ILLINOIS SCHOOLS GOING SOLAR PROGRAM Partners: Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs and the National Energy Education Project (NEED) The Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs has tapped the resources and expertise of the National Energy Education Project’s (NEED) for the Schools Going Solar Program for the Chicago Public Schools. NEED’s energy education program is a multi-sided, comprehensive approach to energy education. NEED’s solar schools program creates learning laboratories within schools fortunate to be receiving PV systems for their buildings. To date, 6 schools have received installations, with an additional 10-25 planned for 2002 and 2003. All participating schools receive NEED materials, which illustrate hands-on education at its best. The activities incorporate music, drama, language, arts and math skills, as well as scientific investigation to teach about energy. All NEED training programs and classroom activities are correlated to the National Science Education Standards and to the educational guidelines set by education agencies at the state and local levels. This program is funded through the State of Illinois monies with support from BP Solar, Spire Corporation, ComEd and Schott Applied Power.

Students and educators around the nation will join together in the third annual National Water Education Day to raise awareness about the importance of protecting water resources. Caddo Lake Institute, Inc. (CLI), is a non-profit academic program which encourages interdisciplinary environmental study based on the preservation of the ecological and cultural integrity of the Caddo Lake ecosystem. The Institute's Caddo Lake Scholars Program and Junior Scholars Program promote the idea that wise use of an ecosystem includes preserving it as a living laboratory for teaching and learning ecology. CLI is a private operating foundation founded by Don Henley, musician and environmentalist. The role of the Institute is to act as an "ecosystem-specific" sponsoring entity, underwriting local wetland science and conservation education, as well as cultural and ecological research and monitoring. CLI, in partnership with federal and state conservation agencies, created the 1993 initiative which resulted in the designation of approximately 8,000 acres (3,300 hectares) of Texas-owned land under the Ramsar Convention of Wetlands of International Importance and which was enlarged in 1996 to a total of 21,000 acres (8,500 hectares).

    TWA Educational Programs
The Texas Wildlife Association (TWA) was formed in 1985 by a group of ranchers, wildlife managers and hunters dedicated to the conservation, management, and enhancement of wildlife and wildlife habitat on private lands.
The Texas Wildlife Association separates itself from other conservation and hunting organizations by focusing it’s mission on private landowners and their ethical relationship to the land. Command-and-control environmentalism has largely run its course, and land trusts will never raise enough money to do the job alone.
The future well-being of wildlife, both game and rare species, depends upon private landowners’ commitment to habitat. Private landowners aren’t the “gaps” between “protected” lands; they are the real stewards of the lands in their care, and often have so proven for several generations. Motivated by what Aldo Leopold called a land ethic, enabled by sustainable markets and incentives, and nurtured by their association with the entire land and hunting communities…private landowners are achieving real conservation results, in some cases overcoming great political odds to do so.
We believe that Texas' system of wildlife management is the finest in the United States primarily because of the natural alliance between sportsmen and landowners. Supported by our thousands of members, we work hard to enhance this relationship.

    Texas Youth Hunting Program

The Texas Youth Hunting Program (TYHP) was founded in partnership with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in 1995 to consolidate youth hunting outreach and information in Texas in a safe, responsible, mentored and professional manner.
    Texas Big Game Awards

“Hunting Equals Habitat” is the motto of the Texas Big Game Awards, another TWA program co-sponsored by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Far from being just a “big buck” contest, the Texas Big Game Awards (TBGA) recognizes outstanding native white-tailed deer, mule deer and pronghorn antelope and the landowners who actively manage their land to encourage wildlife and habitat conservation. A new program added in 2001 are the Carter’s Country TBGA Wildlife Conservation College Scholarships, awarding $20,000 in college scholarships annually.
Wildlife Management Education, Field Days and Special Events Texas’ rapid urban growth presents unique communication challenges for the Texas Wildlife Association (TWA), which seeks to educate both private landowners and urban residents about the positive aspects of responsible, active habitat management and ethical hunting. To reach these diverse audiences, TWA creates opportunities for interaction and education at Wildlife Management Field Days, special events such as Wildlife Expo and conventions, training workshops for adult volunteer leaders and teachers, and symposia for landowners, land managers, and natural resource professionals.
