Potted History Some early history about women and the Olympics
    • Married women were barred from the Ancient Olympic Games but prostitutes or virgins were allowed to spectate. Kallipateria was the first female Olympic boxing coach in 440 BC. The first female Olympic champion was a Spartan princess called Kynisca, in 392 BC. She was also the first woman to become a champion horse trainer when her horses and chariot competed and won in the Ancient Olympic Games. Women had their own athletic games of Hera from about 1000 BC. Women were originally the prizes Ballooning, croquet and golf (1900) were once Olympic events in which women competed. Please see Statistics for more information. two Olympic sports in 1900 - tennis and golf. Sports historians now accept that women were involved in the yachting. Old programmes of the Paris Exposition show that women also participated in ballooning, croquet, equestrianism, golf, tennis and yachting. Bearing this in mind, we take the view that all women who took part in these sports were Olympians.

Have you watched the Olympics on TV or better yet been there to experience it live? Did you ever wondered why the Olympics started? I did! If you want to be on or go to the Olympics, I think you first need to know about it. Why did the games start? At the original Olympics what games did they play? Also what games do they play today? Now, get ready for the world of the Olympics.
Have you ever wondered how the Olympics started? In Olympia, Greece the Olympic Games were held every four years. First Olympic game was recorded in 776 BC; that was about 3,000 years ago. At that time this great festival took place to honor the Greek gods. Olympics were held during the great festival. My resources say Olympics were held to please the various gods. One God, in particular, the most important was called Zeus. The Olympics were called Olympiad in Greece.
Now we know where the games are held, but we dont know what games they played? In the first thirteen Olympic games, there was only one event and that was the sprint. The sprint event was about one hundred and eight meters in length. Then later Pentathlon was added and it had different events. There was discus, javelin, jumping, running, and wrestling. After a while, they added Equestrian events and that included chariot racing and riding. The Ancient Olympics did have lots of events. They had two major events Equestrian and Pentathlon events.

When two opponents play tennis with one person per side, the game is known as "singles." When athletes play the game in pairs, two per side, the game is called "doubles." Men and women compete separately in both singles and doubles competitions.

    Scoring
In a tennis game, scores increase according to a sequence of four points: 15, 30, 40, and "game." A score of zero points is known as "love." A player wins a game when he or she scores four points, unless the score is tied at 40. Any time the score is tied, from 40-40 on, the game is considered at "deuce." In a tie, or deuce, situation the player who scores the next point gains the advantage, or "ad." If the server has the advantage, it is referred to as "ad in;" if the receiver has the advantage, it is called "ad out." To win a game, the player with the advantage has to score the next point, otherwise the score returns to deuce and play continues until one player moves ahead by a margin of two points.
