War Imminent Between Sudan and Eritrea
Relations between Sudan and Eritrea have nit a new low point, which has seen Isaias Afeworki, the President of Eritrea, heading for Cairo for an urgent meeting with the Arab League.
Sources in the Sudanese Foreign Ministry have confirmed that there is a strong possibility that a war will break out if Eritrea does not help to solve problems related with the frontier between the two countries.
An outbreak of war in an area devastated by hunger would be a recipe for a humanitarian disaster.

The history of the Nile region
by Muriel Mirak-Weissbach
Executive Intelligence Review June 9, 1995, pp. 19-27 The rich history of Sudan presents many paradoxes, primary among them, the paradox of its relationship to Egypt. Throughout ancient history, the culture of dynastic Egypt and that of the Nubians were intertwined, at times in conflict, at times at peace. During the periods of peaceful coexistence, if not actual alliances, both cultures prospered, the arts and literature flourished, regardless of which nation was the ruler. It was in fact under the reign of a Sudanese Pharoah, Piankhy (or Piye), in the XXVth dynasty, that Egyptian culture, which had fallen into decay, was renewed; monuments were built, and a great age in sculpture was inaugurated. When, however, outside forces invaded, as in the case of the Assyrians, Egypt and Sudan were set against each other. Egypt's continuing efforts to subjugate Sudan led to repeated invasions and conquests, each time driving the Sudanese power into retreat, in rump kingdoms, moving further south. The Sudanese, regardless of the pressures, held

Struggling to heard - The Christian voice in Independent Sudan
by Brian Adeba (986 words) Struggling to heard - The Christian voice in Independent Sudan
1956-1996 by Gino Barsella and Miguel A. Ayusu Guixot
published by Paulines publications, 1998 The book traces the tragic history of Africa's largest country from independence in 1956 to 1996. From the time Sudan's first Prime Minister, Ismail Al-Azhal was sworn in. The book systematically follows the comings and goings of successive regimes in Khartoum and how their policies have accelerated the sowing of the seeds of oppression and discontent among Christians in the Sudan by the enactment of such repressive laws like the missionary Act 1962, which was aimed at curbing the influence of Christian Missionaries, and the Miscellaneous Amendment (Organisation of Voluntary Work) Act 1994, which refers to churches as NGOs, Voluntary Agencies or as "purely human institutions" and ignoring the true nature of the Christian Faith as one of the "heavenly religions". The authors expose the fact that since independence, the Muslim North, which dominates the political arena in the Sudan, has consistently tried to forge national unity on the basis of Islam and Arabism only. Forceful Islamisation and Arabisation as carried out by the dictator Ibrahim Abboud in the sixties, ensured the expulsion of missionaries, open of Koronic schools (Khalwas) in the South, replacement of English as a medium of instruction in Southern Schools, the "nationalisation" of missionary schools and the abrogation of Sunday as a day of worship in the South. The authors postulate that such repressive laws still abound and continue to be pursued by Khartoum governments, and have largely contributed to the South's calls for succession instead of federation or regional autonomy.

The Eastern Mediterranean Region has the potential to be the first endemic region to eliminate lymphatic filariasis. In order to reach this aim, the endemic countries should interrupt transmission through effective programme implementation. The status of lymphatic filariasis in the non-endemic countries for which information is lacking should be adequately validated. The lymphatic filariasis-free countries should be certified as free from transmission. A regional workshop on elimination of lymphatic filariasis was held in April 2000 in Cairo, Egypt, with the objectives of reviewing the current situation of lymphatic filariasis and of existing filariasis surveillance and control activities, and of preparing a regional plan for lymphatic filariasis elimination. The regional plan sets regional and country specific targets to reach the goal of lymphatic filariasis elimination. a) Regional activities The general objective of the lymphatic filariasis elimination programme in the Eastern Mediterranean Region is to eliminate lymphatic filariasis as a public health problem by the year 2015.

