  • Overview .The Maine Youth Suicide Prevention Program is built upon a comprehensive set of strategies recommended by the office of the Surgeon General. The program is a collaborative effort among state and private sector agencies and individuals.
      Increase public awareness that suicide is preventable; Provide suicide prevention training to educators, public safety personnel, clinicians, clergy, health care providers, and others who are in close contact with youth; Disseminate data and information resources statewide; Provide guidance for various agencies and groups on effective suicide prevention methods and practices.
    Accomplishments;
      1,040 Gatekeepers trained; 64 Substance Abuse Clinicians trained; Over 300 DMHMRSAS Mental Health Clinicians trained; 80 DHS clinicians trained; Web site and printed informational materials designed and distributed; Statewide crisis hotline established; 10 School systems implementing Reconnecting Youth curriculum; 2 videos developed and disseminated.

    Who Needs College Counseling, and Why?
    Many, or even most, students will find a good college solution on their own, or with the help of family and school guidance counselors. There are special situations, however, in which the use of a skilled, professional, college counselor can be particularly beneficial. When Applying to Very Selective Schools. "Brand name" schools, typically the ones that populate most "top 25" listings, are increasingly difficult to gain admission to. Just this year, for example, Princeton's applications rose to 14,287 for just 1,165 slots; they accepted only 11.7%, a new low. Harvard accepted even fewer, 10.7%. Since 1993, Columbia's applications have risen 97% - the school accepted 13.6% last year. Penn and Cornell also saw increased applications last year. Statistics like this mean that for every eight or nine applicants, only one gets admitted! It's important to realize that the students in the reject pile are often as qualified statistically as the small number of successful applicants - the difference often lies in activities, interests, enthusiasm, and "intangibles." Communicating these personal characteristics effectively is critical to success. At the most selective schools, almost no applicant is assured of admission. Harvard rejects half of its valedictorian applicants. Many top schools routinely reject applicants with perfect SAT scores. Clearly, even a student with the most sterling qualifications has no room for error in the application process - an experienced counselor can avoid missteps and help present the student's unique accomplishments and abilities in the best possible way.

    But for good friends Kathy Poole and Nayo Watkins, this popular view is dead wrong. Five years ago, Poole's 15-year-old son, Torian Graves, shot himself to death at their Durham home. Two years later, Watkins' 16-year-old son, Mekye Malcolm, hung himself from a tree on the campus of the Carolina Friends School in Chapel Hill. "The black community thinks of itself in a certain way," says Watkins, relaxing on a sofa across from Poole in the latter's den. A large quilt adorned with pictures and items of clothing worn by Poole's late son drapes the wall behind them. Watkins, an arts consultant and freelance writer, believes that African Americans have been imbued with a will to survive in the face of great suffering. This collective show of strength, she says, often prevents blacks from knowing how to talk about suicide. "We are trying to get people to talk about it," says Watkins, "to recognize it as a major problem in our community, and to look out for each other." Historically a group with a relatively low incidence of suicide, recent data on suicide rates for black youth point to a growing problem. According to a study by the Centers for Disease Control, the suicide rate among blacks in the United States aged 10 to 19 more than doubled between 1980 and 1995, and for the 10 to 14 age group the rate had tripled. By 1995, suicide had become the third leading cause of death among blacks aged 15 to 19. Although the CDC does not provide figures for North Carolina, it does report that, during the same 15-year period, the largest increase in suicide rates among black youth occurred in the South.

    Gaylene was 14 when she became pregnant. Too embarrassed to go directly to her parents, she turned to her high school guidance counselor for advice. She writes: [The school counselor] was sympathetic and understanding. He felt there was no need to worry my family. He also explained about having a child, how tough it would be on me and that I wouldn't be able to do what I wanted to do. He said that the child would suffer because I was much too young to be a parent. He pointed out that the best thing for me to do was to abort the fetus at this stage so no one would be hurt. No mention was made of talking to my parents about this or carrying the baby to term. He indicated that adoption would be difficult and not an option for me. . . . I felt as though I had no control over what was happening to me. I started to question what I was doing, but in my logic I'd refer back to what the counselor had told me, and then I would think he was right. But still today, I feel like I did not decide to have the abortion. Gaylene's traumatic reaction to her abortion experience included suicide attempts, alcoholism, drugs, crime, involvement in a cult and a major break with her family.

