  • Through a compromise with the British over a northern border, Polk managed to gain the territory which now make up Washington and Oregon. This made Polk the first president to run the country extending from the Atlantic Ocean all the way to the Pacific Ocean. It was during President Polk’s term in 1845 that the abolitionist and escaped slave Frederick Douglass wrote his autobiography, endangering his own freedom by doing so. President Polk believed that the United States had a "manifest destiny" to expand. His attempts to gain more of Texas, New Mexico, and California led to the Mexican War. The invention of the revolver by Samuel Colt helped the U.S. to win this war and gain five hundred thousand square miles of land. Polk had promised to serve only one term in office. True to his word he retired at the end of his term. He died only three months after

Zachary Taylor Profile: U.S. General/President Birthdate: November 24, 1784 Died: Birthplace: Orange Co, Virginia Credits: (See Below) Biographical Notes Taylor, Zachary (1784-1850), U.S. general in the Mexican War, who became the 12th president of the United States (1849-50). Taylor was born on November 24, 1784, in Orange County, Virginia, the son of a veteran of the American Revolution. Taken to Kentucky as a child, he grew up on his father's plantation near Louisville, where he was educated by local tutors. He was married (1810) to Margaret Mackall Smith of Maryland, with whom he had four children; one of these was the first wife of Jefferson Davis , later Confederate president; another became a Confederate general. In 1808 Taylor joined the regular army as an infantry officer. After distinguishing himself under William Henry Harrison in the War of 1812 and briefly returning to civilian life, he saw active duty on various frontier posts in the Northwest and Louisiana, where he established a second home. He participated in the Black Hawk and Second Seminole wars and in 1838 defeated the Seminole in the Battle of Lake Okeechobee. Although not decisive, this engagement earned him promotion to the rank of brigadier general, and he was given overall command of the campaign against the Seminole in Florida. Taylor, who had never bothered to vote, had little political experience, but he had quarreled with President James K. Polk and sympathized with the Whigs, and thus seemed a perfect candidate for the opposition. Although he declared himself nonpartisan and was a slave owner, which might have made him unpopular in the North, the Whig party nominated him for the presidency in 1848. In the ensuing election, he defeated both his Democratic and Free-Soil opponents.

A popular hero, Taylor was nominated for President on the Whig ticket, was elected, and assumed office in 1849. His nonpartisan tendencies were changed under the influence of Senator William H. He favored rapid admission of both California and New Mexico to the Union and strict limitation of Texas boundary claims. Zachary Taylor
  • When Taylor was inaugurated in March 1849, he would not take the Oath of Office on a Sunday. The offices of President and Vice President were vacant at the time, so someone had to be the president, but who? David Rice Atchison, the President Pro Tempore of the Senate, was sworn in as president. He did not do much, when asked, he said, "I went to bed. There had been two or three busy nights finishing up the work of the Senate, and I slept most of that Sunday."
  • Taylor was a second cousin of James Madison, a fourth cousin once removed of Robert E. Lee, and a fourth cousin three times removed of Franklin D. Roosevelt.
  • Taylor's body was recently exhumed because some thought that his death was caused by murder instead of natural causes.
  • Taylor spent July 4, 1850, eating cherries and milk at a ceremony at the Washington Monument. He got sick from the heat and died five days later, the second president to die in office.
  • Taylor refused all postage due correspondences. Because of this, he didn't receive notification of his nomination for president until several days later.
  • Taylor kept his old warhorse named Whitney on the White House lawn. People would pluck hairs from it for souveniers.

Key West, Florida
This is an archive photo of the Parrot Cannon proudly displayed today in Fort Taylor's parade grounds, restored to near perfect condition. Construction of the fort began in 1845, shortly after Florida became a state. In 1850, the fort was named after U.S. President Zachary Taylor, who died in office earlier that year. Throughout the 1850s, construction on Fort Taylor was slow. Yellow fever, shortages of material and men, remoteness and hurricanes had slowed down progress. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Capt. John Brannon occupied the fort, placing it in Union hands. Key West was an important outpost for the Union because numerous blockade-running ships were detained at Key West harbor and guarded by Fort Taylor's cannons. The 10-inch Rodman and Columbiad cannons at the fort had a range of three miles. This was an impressive deterrent to the Confederate navy, preventing them from attempting to take the fort or the island of Key West. Proving to be a severe loss for the South, Fort Taylor remained in Union hands throughout the Civil War. By the time the three-story fort was finally finished in 1866 (21 years after it was begun), there were many impressive features included. Items such as sanitary facilities flushed by the tide and a desalination plant which produced drinking water from the sea were available as early as 1861. A total of 198 guns and a large supply of ammunition were on hand to secure the fort.

