Olympic gold medalist Misty Hyman named as Stanford's top athlete
Swimmer earns Al Masters Award during annual awards luncheon The Stanford University Athletic Board honored 36 of the university's top student-athletes at its annual awards luncheon last week. The luncheon was highlighted by senior women's swimmer and 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist Misty Hyman receiving the board's highest honor - The Al Masters Award for attaining the highest standards of athletic performance, leadership and academic achievement. Hyman pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the entire Sydney Olympics by winning the gold medal in the 200-meter butterfly. Collegiately, Hyman was a 12-time NCAA Champion, and became just the second swimmer in the history of the program to earn the maximum possible 28 All-American honors (Catherine Fox is the other). The International Relations major was also a 17-time Pac-10 Champion. The Donald Kennedy Award presented to the senior athlete(s) who best exhibits the combination of excellent academics, strong athletic ability and a commitment to community service was shared by Michelle Scott (Field Hockey) and Hilary Homeyer (Women's Golf). Scott, who was named the 2000 Nor-Pac Conference Player of the year, has been accepted to serve in the Peace Corps for the next two years in Africa. She has also volunteered with Kids For Cancer, Amnesty International, U.S. Veterans Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House. She is a Human Biology major with a 3.59 grade point average. Homeyer is a four-time All-American and represented the United States at the 2000 World Amateur Championships. She was a District VIII Academic All-American this season, and is both an Economics and Psychology major with a 3.82 grade point average.

History of Synchronised Swimming
MEN WERE FIRST WITH NOSE CLIP AND SYNCHRONICITY
The haunt of nose clips, glitter, hair gel, make-up, beaming smiles and legs worthy of the catwalk, synchronised swimming, for women only, has endured much taunting and teasing over the years. Yet the protagonists are capable of holding their breath while performing their sport for long periods of time and count themselves among those at the Games with the most efficient cardio-vascular systems. Now confined to the fairer sex, synchronised swimming began with men in the 19th century, when it was known by various names including water ballet, figure swimming and ornamental swimming. Male actors staged the first recorded synchronised swimming contest in Berlin in 1891. Anette Kellerman, an Australian swimmer, stole the men's thunder, however, when she performed in a glass tank in New York in 1907. Ever since, synchro has been synonymous with women. The sport had to wait until the 1920s and 1930s before truly taking off. The world's first provincial artistic swimming championship was held in Montreal in 1924, with Peg Seller its first champion. From there, the movement spread to the US and an exhibition at the 1934 World Fair in Chicago helped to popularise it.

SPORTING CODES: SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING In the Olympic Games, swimming, diving, synchronised swimming and water polo are all categorised within the overall discipline of swimming.
Unusual, but vital, equipment helps the women maintain the illusion of effortlessness, no simple task considering they perform strenuous movements upside down and underwater while holding their breath. A nose clip prevents water from entering the nose, allowing the swimmers to remain underwater for long periods. Gelatin keeps the hair in place. Make-up brings out the features. Most importantly, an underwater speaker lets the swimmers hear the music clearly while underwater, helping them achieve the split-second timing critical to synchronized swimming.

THE SPORTS History of Swimming
Content by Andrew Oon The English are considered the first modern society to develop swimming as a sport. By 1837, regular swimming competitions were being held in London's six artificial pools, organized by the National Swimming Society in England. As the sport grew in popularity many more pools were built, and when a new governing body, the Amateur Swimming Association of Great Britain, was organized in 1880, it numbered more than 300 member clubs. In 1896, swimming became an Olympic sport for men with the 100 metres and 1500 metres freestyle competitions held in open water. Soon after, as swimming gained popularity, more freestyle events were added, followed by the backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and finally, the individual medley. Stroke Development
Although people have swum since ancient times, swimming strokes have been greatly refined in the past 100 years. Competitive swimming, most notably the modern Olympic Games, begun in Athens, Greece, in 1896 increased interest in strokes. Scientific stroke analysis has helped produce more varied strokes, greater speeds, and a better understanding of propulsion through the water. Competitive Swimming
As swimmers refine strokes or make changes, the best way to see if the new stroke is an improvement is to use it in competition. This is why so much attention is paid to speed and endurance records.

Ni springs into history
Xiong Ni, who swapped his trunks for life in the business world, came back to defend his Olympic springboard title Tuesday, giving China its first diving gold of the Sydney games. American upsets china
Facing her most troublesome dive from 33 feet above the water, Laura Wilkinson ignored the pain and remembered an old friend. She hurled herself off the platform, creating barely a ripple as her wisp of a body sliced through the water to cap an inspiring comeback over tragedy, injury and the Chinese.
