Search Research Alliance for Minorities Background The Research Alliance for Minorities program is designed to provide collaborative research experiences among faculty and students at colleges or universities and DOE national laboratory researchers. These experiences will improve the U.S. competitive research edge while encouraging and promoting SMET research throughout the academic year. statistics This program is sponsored by the Mathematical, Information, and Computational Sciences Division; Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research; U.S. Department of Energy. Program Description Undergraduate and graduate students intern at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) during a summer term of 10 - 12 weeks. Each student is assigned to an SMET research mentor to work on a project of interest to the student, the student's professor(s), and the ORNL researcher. Requirements of the program are to keep a daily journal of activities and experiences, attend weekly technical seminars, attend skills-enhancing workshops, write a summary paper describing the research project, give an oral presentation of research results, and present the project in poster sessions and symposia at ORNL and national conferences. The participant may arrange academic credit through his/her college or university.

Student Internships
Overseas Internships are a fundamental part of the Thunderbird curriculum. The internship program was begun in the summer of 1981. During the past two years, more than 300 students per year have been placed in internships for at least three-month periods in more than 30 countries. Though not a School requirement, we are placing U.S. students overseas and non-U.S. students in U.S. internships. Approximately 60 percent of the full-time internship assignments in the past three years have been outside of the United States. The search for overseas internships is a continuous and expensive process. David Martin is managing this project. Overseas Internships are expanding beyond the approximately 150 per year that the School has developed to date. This increase in such opportunities gives more of our own students, and students from other schools who become involved with our Overseas Programs, an experience in cross-cultural living that serves them very well in future international business contexts. Our goal is to double the number of these internships made available each year by the end of the CIBER cycle. With the assistance of the Department of Biological Sciences, The Botanic Garden has been able to identify students interested in pursuing plant science and horticulture internships during the summer months. Since 1994 we have been sending two students each summer to study at the prestigious Kew Gardens in London. There they study the relationship of plant families, evolution, and the natural history of:
  • conservation biology
  • ecology
  • landscape architecture
  • public gardening
  • horticulture

The Bren School places a strong emphasis on professional experience. All students are encouraged to gain such experience through internships, part-time positions, professional memberships, conferences, fellowships, group projects, site visits, and practical class assignments. All Bren students are expected to complete internships during the summer between their first and second year. Professional experience allows students to learn about a particular field, develop contacts in a field of interest, gain valuable experience, and apply what they have learned in the classroom to real world situations. Coming out of a professional school with no practical experience and/or no summer internship experience is unacceptable to most employers. Practical experience ranks at the top of the list of what employers like to see in job candidates. Don't let your Bren School education go to waste because you failed to get involved in external professional activities.

Student Internships in Biomolecular Nanotechnology
The interface between Biomolecular Nanotechnology and commercial enterprise. This is a fine academic concern, but are any real companies interested in developing this kind of technology? Absolutely. We have developed a series of collaborative interactions with companies that involve joint research and student internships. These companies are not only interested in developing the technology, they are interested in the possibility of hiring our students. What companies? How about:
  • The Biochip division of Motorola which makes DNA biochips for sensing specific DNA sequences hybridizing to large arrays of DNA probes.
