USMC Virtual Teen Summit Spotlights Teen Issues

The 2002 USMC Virtual Teen Summit (VTS) was held at the Naval Media Center in Washington, D.C., on July 25, 2002. Marine Corps teens from around the globe gathered to take part in this first of its kind event, which was hosted by Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, SgtMaj. Alford P. McMichael and his wife Rita.
The Town Hall broadcast featured 3 video vignettes spotlighting successful youth and teen initiatives resulting from past Teen Summits, and a moderated discussion where teens could phone, fax, or email questions about their important issues which were answered by the McMichaels. At the end of the program a $5,000 check was awarded to the MCB Camp Pendleton, CA, Teen Activities Program, for their outstanding achievements over the last year.
The broadcast had a live studio audience and worldwide online viewers from as far away as Japan and Europe. Teens from MCAS Iwakuni, Japan; MCB Camp Butler, Okinawa; MCB Hawaii; MCB Camp Pendleton, CA; MCAS Miramar, CA, and Marine Detachment Fort Leonard Wood, Mo, phoned, faxed, and emailed questions for the McMichaels. The studio audience made up of 29 teens from MCB Camp Lejeune, NC; MCB Quantico, VA; and Henderson Hall, VA, also had questions of their own. More than 300 participants of the 4H Youth Technology Conference in St Paul, MN, also watched the program via the Internet.

What guidelines should I give my daughter about online health information?
- Debbie, Bakersfield, CA
Digital technologies have made unprecedented amounts of health and medical information available to the public. Although this information is readily available, not all of it is useful, as ease of access has nothing to do with accuracy.
If your daughter has gone in search of health information online, she is not alone. A study by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that a majority of U.S. 15-to-24-year-olds have searched for health information online, seeking out information on topics like sexual health and pregnancy, birth control, HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, as well as information on weight issues, mental health, drugs, alcohol, and violence.
This quest for information is not surprising given that one of the major tasks of adolescence is to gain independence, and learning to take care of the physical self and emotional self is a significant part of this process - but so are you. While your daughter is on her way to becoming independent, she's not there just yet. She is seeking the counsel of friends, discovering who and what she can trust, and asking lots of questions both of the people around her as well as of herself. In addition to advice, she needs your help making sense of the advice - whether it's something you offer aloud or messages implied in pop culture.

Often we like to do a lot of the same things. , Help your teen get in thehabit of asking questions, rather than conforming to her friends.
http://www.pbs.org/parents/issuesadvice/growingwithmedia/teen/milestones/milesto
How children use media has a lot to do with who they are. Although no two kids are exactly alike, children generally go through the same stages of development. Knowing what these stages are can help you encourage your child to use media in new and creative ways.
"My image of my body is changing as I grow and develop. My diet and health contribute to how I feel about myself, but so do societal attitudes." Your teen may be swapping (mis)information about health and development with her friends as well as looking at magazines and newspapers. Introduce your teen to resources - online and in print - that are consistent with what you think she should know. She may be internalizing negative body images and stereotypes from pop culture and need your guidance. She also may need to hear you speak out against these stereotypes. "I am between childhood and adulthood, discovering who I am and how I fit in. I'm coming into my own, apart from my parents and family." Help your teen achieve independence by learning how to tell her own stories. Rather than just watching shows made by others, encourage her to write, film or draw her stories. If you have a camcorder, put your teen behind the lens, or encourage her to take a class or work independently. "Sometimes I may be withdrawn and unwilling to share. I may not be very communicative."

Context and Questions
Several basic questions permeate the discussion of statutory rape laws. A clear understanding of these questions will help put proposed legislation in context and focus discussion of the legislation. We encourage legislators and their staff to consider the following:
  • What is the purpose of statutory rape laws?
    What does criminal prosecution mean?
Are the purposes furthered through the criminal laws?
What other State efforts and policies need to be considered?
What is the purpose of statutory rape laws? Laws making sex with minors a crime and the proposed changes to these laws may have more than one purpose. Generally, the more specific a State can be in outlining a law s purpose or purposes, the better. Knowing the specifics will further discussion and help the State develop and pass laws that accurately address what the State determines to be prosecutable.

    Discussion Questions
These questions are included to facilitate discussion, particularly between teenagers and adults, after reading this special section. The Mass Media:
If a martian landed on earth and only watched television for a week, what would it think women look like and do? What would it think men look like and do? Do you think that there is enough fair and accurate coverage of teen issues in the media? What stories are not shown about the lives of teens? What are some examples of a positive portrayal of relationships or sexuality on television or in the movies? What made it positive? If there is one absolutely important message that the media can give to teenagers about AIDS, what would it be? How do talk shows portray sex and relationships? Do you think movies, TV, music, and advertising affects the decisions young people make about whether and when to become sexually active?"
    Sexuality and relationships
Why is sexuality often a difficult topic for people to talk openly about? Is it important to talk more openly about it? What would make it easier to talk about sexuality? Do you think young people are having sex or getting into relationships at an earlier age than they used to 10, 20, 30, or 40 years ago?
