The McClung Museum is a general museum with collections in anthropology, archaeology, decorative arts, local history, and natural history. The exhibits document ways of life, cultural trends, and technologies from prehistoric times to the present day, and showcase much of Tennessee's past its geology, history, art, and culture. The McClung Museum is a special place a place of discovery, a place to learn about the world around us. As a part of the University of Tennessee, the Museum supports and participates in the University's mission to serve the state, region, and nation through scholarship, teaching, artistic creation, professional practice, and public service. The professionalism and high caliber of the Museum are reflected in its accreditation by the American Association of Museums. In fact, the McClung Museum is one of only 12 museums in Tennessee to be so recognized. I invite you to visit the Museum and to enjoy the many experiences we offer. As Lewis, a 4th grader, wrote to us: "It is the best museum in the world."

Kindergarten Pre-registration Set
State law requires that children be 5 years old by Sept. 30 to enter kindergarten.
For specific dates and times, click here.

To find out what school your child is zoned for, parents can call the Transportation Department, at 893-5812.
It is important that parents register their children for kindergarten during pre-registration if possible because if the schools know in advance how many children to expect for kindergarten, then they can be well prepared on the first day of school. This ensures a good start to school for students, parents and teachers.
Parents need to gather several important documents for registration:
Birth certificate, Social Security card and proof of residence are required for pre-registration in the spring. All other documents must be presented at the school by the first day of school.

Alternative Routes to Quantitative Literacy for the Life Sciences - a project supported by the National Science Foundation through Award DUE-9752339 to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville for August 1, 1998 - July 31, 2000
Principal Investigator: Louis J. Gross. Co-Principal Investigators: Beth C. Mullin and Susan E. Riechert
Collaborators: Otto J. Schwarz, Monica Beals, Susan Harrell
The objective of this project is to start the process of enhancing the quantitative components of many undergraduate life science courses by focusing on the general biology sequence taken by science students. The project efforts will illustrate to students the importance of a diversity of quantitative tools to analyze life science problems, emphasize the utility of quantitative methods across the spectrum of life sciences, serve to reduce the perception by students that math is only needed for math courses, and enhance students appreciation for the importance of theory in the scientific process. The objectives will be met through development of appropriate quantitative examples, based upon data and illustrating key biological concepts, for entry-level biology courses. Dissemination of results will proceed through publication of a Primer of Quantitative Biology and a variety of web-based products.

Tennessee's public education system has historically lagged behind that of the rest of the nation. For the state's first two hundred years, Tennessee's economy was primarily based on agriculture and an education was not necessary to succeed in that environment. Once a public school system was established in the mid 1830's, it quickly failed due to corrupt leadership, which created a mistrust that continued for generations and delayed future growth and interest in public education. In addition, the influence of the evangelical movement in rural areas of the state deterred education progress because many followers of these religions felt that secular education hindered faith. It was not until the late 1890's that public education rose to the political forefront. Desegregation, lawsuits, and state and federally mandated education reforms have kept education in and out of the limelight ever since.
The first state constitution of 1796 had no mention of public education, and it wasn't until 20 years later that the state began to take measures to create a public school system. In contrast, Massachusetts opened the first publicly funded secondary school in the nation in 1635 and had a flourishing public school system by 1837.

About the Department Vision Our vision is to be recognized in Tennessee and beyond for innovation and leadership in industrial engineering education, research, and service. Mission The primary mission of the IME department is to develop benchmark quality industrial engineers with broad-based expertise in the design, development, and management of integrated production and service systems. A secondary mission is to develop and transfer innovative technologies for modeling and solving the problems of such integrated systems. Goals and Objectives To meet the program mission, educational objectives have been established for the BSIE program in accordance with ABET engineering accreditation criteria and the inputs of industry, alumni, faculty, and student constituencies. The first ojective is to meet or exceed ABET-required engineering program outcomes. Thus, the industrial engineering program is designed to provide a strong, broad-based engineering foundation such that graduates have the technical competence and broad education to develop effective and ethical engineering solutions to contemporary, societal problems. The program also ensures that graduates can communicate effectively, function positively in teams and engage in life-long learning.
In addition to meeting ABET program outcomes, the BSIE program has four distinct objectives on which the curriculum is founded. These objectives ensure that industrial engineering graduates are able to:

    WHAT EMPLOYERS WANT
These criticisms of today's youth are especially significant as they reflect absence of the very skills employers want and expect schools to provide in their students. They also give substance to employers' attraction to applicants who have work experience, who have demonstrated through their employment history that they have good job performance skills, verbal and math skills, and interpersonal skills. In the currently tight labor market, these practices are resulting in a declining number of good jobs for first-time workers. Zemsky (1994) notes the "chilling effect that the current absence of labor demand" had on the focus group discussions of large and small employers in the National Center on the Educational Quality of the Workforce study. "Among the participants from large firms, particularly in the older cities experiencing the greatest downsizing of large-scale manufacturing enterprises, there was a note of gallows humorfirms that had not hired since 1990; enterprises that had halved their work forces in the last five years; established companies on the verge of bankruptcy" (p. 4). Employers in the focus groups indicated their focus is on retraining their remaining employees or in recruiting skilled and otherwise qualified workers who were laid off because of other organizations' downsizing efforts.

    February 2, 2001 Abstract

This proposal requests support for assessment and modification of the biological sciences general education course. It is envisioned that both the content and delivery will be substantially changed in an effort to provide a more in-depth study and discussion of current issues in biology and achieve a higher level of student performance in the following areas: written and oral communications, critical thinking, mathematical reasoning, and service learning. In addition, we would like to increase student awareness of current biological research and its societal, moral, and ethical implications. The proposals for how we wish to accomplish these goals include offering thematic course options; requiring research, service learning, and presentation of results in a common forum; creating new and engaging laboratory and field experiences; and expanded use of information technology. Statement of Purpose and Significance with Respect to General Education
It is difficult to dispute the increasing impact of science and technology on our society. In addition, the majority of Americans are said to be scientifically illiterate. Therefore, our ultimate goal is for the student to become a more informed consumer, patient, and environmentally-aware citizen through the practice of researching, debating, and critically thinking about aspects of biology. We feel that this ultimate goal is entirely consistent with the goals of the General Education Program, including the exchange of knowledge through lecture, laboratory, and poster/presentation sessions; the recognition and acceptance of different ideas and points of view through bioethical debates and discussions; and the reflection on what this knowledge means individually and as a member of society through exercises such as service learning.
