His first marriage (with Anne Ayliffe in 1629) connected him with the powerful Villiers family, and his second in 1634, with Frances Aylesbury, substantially improved his position. He represented Wootton Bassett and Saltash in the Parliaments which preceded the Civil War, and during the Long Parliament attracted the king's attention as a champion of the royal prerogative. Throughout the War he was prominent among the king's advisers, and took the leading part in the negotiations which preceded the Restoration. In June 1660 he was rewarded with the office of Lord High Chancellor, and in the next year was created Earl of Clarendon. In 1667 his enemies procured his impeachment, and Clarendon fled to the Continent, where he set himself to literary labour, revising and competing his History of the Rebellion (which he had begun in 1646), writing his autobiography, and composing essays and meditations on political and religious subjects, until his death at Rouen on 9 December 1674. His daughter Anne married James Duke of York and was the mother of Queen Mary and Queen Anne. From October 1660 to December 1667 Clarendon was Chancellor of the University of Oxford, where he had previously resided from 1642 to 1645. Further details are given in the

Royal Stuarts History of the Kilt The tartan kilt has long been the most recognisable cultural tradition of the Highland Scots. Therefore, it surprises most people that many of the most recognisable features and traditions associated with the wearing of the kilt have, in fact, been developed in the nineteenth century, not by Scottish Highlanders, but by the Nobles of England and Scotland. There is much evidence that many of the more recognisable tartans seen today are in fact creations of Scottish and English tailors during the reign of Queen Victoria. Despite this, it has generally been accepted that the basic concepts of the tartan and the wearing of the kilt do indeed have their origin in the history of the early Scottish and Irish clans, or families. It has been demonstrated that certain clans did aspire to a certain uniformity of design for their garments as early as the tenth and eleventh centuries. The word kilt comes from Middle English meaning fold or pleat. The Gaelic term is Feileadh beag (anglicized as "philabeg"). It was devised in the early 1700's by cutting down the Feileach mhor or the great kilt with sewn pleats at the waist. The Gaelic word for tartan is breacan, meaning partially colored or speckled, and every tartan today features a multicolored arrangement of stripes and checks. These patterns, or sett's, are used to identify the clan,family, or regiment with which the wearer is associated.

Brief Scottish History There has been no war in Scotland for over 250 years. Fierce warriors and Clans are no longer important and Clan Chiefs have no authority. Kilts are worn only for ceremonial purposes and no Scottish king dwells in Edinburgh Castle. More than four thousand years ago the first people settled in Scotland. Like the Celts, who arrived about 300 BC, they came from Europe. The Picts arrived around 1000 BC. The Roman Army came in 55 BC. Gnaeus Julius Agricola, Governor of Britain (77-84), invaded Caledonia, i. e., Scotland, in an effort to bring it under Roman control. The people of Caledona, called Picts, because they painted their bodies, were defeated, but not conquered. The Picts continued to harass and encumber the Romans, which caused them to build a northern defensive wall (Hadrian's Wall) across England. The Romans vacated the country by AD 410. The Scots, a Celtic Tribe from Northern Ireland, settled on Scotland's west coast about AD. 500. Through a series of battles, 841-846, Kenneth I, son of Alpine, King of Scots, conquered the Picts and expanded his kingdom to become Scotland. There were many violent struggles for the Scottish Throne in the 900's and later. Kenneth III became king in 997 by killing Constantine III. In 1005 Malcolm II killed Kenneth III. Duncan I, who followed Malcolm II, was murdered in 1040 by Macbeth, one of his generals. Macbeth ruled Scotland until 1057 when he was killed in battle, by a son of Duncan I, who later became, King Malcolm III.

The House of Hanover There were a lot of better qualified people available to be king of England - unfortunately most of them were Catholic. George I was a German who did not speak a word of English, but was Protestant. So started the rule of the House of Hanover, under whom Britain achieved wealth and peace over the next century George was immediately challenged by James II's son, James the Old Pretender, landing in Scotland in an abortive attempt to seize the throne. James soon fled back into exile in France With foreign kings. parliament became more powerful, and the leading politician was Walpole (right) who was prime minister until 1742. He avoided the expense of war, and Britain prospered In 1745 the exiled Stuarts led by James II's grandson, Bonnie Prince Charlie.His Highland army got as far south as Derby, but a poor supply line and English reinforcements forced them to retreat. A retreat that ended with the final defeat at Culloden The coming of George III (right) to the throne in 1760, brought the first British born king for 50 years.