The "Lost Boys of Sudan"
Background History of The Lost Boys of Sudan
The "Lost Boys of Sudan" are a group of refugees named after Peter Pan's cadre of orphans who clung together to escape a hostile adult world. Some 33,000 Sudanese boys and some girls were forced by violence from their southern Sudan villages since the mid-1980's. Sudan, which is located in East Africa, has experienced brutal civil war fueled by religious, ethnic and regional strive. (click on map to enlarge and then click on BACK on your browser to return to this page) Facts about the War in Sudan: The current phase of the civil war began in 1983, pitting the main rebel army, the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) and its allies against the government's military and its allies. Since 1983 this warfare has left nearly 4.5 million Sudanese uprooted from their homes. Combatants on all sides have targeted and exploited civilian populations. A 1998 study by the U.S. Committee for Refugees (USCR) estimated that 1.9 million people in southern and central Sudan had died of war-related causes since 1983. Another USCR report pointed out that Sudanese have suffered more war-related deaths during the past years since 1983 than any single population in the world. (

IRIN Webspecial on the Sudan Peace Process S UDAN: The border territories The Nubas are a polyglot of peoples, with sizeable numbers of animists, Christians and Muslims. The history of negotiations between the government of Sudan and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) has made clear that delineating the border between north and south Sudan is contentious, and the talks that led to the signing of the Machakos Protocol in July 2002 again confirmed this. The difficulty is particularly over whether the Nuba Mountains region of Southern Kordofan, southern Blue Nile (sometimes known as the Funj territory or, mistakenly, the Ingessena Hills) and Abyei - all of which have been part of north Sudan for administrative purposes since independence in 1956 - can be considered part of the south for the purposes of negotiations since groups based in these areas (or at least the two former ones) have launched insurrections under the SPLM/A, according to John Young, an expert on the Sudanese peace process LINK TO MAPS OF THESE TERRITORIES While these areas have suffered from political and economic under-development, and their people generally consider themselves Africans like southerners and not Arabs like the northerners, many - and, in some cases, the majority - are Muslims with strong ties to the north.

S udan O nline L ist V ersion O ne Sudan Online List is a collection of sites related to Sudan on the Internet. It was compiled using different Internet research tools. Sudan Online List does not claim to be a comprehensive list about Sudan on the Internet. As the Internet is changing rapidly many sites and documents are to be searched and included. Compiling list of this kind requires a lot of time and effort. Searching Sudan by using the Internet search engines could be misleading and time consuming as they may point to any document that contain the name SUDAN . You have to wade through hundreds of insignificant doucments and sites to find the subject of your interest. I spent a lot of time looking up sites to find out they are sites for a software named Soudan, homepages for some guys from Turkey with the last name Sudan, gifs for family's vacation in the red sea.. etc.!! I tried , in this list, to regroup sites or documents of relatively similar nature under certain categories defined by topic. By this I hope surfing the Internet for Sudan-related sites would be a lot easier and cost you less time online Sudan Online List is a list under construction. It would be updated and maintained regulary. As many other sites are yet to be added, the current enteries will be modified to further improve seaching.

The rise of the prosperous Songhai empire results in the growth of Islamic learning in centers like Timbuktu. Some of the oldest surviving wood sculpture from sub-Saharan Africa ensues from the establishment of the artistically rich agrarian Dogon peoples in the Bandiaga Escarpment area.
Muslim Dyula merchants establish trade posts throughout the central Sudan that link gold fields controlled by the Akan peoples in what is presently northern Ghana to trans-Saharan trade . The exchange of gold for cloth and metal wares enriches nascent Akan kingdoms such as Denkyira, Akani, and Akwamu, and introduces a system of cast brass weights based on North African prototypes that becomes an important medium of Akan artistic expression. Oral history suggests that the Dogon peoples migrated from the southwest into the Bandiagara region of what is now Mali. Linguistic evidence indicates that Dogon society came to embrace the migrants and autochthonous peoples from the territories they settled. Seeking protection from marauding

The 'Mahas Survey' is a University of Khartoum project undertaking a regional study of the archaeology and long-term history of the Mahas region of Middle Nubia, northern Sudan ( see map ). The area currently inhabited by Mahasi Nubians ( Nobiin speakers) extends north from around Tombos - Hannek (the southern end of the Nile Third Cataract) to the area of Jebel Dosha-Wawa, the traditional frontier with their Sikoot Nubian neighbours to the north. New survey work here seemed especially appropriate as most of Nubia further north had been studied during a series of archaeological surveys begun in the early 1900s with the construction of the first Aswan Dam, culminating in the international Nubian Salvage campaigns of the 1960s, in response to the construction of the Aswan High Dam. By the 1970s most of Lower Nubia had disappeared beneath the waters of Lake Nubia/Nasser behind the Aswan Dam and its inhabitants relocated. The Mahas area represents the last relatively unexplored area of Nubia north of the Third Cataract which has escaped flooding.