Zachary Taylor Battle of Buena Vista begins During the Mexican-American War, Mexican General Santa Anna surrounds the outnumbered forces of U.S. General Zachary Taylor at the Angostura Pass in Mexico and demands an immediate surrender. Taylor refused, allegedly replying, "Tell him to go to hell," and early the next morning Santa Anna dispatched some 15,000 troops to move against the 5,000 Americans. The superior U.S. artillery was able to halt one of the two advancing Mexican divisions, while Jefferson Davis' Mississippi riflemen led the defense of the extreme left flank against the other Mexican advance. By five o'clock in the afternoon, the Mexicans begin to withdraw. The Mexican-American War began with a dispute over the U.S. government's 1845 annexation of Texas. In January 1846, President James K. Polk, a strong advocate of westward expansion, ordered General Taylor to occupy disputed territory between the Nueces and Rio Grande rivers. Mexican troops attacked Taylor's forces, and in May 1846 Congress approved a declaration of war against Mexico. At Buena Vista in February 1847, and at Monterrey in September, Taylor proved a brilliant military commander, earning the nickname "Old Rough and Ready" while emerging from the war a national hero. He won the Whig presidential nomination in 1848 and defeated the Democratic candidate, Lewis Cass, in November. The other hero of the Battle of Buena Vista, Jefferson Davis, became secretary of war under President Franklin Pierce in 1853 and president of the Confederate States of America in 1861.

UIS student finds 1814 indictment on president Zachary Taylor
Samantha Edmondson Daily Egyptian Vance Martin has skimmed over several famous names within state documents during his master's work at the Illinois State Archives. But an assault and battery charge involving America's 12th president was one to pull out of the pile. In January, Martin found an 1814 indictment for assault and battery for a Maj. Zachariah Taylor that was sent to the Illinois State Archives a couple of years ago. He recently confirmed the person indicted was, in fact, former president Zachary Taylor. Within a few months, the SIUC Illinois Regional Archives Depository will release the document for public accessibility after its main headquarters in Springfield has finished it. Because he was studying history for his degree, Martin was assigned to process record projects at the state archives through the Graduate Public Service Internship through the University of Illinois at Springfield. Karl Moore, supervisor at the depository in Springfield, gave Martin a project in fall to process some documents sent from SIUE that date back to 1812. After completion, the documents were to be sent to the SIUC depository for filing.

    Zachary Taylor, 1784-1850
America's 12th president, Zachary Taylor, was the first career soldier to serve as Chief Executive. A hero of the Mexican-American War, Taylor was faced with the secession of the Southern states over slavery and turmoil over new territories. A plantation owner who held over 100 slaves, Zachary Taylor died suddenly in office of acute indigestion on July 9th, 1850. Zachary Taylor, known through his career as "Rough and Ready", was himself the son of a war hero and statesman. The son of Richard Taylor, a Revolutionary War officer who became a successful plantation owner on a 6,000 acre war bonus, Zachary Taylor was the 3rd of 9 children. Shortly after his birth on November 24th, 1784 the Taylor family left Montebello Virginia for a new plantation in Kentucky near what is now Louisville. Richard Taylor became a member of the Kentucky state legislature and was later appointed customs collector for the port of Louisville by president George Washington Despite his family's affluence, Zachary Taylor received very little education beyond those rudiments needed to run the family cotton fields. Though his youth was spent overseeing the operation of the plantation with his father, Zachary Taylor opted instead for the military. Taylor's first enlistment came in 1806 in a state militia, and was followed in 1808 by an appointment to the 7th Infantry by his second cousin, Secretary of State James Madison. Taylor entered the 7th as a lieutenant, and spent 40 years as a soldier.

Remembered for establishing the Civil Service Commission, Arthur died November 18th, 1886 at the age of 57.
