The Robbie Kirkland Story "I may be gone, but I hope I'm not forgotten. Remember me." By Robbie Kirkland On Jan. 2, 1997, my darling 14-year-old son, Robbie Kirkland committed suicide after a 4-year struggle to accept and find peace with his homosexuality. Our family loved, supported, and accepted him but could not protect him from the rejection and harassment he experienced at his Catholic schools or his overall perception of how society and religion view homosexuality. Robbie, my only son, was a very special and loving person. He was kind and sensitive with a witty sense of humor. He loved writing and had dreams of being a writer. At an early age Robbie was teased and harassed because he was noticeably different from the other boys. Robbie was soft spoken, gentle, creative, and disliked sports. Robbie made many efforts to fit in with the other boys such as participating in sports and pretending to have crushes on girls. It wasn't enough. He was still perceived as gay and encountered teasing and harassment, usually out of the teacher's view. Over a period of time, the effects of homophobia, he encountered at school, left him feeling ashamed, isolated, and insecure. He was not happy to be gay, knowing how much his Catholic schoolmates, society, and the Catholic doctrine rejected homosexuality. Once again we reassured him of our love, support, and acceptance. We, of course, canceled our AOL account.

by Deborah Matthews, Ph.D. The Child Guidance Center's Community Emergency Response Program was mobilized last October when Darien High School officials called following the suicide of a student at the school. While we deal with suicidal risk on a daily basis at the Child Guidance Center, this tragedy brought home for everyone in the community the importance of identifying and helping kids before feelings of hopelessness and despair become overwhelming for them. It can be very difficult to judge the seriousness of a situation. The important thing is to try to listen, be alert to possible warning signs, and, if you are concerned that a child may be at risk, error on the side of caution! You can call the Child Guidance Center for emergency consultation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 203 323-9797. Dr. Deborah Matthews, an expert on teen suicide, was appointed Director of Crisis Services and Clinical Administration at the Child Guidance Center in October 1999. Dr. Matthews came to the Center in 1996 as a staff psychologist. She received her B.S. in Human Development and Family Studies from Cornell University and her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Fordham University

Congressional attention to the mental health needs of children and adolescents has continued to increase significantly over the past year.  The heightened focus is due in large measure to departing U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher A number of recent legislative initiatives in Congress reflect the increased awareness of mental health issues.  Unfortunately there is still not clear recognition that schools are a natural context in which to provide effective prevention and intervention services for children and youth.  It is imperative that school psychologists communicate to Congress the benefits of school-based mental health services and the resources that are necessary to make them accessible and appropriate for all youngsters.
Youth Suicide Prevention
Suicide is among the ten leading causes of death worldwide each year and is one the top five causes among 15-19 year olds (World Health Organization (WHO), 2001). Indeed, more teenagers and young adults die from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease

NH State Department of Education Did you know that New Hampshire has State Rules that support Guidance Counselors and provide direction for Guidance Programs? Developing School Rules for Public Education is a long and arduous process that involves input from experts at the State Department of Education, opportunities for public review and comment, and ultimately, approval by the State Board of Education and review by the Joint Administrative Rules Committee of the Legislature. New Hampshire’s School Rules have the force of law, and are used for school approval. Many Guidance Directors and Administrators consult the School Rules as a guide when making tough decisions. Local administrators and school boards are acquainted with these Rules, and also refer to them in decision-making. While the School Rules specific to Guidance Counseling are relatively few, they cover very important issues that have an impact on your school’s Guidance Program. These include Guidance Counselor caseload maximums, the scope and priorities of a Guidance Program Plan, and Professional Development. New Hampshire School Rules also cover the scope and content of Career Education. While this Rule is not the exclusive responsibility of the Guidance Program in a school (it states clearly that Career Education is a whole-curriculum responsibility), the Career Guidance component of a Guidance Program is strongly supported by this Rule.

6001 Union Mill Road Clifton, VA 20124 Teacher Handbook - Crisis Plan August 2001 A plan for dealing with a crisis in the school is essential for the safety and welfare of every person in the building. The following statements serve as a guideline in case of an emergency situation at Centreville High School. Code Blue - Should an administrator speak over the P.A. system and announce "Code Blue is in effect," then all students should remain in class. Teachers without students assigned to them should report to the atrium and balcony areas on each floor. Any suspicious activity that is observed from a window or classroom area should be reported to the administrator for that floor. Students will remain in class until an announcement is made that "Code Blue is over." During a Code Blue situation an announcement may or may not be made depending on the circumstance of the incident.

