Captive Care of the Tegu Lizard by Lenny Flank, Jr. Are you an experienced herper looking for an interesting, colorful and active lizard to add to your collection? If so, then the Latin American Tegu may be for you. Tegus are members of the Teiid family of lizards and are closely related to the North American Whiptails (Cnemidophorus species) and the Latin American Jungle Runners (Amieva species). In appearence and habits, the Tegus mimic the African and Asian Monitor Lizards, to which they are not closely related. This is an example of what biologists refer to as "convergent evolution", in which organisms from different groups evolve towards the same body plan and habits in response to similar environmental niches. Taxonomically, the Tegus are the subject of much debate. There are at least three recognized species of Tegu. The most highly prized is the Red Tegu, Tupinambis rufescens, which is found in the northern part of Argentina. The Black and White Tegu, Tupinambis teguixin, is native to Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay (some taxonomists argue in favor of renaming this animal as T. merianae). It is not often seen in captivity. The common Tegu found on dealer lists is the Black Tegu, Tupinambis nigropunctatus (some taxonomists advocate dropping this name and replacing it with T. teguixin, which, they argue, has been incorrectly applied to the Argentine Black and White Tegu). The Black Tegu is found throughout the Amazon Basin. Finally, some taxonomists are advocating the creation of one (possibly two) new species, based on recent finds.

Ameivas
Ameiva ameiva . Also called Jungle Runner, Dwarf Tegu These colorful lizards are related to the tegu. Like the some of the tegus, they can be nervous and nippy, and some species are more aggressive than others. They need lots of room, more than their size would seem to indicate. They are quick and prone to flights of panic, at least until well acclimated. They are found in the tropical open forests, woodlands and agricultural areas. Like the other Teiids, they have the long pointed snout, long tongue and tail. Strong limbs and long claws. Like their tegu cousins, they are diurnal, omnivorous and oviparous. Similar to the Racerunners ( Cnemidorphorus spp.) but have longer snouts than racerunners. These are active lizards, diggers and burrowers, so need a spacious enclosure with deep substrate layer, hide boxes. Some may make use of some low climbing branches or bark slabs for basking. Males typically have turquoise blue bellies; females white. Older males develop the characteristic thick jowls.

My Pet Tegu
I currently own two tegus. One is an argentine black and white tegu ( tupinambis merianae ) named Niels which I purchased from Agama International , a captive reptile breeder located in Alabama. The other is a columbian black and white tegu ( tupinambis teguixin ) named Peaches which my girlfriend gave to me for my 22nd birthday. Niels Peaches
Enclosure
I am including the discussion of the enclosure here because both tegus live in the enclosure and prettymuch everything that I have to say about it is the same for both animals. I constructed the enclosure in which Peaches and Niels live, which is 8' long by 2.5' deep by 2' high. It had been 1.5' high but I found that too restrictive and limiting, so I retrofitted it with taller walls. I've learned some interesting things about building tegu enclosures, which I'll try to relate here. For the moment, let it suffice to say:
  • Plexiglass is great stuff strong enough to withstand a hungry tegu ramming into it when running at the approaching food dish, flexible enough not to hurt said tegu whenhe hits it, very optically clear, and a better insulator than glass. Unfortunately, however, the flexibility of plexiglass has a downside: plexiglass is very flexible stuff and this means that one needs to put a lot of latches on it to keep tegus from pushing it far enough to create a place to escape.

  • Have you ever considered breeding Chilean Dwarf Tegus (Callopistes maculatus)?
    1. How difficult is it to breed super mealworms?
These animals need much care, almost daily. Humidity is the main problem: too dry and they die, and too moist and everything molts. the strategy is staying inbetween.
    2. Would breeding super mealworms make sense for a person who only owns one or two tegus?
It would make more sense to breed cockroaches if you're only supplying a small demand.

There are several species of Tegu, and two in particular seem to elicit
a fair amount of confusion. These are the Black Tegu, and the Black and White Tegu.
Goliath was a Black Tegu, however he had a brilliant gold pattern.
It was previously thought that this color-phase of the Black Tegu
was a separate species of its own. More recent taxonomy suggests
that the "Gold Tegu" is merely a brilliant color-phase of the Black.
Black Tegus are much more aggressive than Black and White Tegus, therefore
the Gold Phase of the Black Tegu, as Goliath is, would naturally
    be an aggressive animal.
