Underwater Sports - Fin Swimming Some very basic rules apply for the surface events: one part of the swimmer, including his or her snorkel, must be at the surface at all times. However, athletes may swim completely submerged for up to 15 meters after turning at each end of the pool. T he governing rules for fin swimming are authored by the World Underwater Federation - CMAS. Clicking on the fin swimming pictogram takes you to the site of CMAS!

In the first modern games in , the event was held in the Bay of Phaleron where the water was choppy and its temperature hovered around 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Four years later in Paris the event was held outdoors again, this time in the Seine River. Did You Know? The water temperature in the pool is kept between 77-81 degrees Fahrenheit for the swimming competition. No longer an outdoor sport, the pool has been moved inside and its water temperature regulated. The pool in Sydney is 50m long and is split into 10 lanes (although the two outside lanes are not used). For races longer than 50m, laps, or legs as they are sometimes called, must be done. The lanes are numbered 1-8 starting from the right on the finishing end.

Some of the most famous sporting names in the nation’s history are swimmers. Murray Rose, Andrew "Boy" Charlton, Fanny Durack, Shane Gould and John Konrads set the standard now being met, and even exceeded, by contemporary heroes like Kieren Perkins, Susie O’Neill, Michael Klim, Grant Hackett and the amazing Ian Thorpe. And then there’s Dawn Fraser, the female swimmer of the century and one of the greatest sporting talents Australia has ever produced. In a career spanning the 1956, ’60 and ’64 Games, Fraser set 39 world records.

    Associated Press
BRISBANE, Australia A swimming event between Australia and the United States in Indianapolis next month might be called off if a war with Iraq breaks out. On Monday, high performance director Greg Hodge said he would meet with Olympic security advisers Thursday to discuss the issue. He also said Australian Swimming would take advice from the department of foreign affairs and trade. ''We've also had discussions with U.S. Swimming about this,'' Hodge said. ''We are conscious of the fact that if war breaks out there may be some implications for us. ''We'll take advice and we'll act responsibly on the basis of that advice.'' Members of the Australian team are scheduled to fly to Indianapolis after the national swimming championships next week in Sydney for the April 6 meet. The meet involving the two top swimming nations in the world is sold out and was due to be televised in both countries.
