SWIMMING SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING The great Australian swimmer, Annette Kellerman, planted the first seed of what was to become synchronized swimming when she performed "water ballet" in a glass tank at the New York Hippodrome in 1907. Katherine "Kay" Curtis didn't see the performance, but she may well have been inspired by newspaper accounts. As a student at the University of Wisconsin in 1915, Curtis began experimenting with underwater swimming stunts. The following year, she was instrumental in having synchronized swimming added to the school's physical education program for women. Curtis moved on to the University of Chicago, where she founded a water ballet club in 1923. Sixty of her swimmers, known as the "Modern Mermaids," performed at the 1934 Century of Progress World's Fair in Chicago, attracting national and international publicity. The sport quickly became popular among young women in the Chicago area and Curtis developed rules for competition, based essentially on the scoring methods used in gymnastics, diving, and figure skating.

Thursday, 24 August, 2000, 18:13 GMT 19:13 UK Are there too many Olympic Sports?
With triathlon, Tae-Kwon-Do and synchronised diving becoming Olympic sports, has the time come to say enough is enough? Or should we welcome such decisions and say the more the merrier?
Olympic purists are bemoaning the fact that 'spurious' sports are entering the arena. Are pastimes being confused as genuine Olympic Sports? With darts and ballroom dancing being touted as possible Olympic contenders, do you feel the Modern Games will self-destruct? Do you welcome these moves to make the Modern Games more open to 'lesser' sports or do you feel that more sports should not be included? This Sports Talk has now been archived and will not be updated.
It's about time Tae-kwon-Do was in the Olympic line up, it is practised by over 30 million people! Hardly a minor sport!
Carter, UK The Olympics is the finest sporting event in the world. It is so because it gives exposure to the lesser-known events. I believe that it is sports such as shooting and tae kwon do that make it great. It gives exposure to some of the finest athletes in the world, who would otherwise remain anonymous. I say get rid of football, tennis and the other sports for which there are other, larger, prizes. The Olympics should support the lesser known (but not less popular) sports.

Help Pass the Olympic Sports Revitalization Act The gymnastics community is a closely knit web of coaches, judges, gymnasts and parents that always pull together when really needed. That's what needs to happen now, but we're also going to need some help. What we need to do to really get this bill some attention is to get support from all the sports that will be covered in the bill. By passing the the OSR Act the following sports would receive immediate finanical and legal benefits: wrestling, tennis, gymnastics, rifle/shooting, fencing, outdoor track, swimming, skiing, ice hockey, water polo, judo, field hockey, team handball, synchronized swimming, equestrian, badminton and archery. We all need to do our part to involve anyone we know that is involved with these sports. The more help we get the faster the government will be forced to act. I have already emailed my representatives and all of the senators that are in a position to help with the bill, but I have started a petition as well. SYDNEY 2000 EVENTS Synchronized Swimming The competition Synchronized swimming was originally an exhibition sport at the Olympic Games from 1948 to 1968, but became a full medal sport in Los Angeles in 1984. It is open only to women, with medals offered in two events in the Sydney 2000 Games - duet and team. Competition for both events consists of a technical routine and a free routine, each performed to music within a time limit. In the technical routine, swimmers perform specific moves in a set order, including boosts, rockets, thrusts and twirls. In the free routine there are no restrictions on music or choreography. Judges of each routine look for a high degree of difficulty and risk, flawless execution, innovative choreography and seemingly effortless performance.

Formerly called "hitting," boxing is also known as the "sweet science" because all boxers love pretty flowers and are required to complete a master's degree in biology, physics or chemistry. This year's competition should prove interesting because the Cuban team has evolved the ability to spit venom.
Whoever says girls can’t play sports has never seen synchronized swimming. Or, more likely, they have. Synchronized swimming, also called "water ballet "or "bathroom break," is a demanding test of endurance, flexibility, breath control and waterproof makeup. Synchronized swimming graduated to medal status in 1984, perhaps due to bureaucratic error—we’re still looking into it. Competition consists of a technical routine, a free routine and a dance-off just like at the end of the "Beat It" video, only wetter.
It is always awe-inspiring to see the world's best stick-throwers gathered together in one place. Throwing sticks is much more complicated than many people think, and much less complicated than other people think, and exactly as complicated as a small minority of people think. Clearly, the IOC's Javelin Complexity Awareness program is failing.

Did you know…? Until the 1900s, Australia and Great Britain dominated most international swim competitions. Archeologists have uncovered evidence that swimming was practiced as early as 2500 BC. South Pacific Islanders taught swimming to their children as soon as they were able to walk. The Sydney Olympics served as a debut for Olympic synchronized diving. Men's diving first appeared at the 1904 Olympics and only included platform diving. Springboard diving debuted four years later. Australian swimmer Annette Kellerman introduced the concept of synchronized swimming in 1907 when she performed water ballet in a glass tank in New York. SWIMMING/SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING/DIVING
Swimming and diving, part of the original slate of sports at the Athens Olympics in 1896, have endured as some of the most popular events throughout the Games' history. Synchronized swimming, a relative newcomer to medal sports, attracts new fans by combining athletic ability with the elegance of ballet. What do these sports share besides an abundance of water? An abundance of plastics.

OLYMPIC COACH . . . While the Stanford synchronized swim team lost the coach who guided the school to its first-ever national championship in the sport, a highly visable replacement has been found. Gail Emery, who has served as the head coach of the U.S. Olympic Synchronized Swimming team in each of the last three Summer Olympics, has been named as the new head at Stanford. Emery replaces Vicky Weir, who retired in July after a 20-year run at Stanford, which included a national title in the spring of 1998. "We're thrilled to have another Olympic coach on our pool deck," said Cheryl Levick, Stanford's Senior Associate Athletic Director. "Gail is the perfect person to help our synchronized swimming program build on the success it had under Vicky." Emery joins an aquatics program that includes women's swim coach Richard Quick and men's swim coach Skip Kenney, both USA Olympic head swim coaches at the 1996 Summer Games. Emery, who was inducted into the U.S. Synchronized Swimming Hall of Fame in 1985 and the Women's Sports Foundation International Hall of Fame in 1997, is a nine-time U.S. Synchronized Swimming Coach of the Year. She helped found the U.S. Synchronized Swimming National Team program in 1979, and has been a national coach ever since. Emery also founded the Walnut Creek Aquanauts in 1968, and served as their head coach until taking the job at Stanford. Natthalie Bartleson has been named as Emery's assistant coach.
