While much of the traditional and ceremonial ways disappeared under the strong missionary influence, there has recently been a resurgence in interest and practice of the old ways. This has accompanied a revival of the Tahitian language, which was banned until recently, but is now an official language alongside French.
While Christianity plays a strong part of daily life, the ancient traditions of music, dance, artwork and tattooing are still important, as are the important life ceremonies. This tradition can be seen in the vibrant and vital music and dance that is so impressive for visitors, in the crafts, and in the relaxed, open way of life.
The islands have a wealth of oral history and many of these stories are also told in dance. The women have their own Polynesian style of vibrant and exotic dance with body movements emphasised by swaying grass skirts and flower garlands. The men's fire dance, with flaming sticks twirling, is performed in darkness and accompanied by a compelling drumbeat. The dancing is a precise skill that is taught from a young age and is intrinsic to every Polynesian child's life.

Tahiti
"Hare Mai, Hare Mai, Hare Mai!!" Those words became a familiar sound recently while I was attending a meeting in Tahiti of national associations of non-government agencies throughout the Pacific. I sort of stumbed into attending the meeting as they asked for representation from Ayuda Network. Since the current chairperson and vice-person were unable to attend the meeting, I was asked. I am a former chairperson and familiar with it programs. Meetings have a way of being boring affairs, no matter what the meeting is about. As usual, the meetings themselves were true to form. However, the setting in which the meetings were held was fasctinating. Tahiti has two major islands: Papeete and Moorea. The first island is urban and fairly hectic, a good deal like Guam. The second island is less urbanized, slower, and and much more friendly. I'd compare it to Rota but it is more urbanized, maybe like Saipan ten or fifteen years ago. We stayed on Morrea for a week while we had the meeting. We were well taken care of by the community, almost smothered by their attention.
The week was a great reminder for me of the importance of culture, something I had learned in detail years ago and have taken for gratned in recent years. The people of Tahiti were close to their culture. Certainly, there was the influence of modern technology and French political control for years but their culture was still a vital part of their lives. Over the next week or two, I would like to share with you some of thoughts about culture that my time in Tahiti sparked. Hopefully, you will find that the stories I share are about the work of the Holy Spirit in our lifes.

http://www.mooreaisland.com/about.html
The island of Moorea is one of the most well traveled and touristed destinations in all of Tahiti Polynesia. Despite its popularity, most who arrive are quite unfamiliar with basic information about the island: facts, basic cultural knowledge, the weather and people, animals, art, or even where the beaches are located.
Although visitors usually arrive with the simple desire to just relax and take in the Pacific Island charm, it doesn't take long before the true nature of French Polynesia begins to unfold for them, as it does with ALL other Tahitian islands...
A couple of days on Moorea and they begin to recognize it for it's many faces beyond a mere "Island vacationland." Filled with a unique energy unto itself, Moorea is a favorite among the Society Islands for a variety of reasons, many of which are listed on this page. There's no place on earth quite like it... Of course return travelers and local inhabitants know that. Each lives or returns to Moorea for their own reasons...
This page unveils information, facts, and insight for discovery of your OWN reasons to become enchanted with this lovely South Pacific paradise.

History
Polynesians may have settled Pitcairn as long as 3500 years ago, at least temporarily, and archaeologists believe there was a Polynesian settlement on the island between the 12th and 15th centuries AD. At that time, a lively trade was carried on between Pitcairn, Henderson - which was inhabited as well - and Mangareva, in what is now the Gambier Archipelago of south-eastern French Polynesia. These earlier settlements left burial sites containing human skeletons, petroglyphs, earth ovens, stone adzes and other artefacts, although no one is sure where the original Pitcairners came from. Pitcairn is likely to have been important for its quarry where stone adzes were mined. Despite Pitcairn's diminutive size, its fertile volcanic soils were (and still are) able to support a permanent population. By 1606, when Spanish explorer de Quiros came looking for his own personal El Dorado and found Henderson, both it and presumably Pitcairn were deserted. Pitcairn's European discovery had to wait until 1767, when Philip Carteret sailed by on HMS

