TABLE TENNIS: Olympic champions have mixed fortunes
(c) 1997 Agence France-Presse NIMES, France (Oct 23, 1997 - 20:40 EDT) - The last two Olympic champions had mixed fortunes here on Thursday on the opening day of the men's World Cup the most prestigious annual event in the table tennis calendar. Jan-Ove Waldner, the 1992 winner in Barcelona, had a lucky escape, to win his opening match, but there was no such joy for current Olympic winner Liu Guoliang of China. Waldner, the 1990 World Cup winner, lost in the first round of his last event, the China Open, to China's Feng Zhe last month and has not played since on the international scene. But current world champion Waldner came back from 16-19 down in the final set to beat Belgium's world number nine Jean Michel Saive 8-21, 21-13, 22-20. Waldner, whose variation of speed and spin has kept him at the top of the sport for nearly two decades, said afterward he was not playing as well as in May when he won his second world singles title in England. "It's not easy to play well all the time and I think my group is quite tough," he said, adding: "But at least I have a victory now and one more will see me into the quarterfinals."

Kafelnikov: Golden joy
The BBC's Iain Carter gives his verdict on golden duo Venus Williams and Yevgeny Kafelnikov. For the first time tennis sat at the top table at an Olympic Games - and it did not appear out of place. The magnificent New South Wales Tennis Centre is one of fourteen sporting venues at Sydney Olympic Park, and so for once the sport wasn't tucked away at some far flung site, instead it was to be found within eyeshot of the torch and at the very heart of the Games. For some, the presence of tennis in the Olympics will never sit easily, but try telling that to the 170 thousand fans who over the ten days of competition witnessed the unstoppable Venus Williams, the inspired Yevgeny Kafelnikov, the shock early defeats of Lleyton Hewitt and Pat Rafter and the career ending gold quest that ultimately resulted in doubles silver for the Woodies. To a player each and every competitor spoke of their pride at representing their country, of being an Olympian and the simple message to the likes of Pete Sampras, who failed to show up, was that it was their loss.

No five day Tests here, no playing for time, no boring emphasis on possession at the expence of offence - the expedite system has put such tactics in table tennis to the sword. The expedite system comes into force if a game is unfinished after 15 minutes, unless both players or pairs have scored 19 or more points. Otherwise, once that time is reached, the umpire interrupts the game - mid-rally if necessary - and introduces a new serving and scoring regime. Under the expedite system, each player or pair shall serve for one point in turn until the end of the game, but the real innovation is the onus on the server to attack - if the receiving player or pair can make 13 good returns, they win the point.

It's almost time for Olympic Fever. The kids will barely be back in school when from September 15 to October 1, 2000, most of us will be glued to our television sets, watching the games taking place in Sydney, Australia.
The 2000 Summer Olympic Competition events fall within the following categories:
  • Featured Competition: Modern Pentathlon
    Debut Sport: Trampoline
    Individual: Men Only
    Individual: Women Only
Team Events: Men Only Team Events: Women Only Team Events: Men and Women Equestrian Debut Sport: Triathlon Featured Competition: Rowing
  • Featured Competition: Modern Pentathlon This event isn't for slackers. It also helps if you're a morning person, too. Competition starts at 5:30 A.M. with a pistol shoot at a bull's-eye target 10 meters away. After that, there's the dueling and fencing for "first blood," where a single touch wins. Then it's on to the pool, where competitors swim a 200-meter sprint; stroke style is each competitor's choice. Without even taking time to dry off, competitors head to the equestrian arena where they each coax an unfamiliar horse around and over a course of fences. Then, after "resting" atop that horse for a bit, there's a final, two-mile cross-country run. The entire competition takes about 12 hours.

September Jan-Ove Waldner is close to 35 years old, a vintage age for a table tennis player, and he hasn't been ranked No1 in the world for almost three years, yet the indications are he will again be the sport's big-name player at the Olympics. Swede's presence a perfect delight For an idea of why China could sweep table tennis gold at the Sydney Olympics , watch the wunderkids training in the echoey gymnasium of Beijing's East District Sports School. Aged between five and 12, they play like hardened competitors. Faces etched with concentration, they dart around the tables, deftly spinning and smashing returns with paddles that dwarf their small hands, across nets some can hardly see over.