    5. Schools
    5.1 Background The issues and opportunities for schools were explored from two main angles: the pastoral role of schools, accessed through the guidance function and the functions of New Community Schools in promoting health and well being by working in partnership. Inevitably this represented only a limited range of the possible gamut of experiences and views that exist within the school system. However, the discussions did afford valuable insights into some of the work that is currently underway in schools which was directly related to the promotion of mental health and well being in young people (sometimes also in their families and communities) and more indirectly related to the reduction of suicide and self harm. 5.2 Impetus to address emotional and mental health The programmes of work undertaken were varied and innovative.     Developed by Barbara Ritchen, Director Child, Adolescent and School Health Section Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Preface: Because the three leading causes of death for adolescents in Colorado are all preventableunintentional injuries (mostly motor vehicle) , suicide, and homicidethe system of health care/benefit package must be designed to address these and related risk behaviors. Recommendations: I. Provide benefit package in accordance with established standards of care (American Medical Association's Guidelines for Adolescent Preventive Services -"GAPS," the Maternal and Child Health Bureau's Bright Futures, or the American Academy of Pediatrics Putting Prevention into Practice ) and include the following; A.     In addition to supporting students' academic needs, the Student Services Department promotes the overall well being of SRHS students. Counselors are here to address the concerns of students, and, when necessary, connect them with the outside resources they may need. There are also programs in place within the school to aid students with problems they may encounter. Mrs. Goode´s Peer Mediation Program, detailed below, allows students to resolve conflicts with other students on mutually agreed upon terms. Peer Mediation Program The Peer Mediation Program at Southeast Raleigh High School is designed to train students as mediators who will help their peers settle conflicts. The mediators are taught a step-by-step process to assist other students in negotiating disputes and finding resolutions in a non-violent manner. The peer mediator learns different types of communications skills throughout the process. The mediator's role is proactive and the goal is to create a win/win situation. The peer mediators are facilitators who do not take sides, give advice or assume responsibility for solving the dispute. They are trained only to assist those in conflict to solve their problems. Mattie Goode, the counselor in the Student Assistance Program, is conducting ongoing training for the Peer Mediation Program. The format and ideas are from the program guide by Schrumpf, Crawford, and Usadel which uses the approach that peer mediation redefines conflicts in such a way that no one has to lost. It is a commitment to cooperate and create new possibilities beneficial to all involved.     HOW COUNSELORS CAN HELP
    Schools are being challenged to integrate these new basic skills across their curricula. This presents school counselors with an opportunity: if they can prove their effectiveness in helping students plan for and acquire the basic skills and prepare for life after high school, they can trade their traditionally services oriented, possibly expendable positions in schools for positions of influence in matters such as school reform and restructuring. Currently, the most promising models for helping school counselors take this active role are "comprehensive counseling and guidance programs."

    Assisted suicide laws around the world are clear in some nations but unclear - if they exist at all - in others. Just because a country has not defined its criminal code on this specific action does not mean all assisters will go free. It is a complicated state of affairs. For example, it is correct that Sweden has no law specifically proscribing assisted suicide. Instead the prosecutors might charge an assister with manslaughter - and do.     Introduction Located in a university town in Appalachian southeastern Ohio, the Athens City School District serves about 3,000 students. Three school counselors serve 1500 middle and high school students in the district, while 1500-plus elementary students in five buildings are supported by two school counselors. Four years ago the Athens City School District filled its part-time contract position of Safe, Drug-Free Schools Coordinator with a licensed school counselor. The district's Safe, Drug-Free Schools program had been inactive for a few years, and the purpose of the new position was to revive the program with research-based interventions. (Title IV of the Improving America's Schools Act of 1994, the Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act, funds the Federal government's main program for reducing drug, alcohol and tobacco use, and violence in schools.) We have used SDFS funds for classroom guidance resources and training, building a peer mediation program, crisis management training and support, and engaging families and the community.