Just how the Polynesian peoples came to populate their islands of the Pacific is a subject of some debate. What is clear, however, is that they were great sailors and navigators who traversed vast distances of open ocean to settle as far and wide as present-day French Polynesia, Hawaii, New Zealand, parts of the New Guinea island, Tonga and the Cook Islands. It's thought that they left South-East Asia around 3000 or 4000 years ago and began to arrive in present-day French Polynesia around 300 AD. Islands were originally ruled by chieftains who commanded huge fleets of outrigger canoes; religious practices at this time included human sacrifices. Some of the first European visitors, which included Samuel Wallis (1767), Louis-Antoine de Bougainville (1768) and James Cook (1769), returned with stories of a paradise on earth inhabited by 'noble savages' and Venus-like women whose sexual favours were freely offered to the visitors. Europe was abuzz with stories of a tropical haven of free love when Bougainville returned to Paris and this myth attracted the likes of Herman Melville, Robert Louis Stevenson and Paul Gauguin. But the most famous event in the region's recent history was the mutiny on the Bounty . It was on Tahiti and the Austral island of Tubuai that Fletcher Christen and his mutineers sought refuge after setting William Bligh and his faithful crew members adrift in a tiny open boat near the Tongan islands on 28 April 1789. And, ultimately, it was on Tahiti that the long arm of British law rounded up those mutineers who hadn't escaped to Pitcairn Island, and made them face British justice.

http://www.tahitinet.com/abouttfs.html
About the Tahiti Friendship Society We are a new organization promising to explore and promote Tahitian culture in the United States. The Tahiti Friendship Society, centered out of Santa Barbara California, was started recently by numerous Americans and Tahitians (residing in America) who are united in their passion for the arts, music and culture(s) of the islands of French Polynesia. We believe that there is something about Tahitian culture that can touch the spirit and the soul of all people, and this is rare. The organization will promote Tahitian dance and music exhibitions featuring groups from Tahiti and the U.S., and organize seminars for growing number of Americans interested in learning Tahitian dance and musical instruments. We realize that the 'source' of the culture is in the hearts and minds of the people of French Polynesia; we have to figure out a way to get Tahitians involved. According to President and Tubuai island native, Diana Tere, the group hopes to help promote the understanding and interest in Tahitian arts. "We are going to publish a quarterly journal that will encompass creative and scientific writings about French Polynesia as well as the arts. We will invite submissions from the great scholars interested in Tahiti as well as anyone wishing to express their thoughts in prose or poetry and artists and craftsmen from Tahiti and around the world who have captured these islands in their art."

The People

The 1988 population census found a total of about 190,000 people in French Polynesia. However the criteria used for defining the racial groups can only approximate a breakdown of: 70% Polynesian, 12% European, 10% Polynesian/European, five per-cent Chinese, and three percent Polynesian/Chinese. All are French citizens. The 1988 population figures for the five administrative subdivisions are Windward Islands 140,341, Leeward Islands 22,232, Austral Islands 6,500, Tuamotu/Gambier Islands 12,374, Marquesas Islands 7,358. About 70% of the total population lives on Tahiti. The indigenous people of Tahiti-Polynesia are the maohi or Eastern Polynesians (as opposed to the Western Polynesians in Samoa and Tonga). Racial intermariages are commun and many Tahitians can claim French, Chinese, American and Polynesian ancestry. This accounts for the physical beauty of the inhabitants and the total abscence of racial prejudice, either from the Europeans or the Tahitians. Education
Formal education is mandatory in Tahiti for every child to the age of 14. Primary education begins at age five, and continues to the age of 12, when children begin secondary education.

Just 7 1/2 hours from Los Angeles, Tahiti's unique history, friendly people and breathtaking
beauty are waiting for your arrival. Tahiti and Her Islands comprise an area officially known as
French Polynesia. A total land area of these 118 islands and atolls add up to only 4,000 sq. km.,
and consists of five archipelagoes: the Society Islands, Austral Islands, Marquesas Islands,
Tuamotu atolls and the Mangareva Islands. American Citizens must have a valid passport to visit Tahiti. Cooled by the gentle breezes of the Pacific, the climate in French Polynesia is sunny and
pleasant. Roughly speaking, there are two seasons: from November through May the climate is
warmer and humid, while April through October is cooler and drier. Most of the rain falls during
the warmer season, but there are also many lovely sunny days during these months, with
refreshing trade winds. French Polynesia is 2 hours behind US Pacific Standard Time, when it is
noon Sunday in Tahiti, it is 2 p.m. Sunday in Los Angeles. The mixture of Polynesian and French cultures has resulted in a fertile culinary environment.

Tahiti: A Voyage to Paradise
The very idea of a Tahiti vacation evokes thoughts of an exotic voyage to French Polynesia to the "Island of Love.” Here the natural beauty of the islands, the warmth of the people, and the very spirit of romance caress all who travel there like a soft tropical breeze. Tahiti is the crown jewel in this collection of island gems and a first choice for those seeking to bathe themselves in all the luxury the tropics can offer.
Dive into native culture or a pacific lagoon. Share a romantic dinner at an intimate French restaurant. Or join the eclectic mix of diners at the waterfront parking lot served by "roulettes"—licensed food trucks. On any tropical evening, the magic of Tahiti will be there and will stay with you long after you reluctantly leave.
