People With Disabilities Work In Agriculture
For most of the over three million Americans earning their livings in agriculture, the work is not just their livelihood, it is their way of life; a productive and satisfying way of life of which they are very proud.
The Problem
Agricultural production is hazardous. The USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service estimates that more than 200,000 farmers, ranchers, and other agricultural workers experience lost-work-time injuries and occupational illnesses every year, approximately five percent of which have serious and permanent results. Off-the-farm injuries; health conditions, such as heart disease, arthritis, or cancer; and aging disable tens of thousands more. The Breaking New Ground Resource Center estimates that more than 500,000 persons working in agriculture have physical disabilities that interfere with their ability to perform essential tasks on the farm or ranch. Additionally, thousands of children born into agricultural families have disabilities, such as cerebral palsy, mental retardation, and epilepsy. Physical and attitudinal barriers often prevent these children from participating fully in farm and ranch operations, and from engaging in social and recreational activities enjoyed by other rural youth. The majority of people with disabilities who work or live in agricultural settings want to continue to do so despite their disabilities. All too often, however, they are frustrated in their attempts. Rural isolation, limited personal resources, gaps in rural service delivery systems, and inadequate access to agriculture-oriented assistance are among the obstacles they face.

Here is the staff of the Marketing Department: Randy Campbell Marketing In his fifth year in our organization, Randy has been part of our development from before we had a name or logo. He oversees all aspects of paid communications and events, including advertising, entertainment, promotions, special events, graphics and game presentations. Randy says that he is fortunate to work with some of the team's star players to create television and print advertisements and is proud to have worked with many of Nashville and Hollywood's most prominent entertainers in other promotional and special events for the team. Affectionately referred to by staff as "Ranger" for his ability to maneuver our thirty-two foot Land Yacht RV, Randy is an avid outdoors enthusiast and tries to spend as much time as possible with his family on their boat at Center Hill Lake. Randy attended high school at John L. McClellan in Little Rock, Arkansas and while pursuing a degree in management and marketing at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, met his wife of twelve years, Shari. They have two daughters, Sydney and Madison. They live in Hendersonville where they are members of Hendersonville First Baptist Church.

Proposals are no longer being accepted for professional development workshops. Workshops proposals are in the process of peer-review and the dispensation of those proposals will be sent via email to proposers on or about June 1, 2003. WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS: Professional Development Workshops at AEA's Annual Conference are hands-on, interactive sessions that provide an opportunity to learn new skills or hone existing ones. Presenters are both extremely knowledgeable in the subject area as well as experienced facilitators or teachers. T he 2003 workshops are currently being selected and descriptions, as well as registration, will be available by July 1, 2003. IMPORTANT BACKGROUND Professional development workshops precede and follow the conference. These workshops differ from sessions offered during the conference itself in at least three ways: 1) each is longer (either 3, 6, or 12 hours in length) and thus provides a more in-depth exploration of a skill or area of knowledge, 2) presenters are paid for their time and are expected to have significant experience both presenting and in the subject area, and 3) attendees pay separately for these workshops and are given the opportunity to evaluate the experience. FEES: Professional development workshops cost $300 for a two-day session (new this year), $150 for a full-day session and $75 for a half-day session for AEA members. For nonmembers, the fees are $400, $200 and $100 respectively and for students they are $160, $80 and $40.
