History of Table Tennis
For history of table tennis in a particular country, see the Country In Focus page. Table Tennis likely began as a social hobby in England toward the end of the 1800's. Dining-room tables and balls of cork made up some of the early equipment that was used. These early pioneers may have referred to their sport as gossima flim-flam , or ping-pong . Around the turn of the century, the game underwent a few changes in England. One person introduced a celluloid ball to the game, while another added pimpled rubber to the wooden paddle. The recreational game lost some of its popularity until various groups around Europe revived it as "table tennis" in the 1920s. The International Table Tennis Association (ITTF) was formed in 1926. The sport soon spread to Japan and other Asian nations. The Japanese dominated the sport for much of the 50s and 60s, however the Chinese soon closed the gap. China alone dominated the sport for much of the 60's and 70's, but after Table Tennis became an Olympic event in the 1980's, other nations such as Sweden and South Korea have joined the top ranks.

Building the Olympic Dream in Sydney By Lisa Smtih Citius, altius, fortius
Swifter, higher, stronger
T he Olympic Games serve our age as a metaphor for challenge and success. For Australia, this year’s Olympic Games demonstrate the nation’s success as measured on several levels. One of only three nations to compete in all 25 modern Olympic Games, Australia now is host to this event on the cusp of a new millennium, winning the honor against fierce international competition. When Sydney won its bid to host the 2000 Olympic Games in 1993, a high-stakes match of competitive bidding among architects, engineers, and contractors worldwide was set into motion, every bit as dramatic as the sporting events that would happen seven years later. More than 30 sporting venues were required for competition in September, but the venues were only a fraction of the total infrastructure needed for the Olympics. Behind the scenes, an enormous network of engineering, design and planning unfolded. Gold Medal Contender One company in particular proved itself a top competitor during Sydney’s Olympic design and construction period. The respected architectural firm Bligh Voller Nield (BVN) has compiled a wide range of world-class projects throughout Australia and the Pacific Rim. The firm began when three prominent Australian firms merged: Bligh Voller Architects, Lawrence Nield and Partners Australia and Grose Bradley. The result is a powerful collaboration of design talent.

History of table tennis
The origin of table tennis has never been exactly pinpointed, even though it's a relatively young sport, younger than lawn tennis and not much older than basketball. The earliest known form of the sport, called indoor tennis, was played in the early 1880s by British army officers in India and South Africa, using lids from cigar boxes as paddles and rounded corks from wine bottles as balls, with a row of books set up across the middle of a table to form the net. Other versions developed in England during the 1890s, known variously as "whiff whaff" and "gossima," and Parker Brothers began manufacturing an indoor tennis kit that included a portable net that could be set up on a table, a small ball covered with netting, and miniature paddles. James Gibb, an Englishman who visited the United States in 1900, brought some hollow celluloid balls home and began playing indoor tennis with friends, using the new balls. Gibb apparently came up with the name "ping pong," representing the sounds of the ball hitting the paddle and then the table.

Gibb apparently came up with the name "ping pong," representing the sounds of the ball hitting the paddle and then the table. However, an English manufacturer of sporting goods, John Jacques, registered "Ping Pong" as a trade name in 1901 and sold American rights to Parker Brothers, who came out with a new kit under that name.

As you watch Wimbledon with your bowl of strawberries and cream, you might think that tennis is the most British of sports. But you'd be wrong - it dates back hundreds of years to another part of the world altogether. So settle back and let GYKO guide you through the edited highlights of the story of tennis...
  • Tennis has its origins in a much older game, Jeu de Palme (handball), which dates back to pre-12th century France. The game was played in an enclosed court, with side and end walls, and originally players used their hands, then gloves and finally a short racket.
  • This early game became very popular, particularly among French and English Royalty in the 16th and 17th centuries. Known as Real or Royal Tennis in Britain, the oldest court (which is still used occasionally) was built by King Henry VIII at Hampton Court Palace around 1530.
  • No one's sure why tennis was given its name. Some suggest it originates from Tennois or Sennois in France, where the game may have first been played. It might also date back from the French custom of shouting out 'tenez' ('play') before serving.

KOURNIKOVA AND FEDOROV GET SECRETELY MARRIED IN MOSCOW
A renowned tennis player Anna Kournikova and a no less renowned hockey player Sergei Fedorov have officially married in one of Moscow’s registration offices, according to The Sun magazine. The couple have reportedly “fled” to Russia and got their conjugal ties formally registered in Russia’s capital city. According to Mr. Fedorov’s mother, “it was a moving ceremony,” where only the brides’ and bridegrooms’ parents, bridesmen, and Sergei’s brother were present. To avoid unwanted witnesses, Ms. Kournikova and Mr. Fedorova are said to have paid for the registration office’ entire working day.
You may remember that Ms. Kournikova and Mr. Fedorov engaged in 1999 in Wimbledon. According to one of Mr. Fedorov’s friend who asked not to be identified, “ Anna did not want to formally marry as a “teenager,” and they decided to wait until she turned 20.”
