Question... I need advice on how to get a telecommuting job. Do you know of any companies that hire outside workers? Answer...
The Telecommuter's Advisor: Real World Solutions for Remote Workers Telecommuting
Do long commutes, rumors of corporate downsizing, office politics, noisy cubicles, inadequate child-care options, and lack of a peaceful place to work get you down? Do you dream of working on your back deck instead of the back office? Have you always wanted to work from home, but couldn't figure out how? Then consider telecommuting. Every day in America, millions start their workday by walking down their hallway from bedroom to office and logging on to go to work. Total commute time: one minute. The typical teleworker in the U.S. is male, in his forties, and married, according to the International Telework Association, an organization that surveys this group annually. An estimated 17 million teleworkers work from home at least once a month. A much larger number (29 million in 1999) are "day-extenders," catching up on reading, e-mail and other tasks from home instead of staying longer at the office. Some 8 million are full-timers, and work remotely all the time. Of those workers who don't currently telework, 39% would like to. Though males outnumber females almost two to one, telework is a great work option for women. A flexible work schedule allows a working parent to participate in their children's school activities, provides freedom from stressful and long commutes, and creates a peaceful work environment far from the constant interruptions of the office. It also frees up time to spend with family or friends or community life, is a great help for parents of teens and invaluable for those who care for elderly parents at home.

Telecommuting proves beneficial and detrimental
By Mario Apicella and Steve Jefferson , InfoWorld Test Center
March 8, 2001
Remote workers can be a boon or a bust to your business productivity
But not all of the telecommuting picture is so rosy. Employees never physically leave work, they have plenty of rope to hang themselves with, and co-workers back at the office don't really care if the telecommuter can't hear them in meetings. Furthermore, the refrigerator is way too close, most HR benefits no longer apply, and people in different time zones will call you at 9 p.m.
Although the idea has been around for decades, the recent ubiquity of the Internet has made telecommuting a mere policy issue rather then a technical feat. In this sometimes-heated debate, we explore the pros and cons of cutting the tether.
Not appropriate for every job
Mario: An old Army truism comes to mind when I think of telecommuting: You should never send a soldier where you can send a bullet. To paraphrase, a company should not require a person to be on the premises if he or she can perform equally well working remotely. However true, this does not apply to every job. Many job-related activities can only be accomplished if the worker is on the premises.

Make telecommuting work for your business
SmallTech / Monte Enbysk
Telecommuting has gotten a bad rap lately. Some say that employees can't be serious about their careers if they'd rather work from home. Others insist that work groups fall apart if team members aren't physically in the office.
Still others contend that the novelty of telecommuting is simply wearing off. According to IBM research, fewer than 5% of all U.S. workers now telecommute on a full-time basis, a percentage that appears to be shrinking. But the bad rap may not hold: The U.S. Department of Labor reports that the number of workers who telecommute at least some of the time (the preferred term today is the less-U.S.-centric "telework") tops 19 million. While telecommuting is not for everyone, there is no question in my mind that in today's Internet Age, most workers expect to be able to do it at least part of each week or month. So, as a small-business owner who seeks to recruit and retain good employees, you'd do well to be flexible enough to allow telecommuting whenever possible. Even if you prefer your staffers not do it full-time, it should be an option for circumstances such as these:
  • An employee with a minor illness, such as a cold, would be better off working at home.

Time to shift attitudes about telecommuting
Marketing Intelligence / Joanna L. Krotz
Business owners have stubbornly resisted telecommuting. Let us recite the reasons why.
They don't like being unable to see an employee. If staffers are "home," then, by definition, they aren't "on the job." Human resources directors have nightmares about ceding special privileges to a couple of employees. What if everyone wants to work from home? Last but not least, there have been many high-profile failures, usually because companies do not set benchmarks or procedures for getting it right. Worries about security, long lines and hassles at the airport, and the rising costs of business travel, have caused many companies to rethink their policies. How about your company? Telework ROI Various studies show that telework programs can boost performance 10% to 15%. They can also cut expenses, sometimes as much as 40%, on fixed costs such as office space, furniture and fixtures, as well as on parking facilities, utility bills, copy machines and printers.
