Mathematics-Grade three

In this cybertour you will be exploring activities relating to the history of geometry and other activities relating to geometry.
OBJECTIVES AND OUTCOMES
objectives for this cybertour on Geometry:
  • To realize that Geometry is important To see how mathematicians developed ideas for Geometry To be able to recognize different shapes To be able to use a geometric theorem To see that we use Geometry in real life situations
  • POLYGONS
Answer the joke on the web page, then click on activities, there you will find a few additional links. Then click on polygons to start the lesson.
click here for lesson on polygons

A polygon is a closed plane figure made up of line segments. We see polygons everywhere. On streets, in your classroom and even at home.
  • Draw three different polygons. In your own words, what is a polygon? Tell me the name of some polygons we use everyday? Which of these shapes are polygons? Which of these shapes are not polygons?
  • PYTHAGORAS
Look at this page to give you a general idea about Pythagoras. Also be sure to click on Pythagoras to learn more about him. Read carefully so that you can answer the questions!

There are also Test Previews included on the website. These previews consist of review questions of the different activities supplied on the page. There are also a couple of downloadable geometric games on the website, as well. Some of the activities on the web page deal with tessellations, symmetry, and polygons. I think this is a really good website. It offers different ideas for presenting various topics in geometry.

TESSALATIONS IN INTERIOR DESIGN Introduction A tessalation is a tiling pattern made of polygons. The tiling pattern can be extended so that the tiles cover the plane completely with no gaps. A tessalation is the result of covering a plane surface with a repeated pattern of figures without any spaces between the figures. Ceramic tile, linoleum, and wood flooring are examples of interior designers favorite choices for homes. Many styles, patterns, and colors are available. A herringbone pattern, for example, is made up of parallelograms, a checkerboard pattern is made up of squares, and a honeycomb pattern is made up of hexagons. Task You are an interior designer. You have been hired to create a flooring design that is to be used in a custom home. You will create this design using tessalations. Process I Research tessalations using the following links: Porcelainia Tessalations Tessalations when tessalations are made Process II Design your custom flooring pattern by using a specific polygon or polygons. Create a pattern using your polygon(s) of choice.

    Summarized by Pat Champion
One of the first day activities for our Geometry and the Internet Workshop was to note some of our favorite resources as teachers. Throughout the week we will be sharing our ideas. Watch for them. The comments on our favorite resources follow: As a young and promising geometry teacher my resources range from magazines to veteran teachers. I mostly utilize math surveys at the beginning of the year with 10 classes in the math department to get ideas for projects, group activities, field trips, and math week activities. I currently have been using the Key Curriculum Press Textbook with my Geometry Advance students. It is a wonderful book. See everyone supper time.
Lenisera Barnesforum1@drew.berry.edu I'm hoping my favorite resource will be the new book we just adopted. It's the UCSMP Geometry. Anybody out there familiar with it?

I have been teaching Geometry at Houston County High School in Warner Robins, Georgia for 3 years. I have also taught a lot of PreAlgebra and a sprinkling of Algebra II, CP and honors level.

    http://www.c2t2.ca/aaap/math6.htm
    6. Geometry
Geometry is traditionally presented later in the Intermediate course after algebra. However, some adult learners would benefit from an introduction to math using a spatial orientation.
    Provincially Articulated Learning Outcomes
It is expected that learners will be able to:
    a. name and draw points, lines, rays, segments, and angles
    b. name and draw triangles, quadrilaterals, other common polygons and circles
    c. construct with a compass and straight edge: i) the perpendicular bisector of a line segment
ii) the bisector of an angle
    a copy of an angle
    iii) parallel lines
    d. classify and distinguish among acute, right, obtuse, straight, reflex, complementary and supplementary and vertically opposite angles
    e. describe the angle relationships created when parallel lines are cut by a transversal f. measure angles with a protractor g. classify triangles according to sides and angles h. identify similar and congruent figures Suggested Instructional Strategies
    • Have learners in groups brainstorm real-life applications of geometry:
      • parallel lines (e.g., railway tracks, mitre box, construction industry, sewing)