Credit Card Guidance CREDIT CARD COMPANIES AIM MARKETING AT YOUNG CUSTOMERS
By Carol Frey,
Long before Alan Broughton got his high school diploma, he got a Capital One Visa card.Like many of his classmates at Raleigh's Sanderson High School, Broughton had received two or three credit-card offers before his 18th birthday last October.
"Since I turned 18, I get them all the time," he said.
Parents, consumer advocates and now some members of Congress are expressing alarm at what they see as a take-no-prisoners marketing of credit cards to younger and younger teens.
One prime example is Capital One of Falls Church, Va., among the largest credit-card companies in the world. Capital One began a full-scale sales effort aimed at students 16 to 18 last summer.
And in April, a survey of 2,044 students nationally found that 12 percent of those 12 to 19 have and use credit cards in their own names.
For teenagers who see gold in that plastic, credit-card debt can become a lead weight that scares away future employers and lenders.

Gysbers, Norman C.
In the 21st century, the United States will continue to undergo substantial changes in its occupational, social, and economic structures. Occupational and industrial specialization will increase dramatically. Increasing company size and complexity will be the rule rather than the exception, making the transition from school to work, and from work to further education and back to work again, more complex and difficult. content organizational framework , and resources content of the program identifies guidance competencies considered important by a school district for students to master as a result of their participation in the district’s comprehensive guidance program. Competencies are often organized around areas or domains, such as career, educational, and personal-social. The organizational framework contains structural components and program components. The structural components define the guidance program, provide a rationale for it, and list basic assumptions that undergird the program. The program components identify the four parts of the delivery system that organize the program’s guidance activities and interventions. The program components are guidance curriculum, individual planning, responsive services, and system support.

Surveying the Damage: Consequences of College Student Alcohol Abuse Consumption
College students who use alcohol excessively experience numerous harmful consequences. However, the literature on the epidemiology of those consequences is of mixed quality. It is typically based on self-report methodology and is not as comprehensive or complete as might be wished. Evidence suggests that there is only a modest correlation between college students’ self-perception of having a drinking problem and the many negative consequences of drinking that they report (Perkins, 2002).
Damage to Self
Students who engage in risky drinking may experience blackouts (i.e., memory loss during periods of heavy drinking); fatal and nonfatal injuries, including falls, drownings, and automobile crashes; illnesses; missed classes; unprotected sex that could lead to a sexually transmitted disease or an unwanted pregnancy; falling grades and academic failure; an arrest record; accidental death; and death by suicide. In addition, college students who drink to excess may miss opportunities to participate in the social, athletic, and cultural activities that are part of college life.

School counselors congregate to back bill
By LYNN OKAMOTO
Register Staff Writer
Nearly 100 school counselors came to the Iowa Capitol on Tuesday in support of a bill that would require every school district to have a guidance counselor and media specialist. "We feel like it is simply a matter of the state saying, "This is part of a quality education," " said John Davis, a guidance counselor at Shenandoah High School. Twenty Democrats are sponsoring House File 58, which would reinstate a requirement that was removed from state law nine years ago.

Volume 3, No. 1-Spring/Summer '98 Helping the grieving child in school
By Linda Goldman, Certified Grief Therapist and Grief Educator
Center for Loss and Grief Therapy Educators and students can exist in a more healthy living and learning environment by acknowledging the special needs of the grieving child. Foremost is the complex relationship between loss issues and a child's ability to function in and out of the classroom. The needs of the grieving child must be addressed in a new and fresh way within our school systems to create a safe haven for learning for our young people. Grief in the 'nineties
Children's grief should be seen as an ongoing life process that is approachable through words, activities and non-verbal communication. Educators can use this understanding to create a safe environment for parents, teachers and children to acknowledge and process difficult feelings. So often adults rely on the prevailing myth that children are too young too grieve. When a child is capable of loving, he is capable of grieving. Yet many of today's children are born into a world of grief issues that await them inside their homes and outside their neighborhoods. Boys and girls are becoming increasingly traumatized by these prevailing social and societal loss issues in their homes, in their schools and in their communities. A major percentage of America's children face the loss of the protection of the adult world, as grief issues of homicide violence and abuse infiltrate their outer and inner worlds. Issues involving shame and secretiveness when death is caused by such occurrences as suicide and the contraction of AIDS create a grieving child that is locked into the pain of isolation - which can be far more damaging than the original loss.

The effect of suicide on others. Suicide is a very touchy topic and makes a good number of people uncomfortable to discuss. Death is something that is difficult to deal with, especially for young people. They are just growing up and learning to cope with the real world and then, tragically, some of them have to cope with something as horrible as a suicide. What are some ways that young people can help get support? Ways other than counseling? Would a celebration of the person who has passed on help? How might it keep them from healing? Just some things to think about as we proceed to the Forum, which is only days away. Reply Re: Suicide Response...
