Unit: American Literature - Native American Stories Created By: Marty Sierra-Perry
Centennial High School, Champaign The tradition of storytelling in Native American communities serves many purposes. In most instances, these stories are meaningless without understanding the story's significance and purpose. Stories have been used to entertain, to teach moral lessons, to pass on personal family stories, and to teach tribal beliefs. Many stories wereand still arethe personal property of families. The extension activities we will complete during our study of Fools Crow include the following:
  • Students will read legends of the Blackfeet, the tribe of the novel, Fools Crow , by James Welch.
There are many sites that list native stories; however, few relate any background information about the significance of the story. The following Web site makes that connection and is a great story resource. Once you get to the site you may want to make copies of some of the stories and their background, in order to analyze them and relate them to the novel.
Blackfeet legends can be found at:

    By - Jamie
    Subject - Math, Music
    Grade Level - 3-6
Objective: Students will be able to identify the values of quarter, eighth, half, dotted half, and whole notes, as well as rests.
Materials: a small basketball hoop that will hook over a chalkboard or door, and a soft ball that will fit through the hoop.
a "free-throw" line made of a strip of tape on the floor. Flashcards with rhythm math problems on them. I use construction paper, and I draw rhythms as math problems, for example: "quarter note + quarter note + half note + whole note =" and on the opposite side of the card write the answer: 8 beats. (One 1/4 note = 1 beat). Divide the class into 2 teams. Have one person from Team 1 step up to the free-throw line. Hold up a flashcard. They have to add up the notes and give the correct answer to the problem to earn a shot. If they give the correct answer, they get to shoot the ball. If they make the shot, they get 2 points for their team. Then, someone from Team 2 gets a turn. To make it more challenging, you can move the line closer or farther away, add 3-pointers, or play "1 on 1", where one person from each team steps up, and whoever answers the problem correctly first gets to take the shot.

    http://wings.avkids.com/Tennis/start.html
"Aerodynamics in Sports Technology" is an interactive study of sports designed to help students understand aerodynamics, physics, and mathematics, as part of NASA's educational outreach mission via the World Wide Web. The project team is recording data from professional tennis and some of the top players in the world, focusing on how the tennis ball flies: its speed, how it spins, what happens when the ball hits the court, how it moves through the air, and the strokes of the players that generate this flight. The project will showcase computational and experimental methods developed by NASA and other researchers, and make use of new generation high speed digital cameras that allow the team to see the flight of the tennis ball in new ways. Our project is also designed to create opportunities for students and teachers from kindergarten through twelfth grade to follow the progress of an exciting research project, to interact with engineers and tennis researchers, and to pose questions, suggest experiments, and share results. You'll be able to follow our research team in live video conferences over the Internet, "chat" with investigators, and propose experiments for our team to test. We've even set it up so you can conduct your own research! The activities and lesson plans are designed to show you the same principles the research team will study, but without the expensive equipment!

Established in 1981 at the University of Maryland, the Center for Renaissance and Baroque Studies (CRBS) promotes teaching and research in the Renaissance and Baroque periods by offering academic and outreach programs in the arts and humanities and allied fields. All of the Center's efforts stem from an appreciation of the European Renaissance traditions of exploration and of attempts to relate older traditions of knowledge to new discoveries and scholarship. As an independent unit within the College of Arts and Humanities , the Center serves its campus through an array of interdisciplinary programs including symposia colloquia , and special lectures , as well as offering the Renaissance Citation for undergraduates. In addition, the Center publishes a volume series of conference proceedings and proudly hosts the Attending to Early Modern Women conference which explores various aspects of the lives and writings of women in the Renaissance. Extending its reach beyond the university campus, the Center, through the Center Alliance for School Teachers (

    To Your Physical Education Program
  • Fitness - In his classic book AEROBICS Dr. Kenneth Cooper states: "The best exercises are run ning swimming, cycling. walking, HANDBALL, basketball, and squash - and in just about that order". Handball also develops each of the other components of physical fitness. In a survey by the Presdents Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, fourteen popular sports and exercises were rated by seven fitness experts. Using the criteria of cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, and balance, HANDBALL WAS RANKED NUMBER ONE, followed by swimming and jogging. A Lifetime Sport - Team Sports and games are fine, but it's important to expose students to lifetime activities as well. Handball is one of the few lifetime sports that is fitness and skill related. The game is addictive, and competition is available in all age categories, even for the over 70 crowd. A Game for Everyone - With the invention of the new family handball a few years ago, handball has become a sport for everyone. This ball is slightly softer than the regulation handball and does not hurt the hands. There are now all kinds of competitions for women, from the National Open and National Collegiate levels down to the Junior age divisions.
