Animals of the RRRS - ARACHNIDS TARANTULAS Some tarantula species can live over 20 years. Their diet consists of smaller items than itself, including spiders, crickets, grasshoppers, etc., small snakes, lizards, toads and baby mice. A bite from a tarantula will cause localized pain and swelling. When stressed or threatened, many species will flick hairs off their abdomen using their hind legs. If flung into the eyes or nose of a lizard or mouse, they often divert the attack. The spider will regenerate the hairy patches after their next molt. MISSING A LEG? If a limb is missing, but appears to be healed, over the next several molts (unless males with limited molts to maturity) the limb will regenerate. MOLTING
A critical period for tarantulas is the molting (or shedding) of the exoskeleton. When close to molting it becomes sluggish and stops eating. Approximately 4 times a year for the first 2 years, 2 times a year for the next 4 years and mature adults at least once a year. During molting, the old exoskeleton splits and forms a shell from which the spider must free itself. The tarantulas at the Refuge are mainly here because the novelty wore off and the people became bored with it, or their friends were no longer scared of it so the tarantula was no longer wanted. To scare your friends with a living creature is not much of a life for it, so that is why the Refuge decided to care for tarantulas, as well as reptiles and amphibians.

Here's the band in gritty black and white. Tell-Mama used a digital camera for the first time, so pictures are limited. Ellie Bogue of the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel was kind enough to warn me not to expect too much of this camera right away. She's a great fan and adds beauty to any event she attends. News Sentinel events pages, (be careful to make sure that "events for today" is actually the correct date) and Otto's gigs page Johnny Rebel on guitar. Recognize him from The Flying Saucers? He had played with them until about three months ago when he joined up with the Tarantulas. Pistol Pete on bass. As Otto often says, this is hard hard work. The band played fast and furious. It is a wonder anyone had a voice left by closing time. Thanks, gentlemen, for bringing so much fun to the Fort. Alex Trejano on drums. Otto apologizes for the lack of skill with the new digital camera. Back to the drawing board. Alex, bring the band back often, please! I always list tattoo credits but this time I didn't get the info. Johnny's tattoos are from "all over," including New Orleans, Columbus OH and Detroit. Awesome tats. The Statue of Liberty on Pete's right bicep is excellent.

Glad you asked that one - any individual tarantula is a species within a genera within one of the nine subfamilies of the family Theraphosidae . This family is, in turn, one of the families within the infraorder Mygalomorphae which exists in the suborder Opisthotelae . This is a suborder of the order Araneae which lives in the class Arachnida which is contained in the subphylum Chelicerata. Of course, being a sub phylum means that there is a phylum and this is called Arthropoda which is one of the twenty seven phylums that, when added together, make up the whole of the Animal Kingdom.
So take your Indian Ornamental Tree Spider - he is of the Genus Poecilotheria Species regalis . So I guess that makes him a: Animalia Arthropoda Chelicerata Arachnida Aranae Opisthothelae Mygalomorphae Theraposidae Selenocosmiinae Poecilotheria regalis
Let's keep it simple and just say that tarantulas are big spiders (unless you are an anorak).
So where to they come from?

    Caring for your Tarantula

    Keeping a Tarantula
Before you buy a tarantula you should think about the conditions it will need to live a long and healthy life. Many tarantulas die in the first few days because their new owner hasn't prepared a suitable home for them. First decide what you want to buy because a small spiderling will obviously require very different accommodation to a large grown specimen. I will assume you are buying a medium-sized tarantula in which case you will need to provide the following.
    Housing
Pet shops will sell suitable tanks in glass or plastic and the size should not be less than about 25cm by 15cm by 15cm high. If you want to create a tank that tries to provide the spiders natural conditions (for example rain forest with leaf litter, logs etc.) then you will need a much larger tank, but you won't see your spider very often! I would suggest that you begin with the simple tank without unnecessary contents so that you can watch your tarantula's activities.
    Substrate (Ground cover)
A 2cm layer of Vermiculite should cover the bottom of the tank and a thin layer of chipped bark or cocoa fibre placed on top of that. These can be purchased from most garden centres and should be kept damp to keep up the humidity levels in the tank. Peat or potting compost should not be used as they really need to be sterilised and changed frequently.

Tarantulas - the truth behind their evil image
Tarantulas are the movie stars of the spider world. They are cast in films when things hairy, scary and deadly are needed. But despite their appearance and reputation, bites from these spiders usually cause little harm. So how did they get such a bad reputation?
The Tarantula story starts way back
In 1370, in a small town called Taranto in southern Italy a strange and mysterious epidemic broke out for which the only cure seemed to be wild dancing and music. Occurring every summer for three hundred years, this disease was thought to be caused by the bite of a large, hairy Wolf Spider ( Lycosa tarantula ), which became known as a Tarantula. In the 1600s, people discovered that these spiders were virtually harmless. Many then concluded that the whole phenomenon of Tarantism was simply an excuse far a wild party. However, it is now suspected that a spider was involved and the real culprit was a European relative of the Redback or Widow Spider. As Europeans colonised the world, they saw even bigger and hairier spiders, and called them Tarantulas too. As a result, many large and hairy spiders are now commonly, but incorrectly, called Tarantulas. The only true Tarantulas are the large spiders of the family Theraphosidae. Some examples of spiders from this family include:

Tarantulas Part 1: Introduction Tarantulas have been a relatively popular pet now for several years. They are exotic, quiet, and need little space, and can make a fascinating hobby, not to mention a great conversation piece. However, they aren't the best choice as a pet to be handled (due more to stress/danger to the spider rather than danger to the handler - more on that later). There are many species available in the pet trade in a vary of sizes and appearances, and they are usually easy to care for, but that depends a bit on the species. Because the needs for housing and care will vary for different species, it is important to understand the species being considered as a pet. There are over 800 species of tarantula, belonging to the family

    National Geographic - Tarantulas
Fearsome Predators There's something about spiders that gives most people the creeps, instilling a sense of fear and loathing upon seeing one. It's as though there's a part of the human brain that perceives the form of a spider as dangerous or threatening. Perhaps those deep dark feelings we get when we see a spider are echoes of an ancient human behavioral response known as instinct . Most of the thousands of species of spiders on this earth carry a venom that is virtually harmless to humans, but there are a few species which carry a deadly venom. Based on primitive human experiences a permanent message has been embedded in our genetic make-up, one that warns us that spider = danger. And when we see a spider that is as large as a dinner plate, we get the creeps BIG TIME. As hunters, tarantulas can be fearsome predators. Tarantulas don't have any special techniques, such as building intricate webs, or leaping great distances, for hunting their prey. They use good, old-fashioned stealth and strength, very much like wild cats. They sneak up on their prey and pounce on the unsuspecting victim, inflicting a fatal bite with venomous fangs.
