CBS James Street was awarded a full time guidance position under the guidance enhancement initiative. The broad objectives of the proposal submitted by the school were to focus on Junior Cycle students (especially those at risk of leaving before Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate) and to build on existing links with Business in the Community,' local Partnerships, Access Programmes to third level institutions and scholarship provision.
The school lies in the heart of inner city Dublin and has all the attendant problems of such an area- high unemployment, poor housing conditions, no sporting facilities, serious vandalism, students orphaned due to AIDS and drug abuse, and a high dropout rate - 30% approximately of students who started in 1996 did not sit the Leaving Certificate in 2001. Approximately three students continued to third level. Most of the students' parents, who come from the surrounding flat complexes (Fatima Mansions, Teresa's Gardens, St. Michael's Estate) were also early school leavers and have a negative attitude to education while those with a more positive attitude have very low expectations. Many of the students are seriously unmotivated and have very poor self-esteem as a consequence of their socio-economic background.

    Suicide in Youth
Carol Watkins, MD According to the Surgeon General, a youth commits suicide every two hours in our country. In 1997, more adolescents died from suicide than AIDS, cancer, heart disease, birth defects and lung disease. Suicide claims more adolescents than any disease or natural cause. Adolescents now commit suicide at a higher rate than the national average of all ages. The rate of adolescent suicide in adolescent males has tripled between 1960 and 1980. Suicide rates for adolescent females have increased between two to three fold. There have been striking increases in suicidal behaviors among African American males, Native American males and children under 14. Much of the increase can be accounted for by deaths due to guns.

It is presented in four, target audience, interactive CD-ROM modules. The incidence of suicide among adolescents has created an urgent need for additional understanding, intervention, and support in schools. In addition, greater than 50% of the violent deaths which have occurred in schools have been inflicted by youth who themselves have been suicidal. The relationship between suicide and violent deaths in schools has clearly been demonstrated. The contents of the Suicide Prevention and Education Program modules are presented below. Module 1: The Buck Stops Here (for Administrators) – Supports Administrators with a comprehensive suicide prevention and education program highlighting their roles in the vital development and training areas, and leadership in suicide prevention, intervention, the crisis, the crisis management team, and in post crisis closure strategies. Strengthening School Guidance Programs
in Missouri for the 21st Century The Need

As we enter the 21st century, the United States and the state of Missouri continue to undergo substantial changes industrially, occupationally, socially and economically. These changes are creating substantial challenges for students in Missouri. A rapidly changing work world and labor force; violence in homes, schools and communities; divorce; teenage suicide; substance abuse; and sexual experimentation are just a few examples of these challenges. These challenges are real and they are having substantial impact on the personal/social, career and academic development of students. A Response
Comprehensive school guidance programs in Missouri, implemented by certified, professional school counselors, in collaboration with parents, teachers and administrators, are effective in assisting students to respond to these and similar challenges. Empirical research conducted in the state of Missouri during the past five years has shown that when certified, professional school counselors have the time, the resources and the structure of a comprehensive guidance program to work in, they contribute to positive student academic and career development as well as the development of positive and safe learning climates in schools. * Students (22,964) in 236 small, medium and large size high schools in Missouri with more fully implemented guidance programs as judged by school counselors reported that:

    Suicide Prevention
The suicide rate for adolescents has more than doubled since the 1960s. So the challenge for parents and educators is to be able to tell the difference between normal teen mood swings and clinical despair. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says the "suicide rate is six times higher among males than females, ages 15 to 19 years, with Native American males having the highest suicide rate." The AAP also pointed out that "firearms were used in 67% of all adolescent suicides and are the leading cause of death by suicide." Time magazine (May 15, 2000) points out that males act very differnetly from females when it comes to suicide. Attempts are commn among girls, but completion is quite rare. "Boys are five time as likely to commit suicide, and they're much less likely to talk about it," says psychiatrist David Schaffer, president of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. "If a boy talks about suicide, that statistically carries a far higher risk of some tragedy occuring than when a girl does." There is this notion about depression and suicide, that if you ask or mention the subject, you're going to make it happen. Kay Jamison, professor of psychiatry at John Hopkins School of Medicine says, that quite the contrary is true. "Talking with a son or daughter about dark feelings will help assuage the sense of hopelessness the child may have."

    Youth Suicide Prevention
I grew up with a girl who was the envy of everyone. She was blessed with intelligence, beauty, a loving family and good friends. She had everything, but it wasn't enough to make her happy. She attempted to kill herself after a bout of deep depression but was unsuccessful. The doctor who tended to her told her family she was attention seeking. This was a grave error, because upon her release from hospital, she tried again and was successful. Her death sent shockwaves through the community and 3 years later so many people still ache from the pain of loss.
Youth suicide is a tragedy touching thousands of Australians every year, and by international standards the Australian rate of youth suicide is very high. So what can be done to prevent it? Research shows 80% of cases of young people who commit suicide have communicated suicidal thoughts and feelings prior to the suicidal act. Suicide can be prevented, and people helped, if the warning signs are recognised. Some signs of potential suicide are:
    Isolation from family and friends.
