Tanzania: Culture CULTURE A marriage, is of some importance not only to those involved in the marriage, but to the community as a whole. Bride wealth, and mode of payment varied from one ethnic group to another. Among cattle-keeping people, cattle were the kind of payment, but beer, cloth, meat, money were widely used by other ethnic groups. The role of kin is still central to Tanzanian social and recreational life. Visiting kin on joyous and sorrowful family occasions is given high priority despite the inconvenience caused by a relatively undeveloped transport system. Educated members of the extended family are frequently held responsible for the education and welfare of younger siblings. Colonial rule brought about many changes in chieftainship; in any case the actions and demands of colonial administrators and chiefs led to a situation in which chiefs were always in conflict with their people, not responsible and responsive to them but to the colonial act of governing. Immediately after independence, chieftainship was abolished, and administrative officials were elected, however, it continued to exist informally as a social and geographic unit, especially in remote areas. Another social form introduced to replace chieftainship is what is known as Council of Elders. The councils have some form of authority and deals with a wide range of social issues. In some groups (Masai for example), the division of labor by age prevailed as a determinant factor in the individual allocation of rights and duties. Today Tanzania's multiethnic and multiracial population practices a variety of traditions and customs that form a rich cultural heritage

Asians are a significant minority especially in the towns and cities. Europeans (either by descent or expatriate) are a smaller minority. The major non-Bantu people on the mainland are the Masai (Nilotic speakers) who inhabit the north-eastern section of the country. There are still many tribes who follow neither of the big-name religions and instead worship the ancient spirit of their choice. Principal among them are the Masai, who put their faith in the god Engai and his Messiah, Kindong'oi, from whom their priests are said to be descended. It's claimed that there is no religious bias present in the country's political and civil administration.

They believe God entrusted the cattle to the Masai people, and wealth is measured in number of cattle. The they are known for their tradition of hair plaits, heavy iron necklaces, and fierce warriormanship, often depicted carrying a spear. The Masai's unique hair is a clear living symbol of their tradition and culture. By wearing the plaits, it proves the individual is a true Morani sticking to their own traditions. The Masai drink cows blood which they believe makes the body stronger and warmer and is good for children and the elderly to build up their strength. It is often drunk mixed with the milk of the cow. For the boys, 15 is the coming of age ritual, when they become circumcised and become Morani (young warriors), formally they would hunt a lion with a spear during the rites of passage ceremony but lion hunting is now illegal.

Each of these events have required Tanzanians to adapt to new physical and human social arrangements and have contributed to the distinctive cultures of the people who inhabit the country. Today Tanzania's multiethnic and multiracial population practices a variety of traditions and customs that forms a rich cultural heritage [1] . Kinship provides the foundation for interpersonal relations and group formation in Tanzanian culture. This pattern can be traced to the earliest recorded periods and continues to the present time. Kin ties through parentage and marriage define an individual's social rights, obligations, and opportunities. This said, the nature of kin ties varies greatly from one ethnic group to another. Given the centrality of such familial origination to Tanzanian society, marriage is of particular importance not only to the immediate family but to the community as a whole. As in earlier European and American history, the economic side of marriage is recognized in such exchanges as bridewealth. These exchanges have traditionally varied from one ethnic group to another.
