The Tajik Minister of Culture was shot and killed early today as he left his apartment in the Tajikistan capital of Dushanbe.
An unidentified gunman shot Minister Abdurakhim Rakhimov at close range as he set off for work, said Interior Minister Khumdin Sharipov.
Rakhimov, 53, was appointed culture minister in January.
The murder is said to be politically motivated as Rakhimov was responsible for arranging the festivities devoted to the 10th anniversary of Tajik independence this weekend.
The central Asian country was embroiled in a five-year civil war with mostly Islamic forces and the government after the Soviet break-up.
Despite a 1997 ceasefire and efforts to integrate the opposition into Government, the violence has continued. The country’s Deputy Interior Minister was murdered in April. Tajikistan has also become a gateway for narcotics and weapons smuggled from neighbouring Afghanistan. < Go Back Home Search by date Search by keyword ... The most revered figures from Tajikistan's Persian past are the 10th century philosopher-scientist Abu Ali ibn Sina, author of two of the most important books in the history of medicine, and the poet Rudaki, court poet in Bukhara in the time of the Samanids. Tajiks also venerate Firdausi, a poet and composer of the Shah-nameh (Book of Kings), the Persian national epic, and Omar Khayyam, of Rubaiyat fame, both born in present-day Iran but at a time when it was in the same empire as Tajikistan. When Tajikistan was hived off from Uzbekistan in 1929, the new nation-state was forced to leave behind its cultural baggage. The new Soviet order set about providing a replacement pantheon of arts, introducing modern drama, opera and ballet. The policy paid early dividends and the 1940s are considered a golden era of Tajik theatre. A kind of Soviet fame came to some Tajik novelists and poets, such as Mirzo Tursunzade and Sadriddin Ayni, the latter now remembered more as a deconstructor of national culture because of his campaign to eliminate all Arabic expressions and references to Islam from the Tajik tongue. Since independence there has been something of a cultural revival in an attempt to foster a sense of national identity. The succuss of Tajikistan's most popular living writer, Taimur Zulfikarov, is attributed to his abiity to mimic the ancient Persian style of writing and, in doing so, to appeal to nationalist sentiments. Most Tajiks are Muslim (Sunni) but they are not, by and large, militant or particularly strict. Though the harnessing of Islamic sentiment has been a stronger political force in Tajikistan than in other Central Asian republics, the rural, often semi-nomadic lifestyle preferred by most Tajiks is unsuited to central religious authority. Many older Tajik men continue to dress in long quilted jackets, knee-length boots and embroidered caps. Women of all ages favour psychedelically coloured, gold-threaded long dresses with striped trousers underneath and head scarves to match.

Introduction
This beleaguered Central Asian republic has its own flag, a national airline and a scattering of embassies abroad, but despite these emblems of sovereignty it remains a curiously incomplete and terribly troubled country. The north of Tajikistan is in all but name a part of Uzbekistan; the mountainous Pamir region, despite Soviet attempts to populate it, remains almost a vacuum; while the capital, Dushanbe, a city not yet three-quarters of a century old still feels like an apartment awaiting its tenants. The high point of the country's unparalleled scenery are the Pamirs, which dwarf anything found outside Nepal. The Pamir Highway provides all the high-altitude thrills you could ever hope to get without donning crampons. That Tajikistan was easily the most artificial and ill-equipped of the five Soviet-fashioned Central Asian republics was tragically illustrated by the way it bloodily fell apart as soon as it was free of direct rule from Moscow. Civil war raged until a late-1996 ceasefire, and in mid-1997, Iran, Russia and the United Nations got together to broker a peace agreement. Despite celebratory dancing in the streets of Dushanbe and hopes for a peaceful future, the country has proved far from stable, surviving on a drip feed of credits and loans from Moscow while the Pamiris survive on the largesse of the Aga Khan. Visitors should definitely check the latest security situation before turning up.

Introductory Note:
  • The cultures of Central Asia and Iran share a number of remarkable features. They are Islamic, albeit Sunnite and Shi'ite, and they enjoy a common cosmology and mythology. Additionally, they share the same early history. Indeed, until the rise of the Western Turks and the subsequent coming of the Turks and Mongols to Central Asia, the primary population of the region was Iranian. As descendants of the earlier Indo-European peoples, they followed the teachings of Zoroaster and worshiped his God, Ahura Mazda.
  • From the foregoing, we can conclude that any social, political, or ideological study of the early history of this region must take this common heritage into consideration. To respect the shared values of the Iranian and the Central Asian peoples, therefore, the following arrangement is adhered to. The more recent events appear under "Central Asia" and "Iran" respectively. The ancient and medieval issues that cannot be logically divided appear under "Central Asia and Iran."

