Scientists mixed with policy-makers, development experts, farmers, young people and representatives of civil society to address the most important and controversial issues surrounding the use of bio-sciences and their ability to offer sustainable solutions for food production and the alleviation poverty. Read the full conference programme A question and answer session moderated by Alex Puissant brought proceeding to a close. This proved to be a dynamic session as panellists and delegates debated issues such as the safety and use of GMOs, the need to place science in a broader development context, and the value of ensuring that developing-world farmers are part of the collaborative process of research. Mobilising resources Responding to such a challenge requires the mobilisation of human and financial resources. At the same time, the current and future progress of life sciences and biotechnologies represents an undeniable potential for facilitating sustainable agriculture in developing countries, in particular where they allow these countries to unshackle themselves from more invasive mechanical and chemical methods.

84. GSC Sustainable Agriculture Project In Tanzania
Project by Global Service Corps (GSC), to develop sustainable farming in the Eastern Province.

Tanzania Sustainable Agriculture Program
The GSC sustainable agriculture program offers participants opportunities to learn about organic farming methods while living with local families . Participants work with Tanzanian community groups and non-governmental organizations to initiate small-scale organic agriculture projects in the Arusha region. Global Service Corps initiated its village-based programs in 1994 in Kenya, teaching biointensive agriculture to community members. Over the course of three years, GSC assisted in the initiation of over 2000 community garden plots as well as a community demonstration plot and training center. GSC then replicated this highly successful program in Machakos (in Kenya's Eastern Province). GSC moved its East Africa Program to Tanzania in 2001. Volunteers apply the Kenyan model to Tanzania by first learning, then educating community members about sustainable small-scale farming. Volunteers and community members then work together to create organic farming plots. Sustainable Agriculture Program participants work in collaboration with the GSC Tanzania HIV/AIDS Program participants to educate HIV/AIDS victims, their families and orphans about organic small-scale farming. They create organic mini-farms to benefit these members of the community as an environmentally sustainable source of immune system-building fruits and vegetables and a viable source of income. GSC promotes biointensive agriculture (BIA), a specialized form of organic agriculture involving the use of double-dug beds, locally available crops, organic compost materials, crop diversification, intensive planting, and water harvesting. Biointensive agriculture is a much more viable option for small-scale farmers than is large-scale farming, which requires expensive chemicals, fertilizers and machinery.

sustainable agriculture
Today's industrial agriculture produces a bountiful harvest enough food for our country and for export abroad as well. But agriculture's dependence on chemical pesticides and fertilizers is also producing damaged soil, depleted groundwater and polluted rivers.
UCS promotes another vision of agriculture one that views agriculture as a system working in harmony with the environment while continuing to be highly productive. This kind of agriculture would be sustainable far into the future.
Sustainable agriculture is holistic: it treats the farm as an integrated whole composed of elements like soil, plants, animals, and insects whose interaction can be adjusted and enriched to solve problems and maximize yields.
Sustainable agriculture is also scientific: it relies on knowledge about the elements of the system and their interaction to achieve its results. It is a powerful approach that can produce high yields and profits for farmers.
UCS is working to transform government policies so that they support sustainable agriculture as they have long supported industrial agriculture.
These policies will need to include subsidy programs to help farmers through a transition to sustainable agriculture and the occasional crop failure, research to understand the interactions among all elements of farming and to produce appropriate new technologies, and extension services to update farmers about new developments in science and technology.

Background
Alberta's agricultural production and processing industry has made important progress in environmental stewardship over the last decade. Locally driven activities have included pesticide container collection programs and storage standards, and a broad-based partnership on direct seeding. Technology transfer programs to educate producers about how to protect surface water from livestock grazing and manure runoff have also moved the industry forward. Agricultural processors have initiated projects to improve the quality of waste water and reduce the amount of packaging. Many projects received support through Previous Canada-Alberta Environmental Initiatives Industry and environmental organizations in Alberta agree there is a need to continue to improve and expand efforts to protect Alberta's environment from impacts by the agricultural production and processing industry. There is an ongoing need to ensure that the industry has the best science and information available to reduce environmental impacts. Comprehensive, multi-stakeholder consultations were held in 1996 to determine priority areas for environmentally sustainable agriculture activities in Alberta. The following priorities were identified:

"A sustainable agriculture must provide a fair and reasonably secure living for farm families; it should benefit rather than harm the natural environment and must at least maintain basic natural resources such as healthy soil, clean water, and clean air; and it should support viable rural communities and fair treatment of all involved in the food system, from farm workers to consumers."

SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE For the last 50 years agricultural production has been criticized for exploiting natural resources faster than they can be renewed. At the same time world population is expected to see continued increases in the coming years, especially in developing countries, driving a dramatic rise in the demand for food. In the last decade food safety crises, revelations of unethical working conditions for farmers, increasing attention to symptoms of imbalance such as pollution and decline of biodiversity have dramatically demonstrated the needs for a sustainable approach to agriculture. The issue spectrum of Sustainable Agriculture is very broad and variable depending on the agricultural / society system considered. Just think about the priority disparities of an affluent consumer asking for low calorie food and the needs of a subsistence farmer. However the facts cannot be ignored that an increasing population will need to be fed from a relatively decreasing farmland.
