduces the Acts of the Privy Council for the period from 1613 until 1783 (Volumes 1-6).
Arrangement:
Microcards are arranged chronologically by volume in the microcard cabinet under the above heading.
Notes:
The Privy Council was the chief source of executive power in England before the emergence of the cabinet system of government. It developed during the later years of the reign of Henry VIII (1509-1547), when the councillors at the King's side became permanently organized as a "privy council.'' Under the later Stuarts the Council declined in power due to the Stuart policy of working primarily with confidential committees within the council. Following the repeal in 1706 of the clause in the Act of Settlement (1701) which would have compelled all business to pass through the full Privy Council, it rapidly lost its political powers to the Cabinet. The Colonial Series can also be found in the stacks in hard copy (DA 25 .L3 1966.)

UK Phonebook GUIDE BOOKS Pitkin Guides London TRAVEL SERVICES Airport Transfers Car Rental Chapter 7: The Union of 1707 There were advantages for both countries in the Union, seen in retrospect as an act of policy, not affection. James II's youngest daughter was Anne, whose last surviving child, princess Anne did not survive. Thus, there was no direct successor to the throne. London was afraid that unless there was a formal, political union with Scotland firmly in place, the country might choose James Edward Stuart, Anne's exiled Catholic half-brother, instead of a new Protestant king from Hanover. Parliament had passed the Act of Settlement in 1701 to ensure that Anne's heir was to be the Electress Sophia of Hanover, granddaughter of James I. Thus, when William died in 1702, Queen Anne succeeded him; on his deathbed, he recommended a union with Scotland. In 1703, the Scottish Parliament passed an Act of Security that provided for a Protestant Stuart succession upon Anne's death, unless the Scottish government was freed from "English or any foreign influence." The English Parliament responded with an Alien's Act that prohibited all Scottish imports to England unless the Scots accepted the Hanoverian succession. The Scots reluctantly succumbed in order to gain the advantage of free trade with the new British common market. In 1707, the Act of Union cemented what had been a growing interdependence between the two countries.

Diana Spencer. Born 7.45 pm 1 July 1961, Sandringham. Died 4.00 am 31 August 1997, Paris.
Neti [the gatekeeper] asked:
"Who are you?" She [Inanna, the goddess of the planet Venus] answered:
"I am Inanna, Queen of Heaven, On my way to the East." Neti said:
"If you are truly Inanna, Queen of Heaven, On your way to the East, Why has your heart led you on the road from which no traveller returns?" Inanna answered:
"Because...of my older sister, Erishkegal. Her husband, Gugalanna, the Bull of Heaven, has died. I have come to witness the funeral rites. Let the beer of his funeral rites be poured into the cup. Let it be done." [2]
Princess Diana was a human being, a woman, wife, mother, lover, possessed of the same hopes, wishes, frailties, insecurities, strengths, desires and myriad feelings and emotions which go to make up any individual - and which the rest of us share. Yet she became, at the age of nineteen, the focus for a collective psychological projection on a scale and intensity that few other people in this century have managed. Almost three weeks after her sad and tragic death it at last seems possible to put the nation's extraordinary emotional turmoil into some sort of perspective.

Scotland occupies the northernmost third of the island of Great Britain. Throughout the Middle Ages, Scotland and England were separate countries (although Scotland was often under English control). In 1603, however, upon the death of Queen Elizabeth, the English crown passed to her cousin, James VI of Scotland, who became James I of England. For the next century, England and Scotland were two kingdoms, each with its own parliament, sharing a monarch; in , the Scottish parliament was incorporated into the English, and the two countries became one, Great Britain. Scots were at the center of the English Civil Wars of the seventeenth century: the executed Charles I was of the Scottish Stuart. Later, when the Stuarts were driven from Great Britain in favor of William and Mary and the Hanoverians, the exiled Stuarts found many allies among the Highland Scots, who supported a series of attempted invasions in the eighteenth century. A very minor uprising in was quickly put down, but was succeeded by a more significant one in ("the 'Fifteen"), led by the Old Pretender, James Edward, and by a still more important one in