Tajikistan Time and Date Tajikistan Culture Back to Top The area now called Tajikistan has an ancient culture, and many popular traditions and customs have been retained, including the costumes worn by both men and women and such ancient festivals as the New Year celebration, known as Nauruz, which takes place on March 21, the period of the vernal equinox. A newer festival celebrates the gathering of the cotton crop. These colourful affairs incorporate horse races, horsemanship, and wrestling contests. Although religion was actively persecuted during the Soviet period, Muslims (mostly Sunnite) continued regular mosque worship and observed religious holidays where possible. In the late 1980s, religious persecution abated and religious practices revived. The principal language of the republic, Tajik (known to its speakers as Tojiki), with distinct northern and southern dialects, belongs to the southwest group of Iranian languages, in the Indo-European family; it is very closely related to Dari and is also used widely in neighbouring Afghanistan. The language of the Pamir Tajiks belongs to the eastern Iranian group. Tajik was formerly written in a modified Arabic and later in the Roman alphabet, but since 1940 it has used a modified Cyrillic script. Writers from this region have made notable contributions to literature since the 10th century AD, and a vigorous folk literature continues.

Country Info Tajikistan Introduction Tajikistan General Data Tajikistan Maps Tajikistan Culture ... Tajikistan Time and Date Tajikistan History Back to Top Tajiks are descendents of the Indo-Iranian peoples who inhabited the ancient regions of Sogdiana (in southeastern Central Asia) and Bactria (northern Afghanistan and southern Tajikistan) before recorded history. Sogdiana included the northern portion of present-day Tajikistan, and its people spoke an ancient Iranian language. In the 6th century bc Sogdiana became a satrapy of the Achaemenid Empire of ancient Persia. Alexander the Great, king of Macedonia, conquered the region in the 300s bc, but Macedonian control collapsed with Alexander’s death in 323. Sogdiana was known to the Greeks as Transoxiana. In the 100s bc Sogdiana was included in the vast empire of the Kushanas, an area that at its height stretched from Central Asia to northern India. Sogdiana was then a central hub on the Silk Road, a collective term for the ancient caravan trade routes that linked China with the Middle East, India, and imperial Rome. The Tajiks are the direct descendants of the Iranian peoples whose continuous presence in Central Asia and northern Afghanistan is attested from the middle of the 1st millennium BC. The ancestors of the Tajiks constituted the core of the ancient population of Khwarezm (Khorezm) and Bactria, which formed part of Transoxania (Sogdiana). They were included in the empires of Persia and Alexander the Great, and they intermingled with such later invaders as the Kushans and Hepthalites in the 1st–6th centuries AD. Over the course of time, the eastern Iranian dialect that was used by the ancient Tajiks eventually gave way to Farsi, a western dialect spoken in Iran and Afghanistan.

As they did during the Soviet era, educated Tajiks define their cultural heritage broadly, laying claim to the rich legacy of the supraethnic culture of Central Asia and other parts of the Islamic world from the eastern Mediterranean to India. Soviet rule institutionalized Western art forms, publishing, and mass media, some elements of which subsequently attracted spontaneous support in the republic. However, since the beginning of Soviet rule in the 1920s, the media and the arts always have been subject to political constraints. Literature Despite long-standing Soviet efforts to differentiate between the Persian speakers of Central Asia and those elsewhere, Tajiks in Tajikistan describe all of the major literary works written in Persian until the twentieth century as Tajik, regardless of the ethnicity and native region of the author. In Soviet times, such claims were not merely a matter of chauvinism but a strategy to permit Tajiks some contact with a culture that was artificially divided by state borders. Nevertheless, very little Persian literature was published in Cyrillic transcription in the Soviet era.

    Tajikistan Tajikistan Early History
Between the first and fourth centuries, the area that is now Tajikistan and adjoining territories were part of the Kushan realm, which had close cultural ties to India. The Kushans, whose exact identity is uncertain, played an important role in the expansion of Buddhism by spreading the faith to the Soghdians, who in turn brought it to China and the Turks. By the first century A.D., the Han dynasty of China had developed commercial and diplomatic relations with the Soghdians and their neighbors, the Bactrians. Military operations also extended Chinese influence westward into the region. During the first centuries A.D., Chinese involvement in this region waxed and waned, decreasing sharply after the Islamic conquest but not disappearing completely. As late as the nineteenth century, China attempted to press its claim to the Pamir region of what is now southeastern Tajikistan. Since the breakup of the Soviet Union, China occasionally has revived its claim to part of this region.
