New area of study available at the University of Kansas School of Nursing
The KU nurse educator Certificate provides web-based nursing education to better prepare advanced practice nurses for faculty roles. Paired with faculty mentors throughout the certificate program, students complete applied teaching projects in each educator course and specific teaching assignments in advanced clinical courses, completing a final capstone with student teaching experience. Students can complete the nurse educator certificate within their master's program or as a post-master's focus. Post-master's students apply as non-degree graduate students.
Benefits to completing the certificate include:

      A college education develops the critical thinking skills and the moral behavior of people in order for them to become better citizens. As professors, we develop students' critical thinking skills by having them take a wide variety of classes that require them to think outside the box and to develop a pattern of learning that will last a lifetime. We develop their moral behavior by teaching them more about the world around them and their contributing role in its existence. As a mathematics professor, I have the special opportunity to accomplish these goals through a subject area that most students do not enjoy. It is my role as a teacher to guide the students in their struggle to understand and appreciate the beauty of mathematics using the many different tools in my Teaching Toolbox . As a result of this struggle, students develop a better understanding of the world they live in, they can communicate more clearly in our technical society, and they have developed the tools necessary to continue their learning process throughout their lifetimes.

    Introduction
    From a very young age, I knew that I wanted to be a teacher. I started tutoring in high school as part of my duties for the National Honor Society. I found that I really enjoyed helping others learn. During my first year as an undergraduate at the University of Vermont (UVM), I had the opportunity to help some friends in my calculus class. They did not understand the professor, so each day after class I would "lecture" to them on the concepts that the professor had covered. I felt like I was helping my friends to better understand calculus. I seemed to have the knack for explaining things in a way that others could understand. Tutoring my friends also gave me the opportunity to solidify my own understanding of the material. I knew then that I wanted to become a math professor. My teaching portfolio provides me, as well as others, with an opportunity to look at what I have done thus far as a mathematics teacher. In this portfolio, I describe my personal teaching philosophy as well as the methods I have employed as a mathematics teacher and tutor. (

    The following is a list of classes for which I've been a Teaching Assistant (a.k.a. Graduate Student Instructor):
    As my evaluations show, my teaching abilities have improved greatly since my first term as a TA. This is in spite of the fact that I've never been a TA for the same course for the same professor more than once, and so have not had the benefit of practicing the exact same material every quarter (though there has been much overlap across classes). I've chosen to teach a wide variety of courses in order to broaden my experience. I am confident I can now teach any of the following classes myself as a professor. Spring 2001: Econ 11, Intermediate Microeconomics Students for this class were most concerned about how to work through homework problems and practice problems for the exams. The professor described concepts in lecture, so discussion sections were mostly devoted to problem solving.

    Each student in the UTeach program generates a teaching portfolio, a purposeful collection of work arranged to demonstrate his or her successful preparation for certification. Portfolios are jointly reviewed by a team of UT faculty, AISD teachers and school administrators familiar with state proficiencies. The first portfolio review is required for formal admission to student teaching candidacy. Passing a final portfolio review is required for recommendation for certification. Details of what is required in a teaching portfolio are contained in the UTeach Portfolio Packet , in the Resources section below. In the near future UTeach students will be required to submit their portfolios electronically, rather than on paper.
