"The chemical and biological weapons that Saddam Hussein is known to have produced are the very instruments that terrorists are seeking in order to inflict devastating harm on the people of this country, in Europe, and in the Middle East," Cheney told the American Society of News Editors in New Orleans, Louisiana.

... Lots More Information! When the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941, the United States government knew exactly who was responsible for the offensive and had a clear understanding of their intentions. Japan launched the strike as a deliberate act of war. Like Pearl Harbor, the September 11 surprise attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon has had a devastating effect on Americans and their allies all around the world. But unlike Pearl Harbor, officials don't know for sure who is responsible. The United States feels like it is at war, but its citizens don't know who they're fighting against. A lot of the evidence that has come out points to Osama bin Laden as the mastermind behind these acts of terrorism. But there are a number of other terrorist groups who might mount such a strike. Devastating acts, such as the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, have left many concerned about the possibility of future incidents in the United States and their potential impact. They have raised uncertainty about what might happen next, increasing stress levels. Nevertheless, there are things you can do to prepare for the unexpected and reduce the stress that you may feel now and later should another emergency arise. Taking preparatory action can reassure you and your children that you can exert a measure of control even in the face of such events.
What You Can Do to Prepare
Finding out what can happen is the first step. Once you have determined the events possible and their potential in your community, it is important that you discuss them with your family or household. Develop a disaster plan together. 1. Create an emergency communications plan.

A UK site with information, background resources and discussion on the current worrying situation from a UK point of view.
http://www.waronterrorism.co.uk
This British website is dedicated to two things: - support for innocent victims wherever they may be and - a searching for the truth. Please contribute to the discussions and help bring this site to life. For a start do you believe that a "war on terrorism" makes any sense in an international context? Welcome to the slightly updated WarOnTerrorism.co.uk (not war on terror as it is sometimes known!) I will post a few thoughts every couple of days and ask you to post your comments on the discussion board . This site is intended to reflect UK opinion but others are more than welcome to contribute to the site - please state which country you come from 23 March 2003 So the invasion has started. And why? Well the only logical belief is a sudden virulent case of compassion has infected British and American politicians to which the French, Germans, Russians, Chinese, Dutch, Mexicans, South Africans and Turkish all seem to be immune. That is the only rational explanation for what is going on. It can't be your usual naked self interest can it? Well it could be, but it is certainly a new type of self interest. There has surely never been a war like this.

Om terrorism
Leo Trotskij (November 1911)
This article originally appeared in the November 1911 issue of Der Kampf , the theoretical monthly of the Austrian Social Democracy, withy the title On Terrorism . Trotsky wrote it at the request of Friedrich Adler, the editor of Der Kampf , as a response to the terrorist moods that were spreading among elements of the Austrian working class. Ur Marxism och Terrorism Thanks to from whose homepage this text has been copied July 2000 with kind permission.

The attack took place on American soil, but it was an attack on the heart and soul of the civilized world. And the world has come together to fight a new and different war, the first, and we hope the only one, of the 21st century. A war against all those who seek to export terror, and a war against those governments that support or shelter them. We're mounting a sustained campaign to drive the terrorists out of their hidden caves and to bring them to justice....At the same time, we are showing the compassion of America by delivering food and medicine to the Afghan people who are, themselves, the victims of a repressive regime. We're angry at the evil that was done to us, yet patient and just in our response....Our war on terrorism has nothing to do with differences in faith. It has everything to do with people of all faiths coming together to condemn hate and evil and murder and prejudice.

The International Policy Institute for Counter-Terrorism
A comprehensive resource on international terrorism and counter-terrorism
The International Policy Institute for Counter-Terrorism (ICT) was founded in 1996 at the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya, Israel. It is unique among academic institutions in focusing solely on the strategic aspects of terrorism and counter-terrorism. Terrorism is a weapon directed specifically at a civilian population - a population whose fears and anxieties have a significant impact on the political, economic, and social decisions of its government. Therefore, a major element in the fight against terrorism must be the education of the population in order to prevent its being easily manipulated by terrorists. ICT is engaged in research and analysis of terror in all its aspects. The Institute integrates academic knowledge of terrorism - it's aims and motivations - with the practical experience of experts in the fields of counter-terrorism. The emphasis is on providing practical recommendations for decision-makers and improving the ability of the population to cope with the psychological damage of terrorism. Index of Articles from the ICT database The ICT site is a comprehensive resource on International Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism, featuring an extensive database on terrorist organizations and attacks, an interactive forum, news updates, and articles on the motivations and methods of international terrorism.

The destruction of New York City's World Trade Center and the attack on the Pentagon in Washington raise innumerable questions that can be dealt with in the classroom. Although the most recent terrorist attacks have the greatest impact on America, they are part of a long and tragic history of terrorism that has been developing around the globe for decades. Constitutional Rights Foundation has prepared "America Responds to Terrorism," " War in Iraq ," and " Reflecting on September 11 ," a series of online lessons and resources designed for classroom use. Our approach is to be free from hyperbole and hype, and focused on presenting the tools and information that is sought by professionals and academics. Unaffiliated with any government or NGO, we attempt to provide a balanced resource. The only objective is to provide an environment that stimulates a spirited, thoughtful, and balanced context to examine terrorism. Not to point out the virtues or failings of any individual or group.
