New Taiwan Government, New Hope for Peace A fter a tense presidential election, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) won 39% of the ballots, ending the 55-year KMT ruling. On May 20, 2000, the tenth president and vice-president made their inaugural speeches, which attracted much attention from Mainland China. The relationship across the Taiwan Strait immediately became even more tense, drawing the attention of the media from all over the world. O n May 13, 2000, the people of Taoyuan County held a farewell party for Ms. Annette Lu, who was the first female Vice President-elect of Taiwan, as well as the incumbent county magistrate of Taoyuan County. Ms. Annette Lu and Mr. Chen Shui-bian, the President-elect, both gave very touching speeches. The farewell party, called "One Step Up, Blessing and Expectation" was attended by Dr. Hong Tao Tze, President of AWC Taiwan and also Honorary Vice President of AWC, along with 36 other AWC Taiwan representatives. In his opening remarks, Dr. Hong formally introduced AWC to the audience. S ponsors of the party invited the well-known Tai Ji Men Qigong Academy to perform their powerful drum performance during the opening ceremony. Also invited were many popular entertainers and performing groups. At the party, Ms. Annette Lu stated, "During my term in office, I will build Taiwan into a green silicon island. Through everlasting love between people, Taiwan's intelligence, and passion, we can share the world and the earth as well."

77. Holidays And Festivals In Taiwan
Information about traditional holidays and commemorative holidays in taiwan. By government Information Office, taiwan.
http://www.gio.gov.tw/info/festival_c/index_e.htm
Holidays and Festivals in the Republic of China have a distinctive quality and are closely interwoven with the lives of the people.
The main holidays and festivals in Taiwan may be divided into two major categories : Festivals are associated with the traditional lunar calendar whereas official holidays are celebrated according to the western calendar . The lunar festivals developed from the customs of China's past, and to the celebrants, these occasions are a time for recalling one's cultural origins and remembering the wisdom of early ages. Such festivals include the Chinese New Year Festival, and Lantern Festival, all symbolic of discarding the old and ushering in the new; the Dragon Boat Festival, a time for warding off evil and strengthening the body; the Ghost Festival, when the outcasts from the underworld are given salvation; the Mid-Autumn Festival a celebration of the full moon and unity of mankind; and Double Ninth Festival is to remember the olders.
Official commemorative holidays are primarily based on the achievements of the people and are celebrated to remember events important to the development of the nation. These occasions include the Founding Day of the Republic of China; 228 Memorial Day; Women's Day; Youth Day; Children's Day; Tomb Sweeping Day; Armed Forces Day; Teachers' Day; and days commemorating the decisive events of the ROC's history, including Double Tenth National Day; Taiwan's Retrocession Day; and Constitution Day to name a few.

MSTKG Secret Police Subdue Falun Gong Practitioneer on "National Day" October 1, 2000 Tiananmen Square, Beijing From Lu Xun's Introduction to Call To Arms He explains why he took up literature: Lu Xun ...one day I saw a film showing some Chinese, one of whom was bound, while many others stood around him. They were all strong fellows but appeared completely apathetic. According to the commentary, the one with his hands bound was a spy working for the Russians, who was to have his head cut off by the Japanese military as a warning to others, while the Chinese beside him had come to enjoy the spectacle. Before the term was over I had left for Tokyo, because after this film I felt that medical science was not so important after all. The people of a weak and backward country, however strong and healthy they may be, can only serve to be made examples of, or to witness such futile spectacles; and it doesn't really matter how many of them die of illness. The most important thing, therefore, was to change their spirit, and since at that time I felt that literature was the best means to this end, I determined to promote a literary movement.
