Literate Programming in Forth

Abstract
We look at Donald Knuth's concept of " Literate Programming ," investigating exactly what it is and how it is used to assist conventional programmers. We then ask what lessons we can learn from this idea and if it is possible to apply them to Forth. If so, then what is required and what advantages to we gain by doing so. Finally some examples of Forth coding techniques are given allowing us to compare the more traditional techniques with Knuth's system.
1. What is Literate Programming
Literate programming was created by Donald Knuth during the development of his TeX typesetting system. It is the combination of documentation and source together in a fashion suited for reading by human beings. In general, literate programs combine source and documentation in a single file, referred to as a WEB. Literate programming tools then parse the file to produce either readable documentation or compilable source. All the original work revolves around a particular literate programming tool called WEB. Knuth [

TeX
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. TeX (officially written T E X, and pronounced "tekh") is a powerful typesetting system written by Donald Knuth , popular in academia, especially in the mathematics physics and computer science communities. It has largely displaced Unix troff , the other favored formatter, in many Unix installations. TeX is generally considered to be the best way to typeset complex mathematical formulas, but, especially in the form of LaTeX and other template packages, is now also being used for many other typesetting tasks. It can be used to compose mathematical expressions on Wikipedia pages: see Wikipedia:TeX markup
History
Knuth began TeX because he had become annoyed at the declining quality of the typesetting in volumes I-III of his monumental The Art of Computer Programming . In a manifestation of the typical hackish urge to solve the problem at hand once and for all, he began to design his own typesetting language. He thought he would finish it on his sabbatical in

Literate programming
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Literate programming is a certain way of writing computer programs which combines documentation and source code into one file. The compilable source code and the formatted documentation can be extracted from this file with specific utilities. The main idea is to regard programs as communications to human beings, as works of literature, hence the name "literate programming". The documentation is organized as a cross-linked web of documented and numbered code sections whose order may differ from the one in the compilable program. The first published literate programming environment was WEB , introduced by Donald Knuth in 1981 for his TeX typesetting system; it uses

Literate Programming
Review by Andrew Schulman
In much the same way that General Francisco Franco is still dead, volume 4 ( Combinatorial Algorithms ) of Donald Knuth's projected seven-volume Art of Computer Programming is still not out. Neither are volumes 5 ( Syntactical Algorithms Theory of Languages ), or 7 ( Compilers
DDJ readers are probably familiar with the reason why: Knuth has been on a ten-year detour from the Art of Computer Programming , working in the field of computer typesetting (TeX) and typography (METAFONT). In addition to producing the TeX and METAFONT software itself, Knuth has used this software to produce an attractive five-volume series, Computers and Typesetting , that includes not only the documentation for TeX and METAFONT, but also their source code.
What DDJ readers may not be familiar with is that this source code is written in a programming language called WEB. But when I say "written," I really do mean written: the source code, and the written description of it, are one and the same. WEB is a language, quite similar to Pascal (there's also CWEB, which is quite similar to C), which makes it possible to merge the executable source for a system with its description. More importantly, it allows you to construct and present the source in an order which makes "psychological" sense. Using such a system, software "authors" really do become authors, concerned with writing and presenting code in a way that makes sense, not so much to the compiler, but to the reader.

T E X quick reference card
To quote the TeX Frequently Asked Questions TeX is a typesetting system written by Donald E. Knuth, who says in the Preface to his book on TeX (see TeX-related books) that it is ``intended for the creation of beautiful books-and especially for books that contain a lot of mathematics''. Knuth developed a system of `literate programming' to write TeX, and he provides the literate (WEB) source of TeX free of charge, together with tools for processing the web source into something that can be compiled and something that can be printed; there's never any mystery about what TeX does. Furthermore, the WEB system provides mechanisms to port TeX to new operating systems and computers; in order that one may have some confidence in the ports, Knuth supplied a test by means of which one may judge the fidelity of a TeX system. TeX and its documents are therefore highly portable. TeX is a macro processor, and offers its users a powerful programming capability. For this reason, TeX on its own is a pretty difficult beast to deal with, so Knuth provided a package of macros for use with TeX called plain TeX; plain TeX is effectively the minimum set of macros one can usefully employ with TeX, together with some demonstration versions of higher-level commands (the latter are better regarded as models than used as-is). When people say they're ``programming in TeX'', they usually mean they're programming in plain TeX. The T E X quick reference was created by Joseph H. Silverman
