September Jan-Ove Waldner is close to 35 years old, a vintage age for a table tennis player, and he hasn't been ranked No1 in the world for almost three years, yet the indications are he will again be the sport's big-name player at the Olympics. Swede's presence a perfect delight For an idea of why China could sweep table tennis gold at the Sydney Olympics , watch the wunderkids training in the echoey gymnasium of Beijing's East District Sports School. Aged between five and 12, they play like hardened competitors. Faces etched with concentration, they dart around the tables, deftly spinning and smashing returns with paddles that dwarf their small hands, across nets some can hardly see over.

The Beginnings of Table Tennis "Whiff-Waff" and "Ping Pong" were just two of a number of games patented in England during the 1890’s, and sold with simple rules. "Gossamer" was another early name for the game from which Table Tennis evolved. Early equipment consisted of rubber or cork balls, and bats made of dried animal skins stretched over a wooden frame. Table tennis has a short Olympic history, although worldwide it has been one of the most popular forms of family amusement, as well as an elite sport since the turn of the century. Making its debut at Olympic level in Seoul in 1988, table tennis has earned the reputation of being the fastest ball sport on earth. While there are more than 150 member countries at international level, the sport is dominated by Asian nations. In 1988 scandal surrounded the women's events, with both the Chinese and Korean teams rumored to have asked their players to "throw" some games. In the end Korea took the gold medal in the men's singles and women's doubles, while China won the other two golds on offer. Despite the serious nature of the allegations, crowds were enthralled by many spectacular games. This established a precedent that was repeated four years later in Barcelona.

Ananova: Olympic sport guide - Table Tennis A guide to the Olympic sport of Table Tennis. Technical details Players toss a coin to decide who will serve. The serve changes after every five serves. Points are scored by the player who wins each rally. The game is won by a player reaching 21 points, unless the game goes to 20 all, in which case the winning player must be two points clear. Matches are determined by the best of three sets. At the knock-out stage, it is the best of five sets. Over the years, there have been many changes to the bat. These have included: the sponge layers between the blade and rubber; use of different rubbers the same colour, which gave rise to players 'twiddling' the bat below the surface of the table and concealing the type of spin. Although 'twiddling' is now permitted at the Games, the bats have different coloured rubbers on each side. But they must be at least 85% natural wood. The latest advances is the use of fast glues, which remain wet, because they are used to fix the rubber and are designed to give greater speed. However, there is a ban on the most toxic glues being used. Tables measure 2.74m in length, 1.525m wide and 0.760m high. The table surface must be dark coloured and is usually blue or green. The net must be 15.25cm above the table. The ball is made of celluloid and weighs 2.5gm.

History of Table Tennis
For history of table tennis in a particular country, see the Country In Focus page. Table Tennis likely began as a social hobby in England toward the end of the 1800's. Dining-room tables and balls of cork made up some of the early equipment that was used. These early pioneers may have referred to their sport as gossima flim-flam , or ping-pong . Around the turn of the century, the game underwent a few changes in England. One person introduced a celluloid ball to the game, while another added pimpled rubber to the wooden paddle. The recreational game lost some of its popularity until various groups around Europe revived it as "table tennis" in the 1920s. The International Table Tennis Association (ITTF) was formed in 1926. The sport soon spread to Japan and other Asian nations. The Japanese dominated the sport for much of the 50s and 60s, however the Chinese soon closed the gap. China alone dominated the sport for much of the 60's and 70's, but after Table Tennis became an Olympic event in the 1980's, other nations such as Sweden and South Korea have joined the top ranks.

Have you watched the Olympics on TV or better yet been there to experience it live? Did you ever wondered why the Olympics started? I did! If you want to be on or go to the Olympics, I think you first need to know about it. Why did the games start? At the original Olympics what games did they play? Also what games do they play today? Now, get ready for the world of the Olympics.
Have you ever wondered how the Olympics started? In Olympia, Greece the Olympic Games were held every four years. First Olympic game was recorded in 776 BC; that was about 3,000 years ago. At that time this great festival took place to honor the Greek gods. Olympics were held during the great festival. My resources say Olympics were held to please the various gods. One God, in particular, the most important was called Zeus. The Olympics were called Olympiad in Greece.
Now we know where the games are held, but we dont know what games they played? In the first thirteen Olympic games, there was only one event and that was the sprint. The sprint event was about one hundred and eight meters in length. Then later Pentathlon was added and it had different events. There was discus, javelin, jumping, running, and wrestling. After a while, they added Equestrian events and that included chariot racing and riding. The Ancient Olympics did have lots of events. They had two major events Equestrian and Pentathlon events.

History The origin of table tennis has never been exactly pinpointed, even though it's a relatively young sport, younger than lawn tennis and not much older than basketball. The earliest known form of the sport, called indoor tennis, was played in the early 1880s by British army officers in India and South Africa, using lids from cigar boxes as paddles and rounded corks from wine bottles as balls, with a row of books set up across the middle of a table to form the net. Other versions developed in England during the 1890s, known variously as "whiff whaff" and "gossima," and Parker Brothers began manufacturing an indoor tennis kit that included a portable net that could be set up on a table, a small ball covered with netting, and miniature paddles. James Gibb, an Englishman who visited the United States in 1900, brought some hollow celluloid balls home and began playing indoor tennis with friends, using the new balls. Gibb apparently came up with the name "ping pong," representing the sounds of the ball hitting the paddle and then the table. However, an English manufacturer of sporting goods, John Jacques, registered "Ping Pong" as a trade name in 1901 and sold American rights to Parker Brothers, who came out with a new kit under that name.
